ANFO is arguably a tertiary explosive, I've heard even commercial blastic caps can be insufficient. You need blasting cap -> small secondary charge -> ANFO for reliability.

Once it really gets rolling, though, I think you can just pile on AN without additional diesel and it'll keep feeding the explosion. Not sure how it works chemically but that's what I heard.
