It isn't free of flaws. It's old, has 155k miles, a bad exhaust leak, and has been painted several times. You just gotta open up your search area. It was a state away.

If you have any automotive repair skills check out the Copart app.

It's mostly damaged vehicles, but quite a few have superficial damage and are easily fixed.
>>
>>33598389
It's gonna break down at 60k miles. You need to get something reliable like a Toyota. Do up an old 4runner with a slight lift and nice tires, or even a Nissan Xterra. Stay away from Chryslershit, Ford, and Chevy. Land Rover too for that matter, those have the worst reliability ratings in the US.

/o/tist here, yes we are pretty autistic but heres my opinion

Any jeep from the 90's and maybe even the early 00's are good. They have rock solid engines that will last you forever and they have very strong frames. The ONLY issue that you want to change immediately is the axles. Swap the axles for something stronger, the stock axles are fine for road and light offroad use but for a bug out vehicle you want them things to be changed. I have heard that they could potentially run in an EMP situation but I dont know much about that.
>>
>>33599123
That is a great choice, those cars are so underrated for stuff like this. They are comfy and reliable and have a super good engine if you wanna mod it.

There's a white Cherokee near me, $1100, it must have been totally fucked, the garage selling it has a bad reputation too. I just want one so much, it has the Jurassic Park aesthetic despite not being the exact car they used. That and they'd be perfect for all my gig gear

OD green looks great, enjoy it.
>>
Weird, I've been driving wranglers for about 6 years now and have never had one break down or fail on me. Yes I go off road, no I don't act like a retard off road and slam them around. I've owned TJ, JK, and now JKU.

Bug out vehicles should be more than just a vehicle. Jeeps, especially, as OP related are frequently enthusiast vehicles. They're easy to work on, and older ones are practically tractor equipment. E.g. Unbolt a U-joint, plug in a different driveshaft, drive a water pump / run farm equipment / recharge your home batteries.

If you've got a bug out vehicle, you probably also have other preparations like private land in the country and a route to get there.

Yeh. Gimme the flattie. They weigh nothing and won't break an axle. That Jankel ought to have Dana 60s at least. It'll weigh a fuckton, guzzle gas and still break if abused. A flattie will bounce over terrain, off trees, and the moving parts won't crack under the strain. Only drawback is the C-frame rather than fully boxed like YJ/TJ/JK.

>>
>>33602904

A CUCV is also acceptable, an M1009 with the right gearing can even be reasonably fuel efficient.
>>
>>33601788
Newer stuff is better, though the 4.0 V6 in the Early JKs and WKs are shit. Or you have something older, in which case it's more lucky that reliable, anyway.
>>
>>33602984
I've owned a 2003 TJ and a 2014 JK, and just traded the JK in for a 2017 JKU because I wanted more room. Haven't had any problems with any of them.
>>
>>33603049
The later TJ 4.0s were actually not as bad as the <2003, so I'm not surprised. The 3.6 is a genuinely good engine, too.

Let's be honest, though, almost no one on here is buying a JK.
>>
>>33601967
I wish a US maker would make a modern small/medium truck like the rangers used to be.

My dad had a late 80s ranger and that thing was the perfect size.
>>
>>33603067
We'll I guess I was basing my responses off of the OP's pic. Yeah if they are talking about older non wrangler jeeps...eh it's a crapshoot. I think JKs get a bad rap for no reason though. They are very capable off road.
>>
>>33603094
Ranger is coming back, though it's not exactly as small as the old Ranger.
>>33603150
JKs are definitely the most capable Wranglers to date. Jeep has never made more capable vehicles than they do, today, I don't care what anyone says.

OP if you are going to buy a jeep, buy one with a 4.0L strsight 6. (Nothing after 2006)

I work for jeep, the new ones are hilarious when they come in and they are "shtf vehicles". Poor bastards spending tens of thousands of dollars on a meme that i could stop with a fucking 1oz slug with ease.
>>
>>33604026
He's not wrong though. There is not body on frame construction and it's weaker because it's built like a car with a subframe/unibody construction in place of body on frame construction

It's why the XJ flexs so much when you wheel it. It's the single biggest reason I didn't buy even though they offroad pretty well. I was once wheeling with someone in an XJ and he flexed the body so much he couldn't open the door until he finished the obstacle
>>
>>33599123
Only problem with these are the transmissions. Solenoid packs shit out on all of them, its inevitable.
>>
>>33603972
This reminds me of a jeep I bought. Went to look at a jeep for sale guy said he broke the drive shaft and thought the rear differential was messed up. Had it towed to his house. It was only 3 years old. I haggled with him over price and got him way down from what he was asking which was already low. Paid him and he asked when I was sending a tow truck to pick it up. I hopped in started it and stuck it in 4x4 and drove away. The look on his face was pure hatred. Guess it never crossed his mind that even with the rear driveshaft busted the front would still work
>>
>>33604030
Bending is easy. It's your prep and welding that make all the difference. Bad welds and a rollover can get you killed.

Anyways, in for Toyotas because obvious reasons. I think everyone here knows why by now. There's also the Frontier which I've been able to find a few under $5k on my local CL, but I rarely see any of those around here, whereas Toyotas go for minimum $8k...

Check it out for yourself. They are old Chevys. C-channel frame, underpowered, overgeared. Workable if you can find a camper shell to throw on it. Probably the best thing about them is their simplicity and being pre-OBD II. If you want a project vehicle, you could probably do better. If you aren't totally strapped for cash or don't want to do a bunch of work yourself, opt for something newer and a shell.

ITT: Everyone acting like you ABSOLUTELY 100% HAVE TO HAVE A SPECIALTY ROCK CRAWLER VEHICLE THAT SIMULTANEOUSLY FITS DOWN NONEXISTENT 3' WIDE TRAILS to bug out anywhere on the planet.

No nigger.

Here's what you need in a bugout vehicle:
>the ability to haul both people and supplies at once
Which means fullsize pickup or large, truck-frame SUV. Or do you really think you can get 2-4 adults plus enough food/water/clothing/weaponry for them in a small SUV? Especially when almost nobody has "good" survival gear and is relying on heavy/bulky surplus gear?
>reliability
Because your early-mid-90's shitbox with 300k miles on it 100% guaranteed won't break down in the middle of nowhere (either in or out of SHTF) and if it does you're 100% guaranteed to be able to fix it with tools on-hand, right? lolno.
>power (torque)
Don't need a ton, do need more than those tiny little I4's and V6's can produce. Oh wait, that's right, your plan for all obstacles is "drive over it" and the mere concept of trailers is foreign to you. And inb4 "b-but I'll just throw it in low gear!" Have fun getting nowhere slowly at 5mph while tanking your fuel economy since you're close to redlined the whole way.

Garbage cars from the 90s don't need backup cameras because you can actually see out of them. Touchscreens are garbage, give me a control I can operate without having to take my eyes off the road. Auto-dim rear view is nice I guess. Never really needed it.

This anon right here has no idea what he is talking about.

>muh full size
I'm not taking anyone but myself and my supplies. Other people are liabilities. I will not feed/protect them when SHTF.

>shitbox, 300k miles, tools on hand omg
Engine is a brand new GM crate 350. Edelbrock RPM intake, Demon carb, MSD ignition, steel fan, RAM clutch. The manual trans and gear-driven tcase were made for vehicles 2-3x as heavy. It is almost completely mechanical. The original electronics are all for lights/horn/signaling. I actually do have the tools, they are in the bed. And spare fuel pump, hoses, fittings, plugs, fluids, etc.

>mudding rofl, bottom gears kek
Drive around obstacles, stupid. If that's impossible, winch or slowly drive over it. What the hell kind of bug out are you going to, anyway? Up a mountain?

>fuel economy
Bug out location has a legal ethanol still for producing fuel from biomass. Carb/ignition settings are easy to switch from E10 to E85.

At least know something about the subject when talking shit next time young fella.
>>
>>33627543
I've got almost an identical Jeep. What engine and tranny do you have?
>>
>>33627772
L31, Vortec heads. Trans is an old 10-spline SM465 mated to NP205, both out of a 78 (or 73?) K30 dually.

Every douchebag I've ever met was a Subaru driver. It's uncanny. You're not going on a safari nigger you drive on concrete what the fuck. Eat a dick. They had the ricer looking ones too. Subaru wouldn't be good shtf cars. I used to be a mechanic and those fuckers run hot and burn oil. Toyota is king. based nips.

I've got a '98 Jeep Grand w/5.2

Had to replace:
>x2 Alternator
>x2 power steering pump
>x1 CV joint
>x2 battery
Currently broken:
>Transfer case
>Driver side door handle
>Pas. window motor
>rear gate piston
>My dreams of a good Jeep
Leaks:
>Radiator
>Tranny (patched)
>Windows and doors let water in during heavy rainfall (every week here)
Also the cupholders are fucking trash and the radio is dildos.

Im getting a '06 avalanche for next to nothing so im not upset to see it go, but damnit it's distracting and after 4 years and 62000 miles with it, I can't help but love it.

>im not taking anyone but myself
That's a bad idea, but whatever
>hurr my $2000 vehicle has $20,000 worth of total rebuild in it
Hence the "hobbyist rock crawler" aspect and totally proves my point you cant trust OEM parts on old, high mileage vehicles
>tons of tools and spare parts in the bed
So you have no room for anything else huh
>hurr winch obstacles
Unless you have both front and rear winches to anchor with your shitbox toy doesn't have enough static traction
>drive over them
If its too big to pull or push out of the way its too tall to drive over in ANY vehicle that doesn't have a significant aftermarket lift, which introduce their own reliability and stability problems.
>mudding
Now you're just projecting. So trailers dont exist in your world? Other people being stuck or disabled dont exist in your world?

If you ever want to tow a trailer it will lack the power to drive on anything but flats/small grades. When you go to climb mountain highways you will be the guy doing 30 mph at 5k rpm pissing everyone off and pulling over every 5 minutes

assuming you are actually in a survival situation I think electric is far better. You can have solar panels and use the batteries for other purposes as well.

Combustion engine is just unreliable and has less uses. If you have access to gasoline you probably don't have much to worry about. In a natural disaster situation I think having an electric would be best.
