"war trophies" are a thing of the past, you capture a weapon the unit takes it and destroys it. We were in Iraq and someone found a bolt action rifle in a search of a house with a Reich (?) proof mark on it. They thought long and hard about how to smuggle it out, but in the end gave up.

You can still technically bring home stuff that would be antique-status in the USA (pre-1899-dated). Sometimes guys get locals to buff out later dates and re-mark them as pre-'99. However, since it's all at the commander's discretion anyway most of them just prohibit it entirely because ass-covering.

Gen de Chastelain said he had seen rifles, particularly AK-47s, machine guns, ground-to-air missiles, explosives, explosive material, mortars, flame throwers, hand guns, timer units and ballistic caps, a device that improves the flight path of a missile.

While the majority of the arms were heavy weaponry, the team had also decommissioned improvised weaponry.

Some of the weaponry was "very old", said the general. He had handled a Bren machine gun, a 1930s weapon that he had trained with at the start of his military career.

He said that it was likely that given the age of some of the weaponry, and the condition in which it was presented to his team, it was entirely possible that the IRA itself no longer knew exactly what arms it had been keeping.

Curator Ron McDowell said the Austrian-made Steyr rifles were part of the 25,000 cache smuggled into Larne from the German Empire by the UVF aboard the Clyde Valley as part of its gunrunning at the height of the Home Rule crisis.

"When one particular locker was opened, it was a bit of astonishment for us all when we found these old period pieces lying in a really damp and dingy place," Mr McDowell explained.

"The first thing that goes through your mind is: 'I'm going to jail and I'm never going to see my wife and kids again'."

Mr McDowell said the police were contacted immediately following the discovery of the guns in a little-used part of the building.

After being examined by experts the 10 rifles were returned as they do not require a firearms licence due to their age and the lack of ammunition available for them.

"They are an obsolete calibre, effectively a big stick," Mr McDowell said.

"Their make is a 1904 Steyr and they all have a little UVF stamp on them, which was used at the time to identify them.

coming from everywhere, mostly from old republicans who had buried gear in the twenties, thirties, and forties. They were in perfect working order. We couldn’t cope sometimes with the amount of gear coming in. It was unbelievable. There were sub-machineguns, old .303 rifles and ‘Peter the Painters’ [Mauser C96s] – a pistol on a sort of a handle to give you a better grip than an ordinary pistol would.

We, as Loyalists, didn’t have such impressive connections with the world of armaments [as the IRA]. Our first trawl of weapons looked like something from a WWI museum with bolt-action Steyr and Torino [Vetterli] rifles, shotguns, a few handguns and very little ammunition. The odd Lee-Enfield rifle or Sten sub-machinegun were a luxury

Ahem

a)I'm Roman Catholic but was a student of NI terror groups in a semi professional capacity
b)Both sides had martini henries either from the sport shooting craze in the 1890-1910 or stolen from baracks. They were used in the 1916 rising or example. The IRA during the war of independence carried everything from flintlocks (queen annes) to lee metfords, martinis, maouser 88s, lee enfields, sniders, gras

The loyalists had a similar mix martinis had been bough by one sponsor from harrods and of course the vendrettis and steyrs

All of the left overs was dug up by both sides in the first 5 years of the troubles.

A lot of it including UVF marked and republican items is washing up in auction rooms now.

Why are you writing it like that? Also, I'm pretty fucking sure it's not a No.1 Mk.IV. I think you mean a No.4 Mk.I, but it's more likely a No.4 Mk.2 I figure. They stopped using Roman Numerals for the Mark sometime shortly after WWII. As for the R1, I suppose that was the FN FAL variant issued to the South Africans? Any particular difference from the English/Aussie L1A1 or the Canadian C1? I think the C1 is the only FAL variant with a clip feed guide to allow for reloading with 5-rnd clips. Nice feature!

>>33610327
Let's be honest, in a day and age where most everyone has assault rifles or at least semi-auto rifles, if you have to be stuck with a bolt action, you won't find a better one than a No.4 Lee Enfield. Smooth as fuck action, 10-rnd capacity instead of typical 5-6, floating barrel, super fucking thick barrel to further help accuracy, can reload with 2 clips from empty within 5 seconds with practice (less than twice the time it takes to reload a Mauser or Mosin but you get twice as much ammo), long-radius aperture sights instead of short-radius tangent sights... No.4 is truly the God-tier of standard-issue Military bolt-actions, and no, rimmed ammo in box magazines was not and is not an issue. Yes, I know, Murphy's Law, but there's also Murphy's Law of getting a poorly loaded round or a squib followed by a fully loaded round in rapid-fire resulting in a kerboom, so to an extent yes Murphy's Law is good, but at some point it's practically laughable.

Damage control on your rimmed cartridge in box magazine claim, huh? Fair enough, you'll need more than that though. Feel free to continue to pin it on my drinking however. A 26 year old drinking in 2017 makes more sense than a 60+ year old family of rimmed bolt-action rifles used between 1888-1950s, doesn't it? Of course the fact it was used for several years even after the 1950s was out of pure desperate necessity by nations DESPERATE to replace it with ANYTHING possible. Especially the superior Mauser actions, yeah? Oh of course, those precious rimless cartridges that could have been adopted at ANY bloody point during those decades, but no, they just sluggishly kept on with those jam-o-matic rimmed cartridge bolt actions. No wonder the British, Aussies, and Canadians lost both world works, right? With the Germans using those super duper advanced rimless cartridges!

Though then again I'm sure you see past my sarcasm and would like to throw the Russians with their rimmed 7.62x54r cartridges in Mosin mags and SVT mags, yeah? Probably never handled an SVT in your damned life, and I dare say you've never handled a Lee rifle before either, whether Enfield or Metford! I'm even skeptical as to whether you handled a Mosin in your bloody gunpowder-neglected existence! No I can't give damned timestamp with a firearm; unfortunate life circumstances has brought me down to a noguns sadly enough, however I'll soon be legally rebuilting my collection once more, and getting thousands more rounds of trigger time. So stick that up your rectal autism pipe and shove it, you beautiful /k/ bastard. I love you anyways, you fuck!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but I don't understand why he has all his clips exposed and also with the bullets pointed up. I had two bandoliers EXACTLY like those before, but I kept my clips bullet-down and also kept the upper flap over them to keep them from being exposed. Makes for a bit slower reload because the little upper flap has to be moved out of the way, but at least while you're running about or whatever you won't have to worry about losing a clip or two.

Well (not saying I agree with it, I don't), part of the reason why we banned war trophies was for the same "hearts and minds" doctrine that we've been trying to push in Iraq and Afghanistan. It doesn't look so good to the people we're trying to curry favor with, when you have guys in a unit plundering the country for souvenirs and trophies.

Of course you could solve this problem by just offering to deduct something like $50-$100 from the paycheck of every soldier for every war trophy sent back home and use that money to buy food/water/medicine/whatever for the local populace, but that policy would make sense.

Huh, funny that. If the Nazis were to return today I imagine their slogan would be similar save for the bit about Allah (which I assume is used for 'God') and Islam. Death to America, Death to Israel, and Curse on the Jews? Yeah, sounds quite Naziesque.

>>33618373
I think it all comes down to personal preference, but I believe aperture sights are better than tangent sights provided the rear sight isn't a tiny little pinhole thing like you say. No.4 Lee Enfield's rear sight is gorgeously open, though gets a bit muddled if you use the ladder portion instead of the 100yd 'battle sight' or whatever.
>>
>>33618369
It's to serve as a kind of handguard extension, form what I've read. These guys are fighting in the desert, where the sun causes the metal to heat up. Touch off a couple rounds, and the barrel can give you a 2nd degree burn. For stuff like the action and bolt handle this isn't too big a deal (hence why they're not covered), but the barrel would be a lot more comfy with the rag.

Also thanks for the translation.

Anecdote of questionable reliability: I heard from some guy on /k/ that the Rooskies still have stockpiles of maxim guns lying around from WW1 and the Russian civil war chambered in 7.62x38R. It's not insane to assume that some of them ended up in Ukraine, though how is not very certain.
Less bullshit anecdote:
A friend of mine had a relative that got shot by a musket while in Afghanistan. His body armor stopped it, but if I imagine it must have hurt like a bitch.
>>
>>33626904
The Russians manufactured their Model 1910 Maxim until 1945; they had a lot to spare.
>>
>>33610505
Is that the receiver of a M1919 behind the dude on the left?

>Fucking muslims
>>
>>33626904
Anecdote 1; The Russian Maxims were chambered in 7.62x54R, not x38R.

Anecdote 2; If the musketball struck his SAPI plate, it would not have hurt at all, let alone even make a bruise.
>>
>>33626916
Yeah; there's a Browning M2 on his other side, and to the right of the dude with the Kar.98k and FAL there's an M1919A6.

They got like 5,000 of them from the Warsaw Pact as military aide. Same way the Syrians got all those Panzer IVs the Israelis shot up.

I'd be willing to bet a ME Garand started off in the hands of a US soldier in North Africa fighting Germans or Italians, which ended up getting captured by local looters. After that, it traded hands between dozens of militias and armies and warlords and merchants until it finally ended up in Afghanistan, 70 years later.

We gave a ton of Garands to Turkey and Iran in the 1950s; that's probably where they all came from. We also invaded Lebanon in 1958.

I'll go ahead and assume the boolets are facing up for the photo op, a bit more intimidating when you can see the nose of the bullets rather than just a solid block of metal, or he may be just be green and not know any better

Afghanistan is full of old smles from years of British colonial rule. It was actually the primary weapon of the mujahideen during the soviet occupation. A lot of nazi weapons show up,in Iraq including stg44s because hitler sent a large shipment of munitions to Iraq during world war 2 in an attempt to create a pro nazi uprising there against the British who controlled it at the time.

The guns were in his land, it's Ireland. Given reletively recent events, getting caught with what could initially be seen as a cache of weapons would indeed lead to sphincter tightening.

>>
>>33621221

Those are M12's ya dip.
>>
>>33630226
I think he's talking about the SMGs to the left by the fucked-up PPSh-41s, not the 'Thumper' grenade launchers from Vietnam which are over to the right if memory serves.
>>
>>33630255
Uhh what? He is also talking about the SMGs. A Beretta M12 or Model 12 is an SMG with the same basic layout as the Spectre.

Idk for sure if he's right that its a M12 but they're absolutely not Spectres - they don't have the square front.

A "Thumper" GL is an M79, so idk what you're talking about.
