Why didn't anyone think about this in WW1/2?

Weight.
Because fuck you

>Weight
It wouldn't be an issue on a Twin engine heavy fighter, just get a mosquito and put a 20mm flexgun in the bubble canopy
>>33594305
cost-effectiveness
for double the build cost and double the manpower you get a shitty fighter, not a great deal

They did
Black Cats

>double the build cost
Literally get a DH.90 Mosquito and install a flex 20mm in the Bombadier's compartment
>>33594336
>double the manpower
Last time they checked it took 4 Shermans to kill one tiger

*DH.90 B Mk XVI

So I take it you've never hear of turret fighters or seen a bomber turret before?
During World War I pilots literally just shot at each other with pistols because no one had thought about mounting guns to planes
>>33594305
You don't know the first thing about air combat. Try aiming a turret while the plane is jolting around at 6g+.
>>33594456
I've never seen a Turret Fighter with forward facing guns, some of them also have a fixed armament, bomber flex mounts are purely defensive too.

>6g in piston WW2 fighter
Is this a thing? F-16 can do 9g, are you saying fighters in WW2 routinely went up to 6g turns?
>>33594305
They did and found that it wasn't as effective as your standard fighter.
Have you seen the crazy shit that came out of that era? They most definitely though of that and much more.
>>33594497
Not him, but WW2 most definitely went 6Gs and often above.
>>33594497
7g wasn't unheard of.
Antway, G limits only apply if you intend to use the aircraft again.
>>33594497
7g was generally the limit by policy, but most of the fighters could withstand up to 10 or 11g in short bursts. Of course, this depended on the design and also reduced the lifespan of the plane. 6-7g was also a practical limit, since the g-suits that did exist at the time weren't as effective as modern ones.
>>33594497
Almost all pusher configuration planes from WW1 utilize a flex mount for forward-firing machine guns.

Choose.
You lose your maneuverability the more weight you add, which is the most important part about being a real fighter. A gun like that does no good if the enemy outmaneuvers you and puts you in the defensive position. And then you get hosed and die.
