So a gun store near me has a good condition S&W 645 for about $250. Pic related isn't the actual gun but is pretty much exactly what it looks like, down to the Pachmayr grips.

I'm not really in the market for one of these, but I like older, weirder guns and it seemed like a pretty sweet deal. I asked the dude behind the counter why it was so cheap, and he said it wasn't broken, but trigger linkages are a known issue with these guns. I did a little research online and it seemed like most people liked their 645s, so I'm not entirely sure what he's on about.

At any rate, should I buy it? Anyone have any experience with these? The price seems right but I don't want to buy another basket case gun I have to throw parts/labor at.

Here's my current handgun collection. I think something American made and in .45 would actually be a pretty good addition.
>>
if you do get it, don't call S&W, they are no longer honoring the lifetime service warranty on the number series guns, they are simply offering replacement.
>>
>>33602870
Nice.

So if it breaks I can send it in to S&W and get a new gun?
>>33602897
Thanks! Sorry for the potato picture.
>>
>>33602917

they'll offer you a discount on a new gun, unless they happen to have a stash of parts in the back, but everything i have read in the past little while says they are no longer servicing number series guns, jsut replacing them.
>>
>>33602849
I'd jump on that, personally
>>
>>33602849
Fuck yeah, man - get it!
I've been stalking Armslist and GunBroker for a long ass time looking for a 4506 or a 4516.

My top bid/price is around $410.00 for one (I want a bargain). $250.00 is a STEAL for what you have shown here.
>>
>>33603189
Still me. Please say that you don't want it, and that you are in central Virginia.

If it's in even ok shape and functional and you left the store without buying it, it probably won't be there when you get back at that price.

The older S&Ws are rapidly turning into collectables and prices are going up.
>>
>>33603264
Sadly no, I'm in MI.
>>33603330
Fuck. Well maybe I'll swing by tomorrow and see if it's still there. I wonder if they'll take $200 for it.
>>
>>33603330
This.
I would love to have a 5906. They have skyrocketed to $500+ for some reason.
>>
>>33602849
>should I buy a S&W number series semi-auto
Yes, yes you should.
>>
>>33603189
I've got a 4506 (no dash) that I'll let go for 500. Comes with 2 mags and a safariland paddle holster
>>
>>33603449
That's decent.
Sorry, though- I'm currently living in a fantasy land where I dream that I won't be outbid on GunBroker someday at $410.00 [like I catch people not paying close enough attention, or something.]

This, and the "accidental win" will obligate me to move the money and do the transaction, [like it's my "fortune" and not my choice], because my wife knows that I need another gun like I need a hole in the head. [I do want one, though- the "super bargain" at $410.00, and the "accidental win" angle is how I could get one and not have to answer to my wife and my common sense].

TL;DR: I'm a pansy-ass cuck bitch who won't pay more than $410.00 for a 3rd Gen S&W pistol, though I know that they are readily worth at least $600.00 nowadays. [They "don't make 'em like they used to!]

I posted the 39-2 here

$329 on gunbroker. Had a patch of rust I cleaned up and refinished myself. You can get good deals if you're patient but higher profile listings on gunbroker tend to attract retards that will bid well over what things are actually worth.

Where are you located?

>>33602849
Paid $620 for mine. Absolutely worth it.

>offering replacement

What exactly are they replacing it with? I have a like new 659 early series that can be technically sent in for a recall for the half-cock position (no actual safety issue, but historically there was a voluntary recall). Do they just send you a bag of dog shit back?

>>33602999
>off you a discount on a new gun
>buy broke-ass 3rd Gen .45
>trade it in for an M&P2.0 in .45
I like this plan.
>>
>>33605489
Sorry, I meant 2nd Gen. The 4-number ones are the 3rd Gens.

>>33603444
The S&W metal autos have always tickled my pickle since I was a kid growing up in the early 90s.
>>
>>33603411
Been all the stupid gun scares and the last big police trade in I know of being years ago $350 3rd gens aren't the ludicrous bargains they once were
