There's a pretty large "tactical" style precision rifle community in my state. A buddy and I are looking to join, but neither of us have done anything like it before (I shoot 3 Gun and USPSA, he comes to the range with me every month or so and only has a 22 and a bolt shotgun). Neither of us will probably ever go balls deep due to my work schedule and his budget.

The question is what would your top rifle recommendations be? I think I have an idea, broken into 3 tiers with 2 each. I'm open to suggestions, as all of this is based on second hand knowledge.
He'd probably want to go with .308 win for price considerations, I'd look into either 308 or 6.5cm. No magnum rounds allowed, targets out to 1,000 yards possible

Budget tier:
Savage Axis
Ruger American Predator

"Mid" level
Remington 700 SPS Tactical
Tikka T3x

"High" End
Ruger Precision
Savage 10 BA Stealth

Are you going to reload? Can you find H4350/H4831SC/RL17 near you?

Howa 1500 may be worthwhile to consider as well. I wouldn't do the Axis, the ruger American predator is likely a better option in that budget but still a thin barrel.

OEM rifles in chassis are typically overpriced; buy the two separately. Tikka CTR in 24" 6.5CM is probably your best option; Whittaker guns $820.

Scopes:
-PA 4-14 FFP
-SWFA 3-15 FFP
-Vortex 4-16 or 6-24 FFP

What's your budget?
>>
>>33585833
A buddy of mine had a Howa, but he's so full of shit when it comes to shooting that I never ask his opinion on stuff.

I'd probably order all of the components online if I were to reload. Currently I only do 38spc, but could expand to rifles.

>>33585833
Realistically, I'd probably want to be around $1,000 all in, but I could do more. Probably $1,500 max unless I sold a few for additional funds.

I'm not sure what his would be. Finally got him to join the military, so he'll have some signing bonus and money from bmt and tech school saved up. I imagine he'd be less than $1,000, which is why i dipped as low as the American and the Axis.
>>
>>33585863
Savage 10fcp-sr could be an alternative to the CTR and it's ~$300 cheaper. Go for 6.5 and do a 24" barrel whichever you choose. You can do fairly well with the Primary Arms 4-14; it's a good scope for the $
>>
>>33585952
I knew there was a savage I was forgetting, I just couldn't find it! Appreciate it anon
>>
>>33585863
Friend of mine was in the Swiss army and had some sniper training (apparently, they have a guy in some platoons that has basic sniper training and acts as a spotter / scout whilst shooting the occasional target of opportunity). He has a Howa 1500 and likes it a lot. Timney trigger, though. I suppose its a nice rifle, shot it a bit, but I'm not experienced at all.
>>
>>33585970
No problem. The 10T-SR is also a cool option exclusive at cabelas but they're sold out. Thicker barrel non fluted and 5r rifling.
>>
>>33585863
I have a Weatherby Vanguard, which is pretty much a Howa 1500, to the point where I could put in an AICS bottom metal made for the Howa 1500 without any alterations. It just feels really solid through and through, but there's nothing fancy about it. The sneering fudds here started shitting on the brand for being "the Toyota of bolt rifles", which I guess they might be right in, but it doesn't change the fact that it shoots well.
>>
>>33585756
There was a time when 308 Win was the best choice for people who don't reload, but these days one can get a bevy of excellent factory loads in superior chamberings. 6.5 Creed is better in every way, as are 7-08 and 243 Win. No reason not to go with one of those whether you are punching paper or killing things.

But honestly, if budget is so tight that slight differences in cost per round are a consideration you are probably not ready for centerfire LR shooting. You'd be best served getting that 22LR fit for shooting out to 300ish yards. You'll learn more about drift and drop by a damn sight both because 22LR at that distance is a great teacher and because you'll be able to shoot more.

As to rifle brand it matters little. Today's "tactical" shooters are mostly LARPing on a square range in bright sunshine. If fending actual fields conditions in any weather that may come is a objective, then rifle choice matters.

Whatever rifle you pick do yourself a favor and top it with a SWFA Super Sniper mounted in skookum rings like Burris XTR signatures.
>>
>>33586134
I'm a little hesitant to listen to the advice of the guys in the group. One has a $3,000 "budget" rifle. Another says that 223 is totally adequate for the match but 308 is a waste.

One thing I'm curious about, is I've seen several reports of repeated 1,000y shots with cheap guns like the Ruger American Predator. Obviously the nicer guns allow more customization and are higher quality, but theoretically, why couldn't a guy show up with one in something like 6.5cm and a good scope? You probably wouldn't win, but it'd cost you under $1,000 and is seemingly a solid choice

Hey guys. If I wanted a long range sub-moa rifle that could be taken down and maintain zero do I need to go for a chassis or can I go traditional stock? Also anyone have reliable fragmentation distances or velocities for different calibers/ loads.
>>
>>33586163
Don't want to speak to his budget, since I don't know what it is exactly. I can definitely feed a rifle, I'm just a cheap bitch. Though I agree that 22lr (or 223) is a great training aid.

Ideally I'd like to end up trying one of the adventure style shoots, like Mammoth, or something. But that may be a pipe dream. I know I'm definitely LARPing (I am tactical as fuck in 3 Gun), but I'm not a diva either. I expect a firearm to take some punishment
>>
>>33586210
If you expect to beat it up some I would avoid a Salvage. You can know anyone carrying one while claiming to shoot in tactical competitions is a poser.

Aren't Ruger Americans only like 40 bucks more than an Axis? I don't see why anyone would pick an Axis over that.
>>
>>33585952
10-FLCP left-hander here. Really enjoy it. Not a pro shooter by any means and I'm really accurate with it so far.

Get a Savage SA and you can change barrels for .243 and 6.5...

Wait for these to go on sale or rebate and get one in 6.5... They have them cheap pretty regularly... Switch out for a 20MOA rail and drop on optic of choice.

This. Go with savage, you can literally do barrel swaps yourself.

Savage shooter here, have a sub $1500 setup right now, shooting 243 win out to 800 yds with ease at my local range.

Thr two guys with nightforce and Schmidt and bender optics on their custom rigs were impressed with me putting rounds that far. This is on commercial ammo too btw. I had a great day with those gentleman and learned a lot
>>
>>33585863
vote for Howa 1500 #6 and Savage 10T here. that and a swfa x12 or X10 . boyds stock would be a nice plus too imo
>>
>>33587596
I think with the amount of dedication I plan on putting into it, that the Savage would probably make the most sense. Throw a decent scope on top of it and the end roughly thousand dollars for the total package before I start buying gear and whatever else I might need
>>
>>33585756
As someone who owns multiple Accuracy Internationals, I suggest grabbing a Remington 700 SPS (In .308), put a 20MOA rail on it, and spend at least 1000 on glass. You can find a used NightForce NXS in that range. At that point you wont ever NEED any more gear, even out to 1200yards, but you have a platform that allows you to upgrade/trick it out if you really want to.

When i get home i will post picture.

But i built a 6.5 cm Howa 1500. And it is great.

I got the howa 1500 heavy varmit barreled action from brownells. A mpa chassis , swfa 3-15 and harris bipod.

All in i was at $1300 thanks to sales.

I am not a good shot. But pf bipod i am getting 5 shot 3/4 moa with hornady factory xld ammo
>>
>>33585756
308 is not going to make it to 1000 yards and be in any way competitive
>>
>>33589325
dude you already made a thread about that last night. no, its a fucking hunting rifle. precision shooting means bullet on top of bullet groups at 300 yards. that thing will be lucky to put rounds in a 4 inch group at 300 yards. good enough for hunting, but not for precision competitions

Though I mostly just use it to ring steel.

It's actually a primarily steel series. There's some paper, but all of the ranked stuff is steel, I believe

What's the general consensus on the Patriot line of rifles from Mossberg? I'm doing a bedding job on mine this week and I'm going to try to take it out to 600 yards in early May, so I'm curious if anyone has any experience with how well these shoot. I'd like to build a new rifle, but I'm trying to move out of state, so it'll be a bit till I do that.

I've been loading 168gn Hornady match 308's with 1gn under max and I plan to take them out next weekend and see how they perform. I've got my fingers crossed that I'll at least be on paper out at 600.
>>
>>33586134

Tell me more about that Vanguard please, im stuck deciding between that and a ruger american in 30-06
>>
cartridge
308 is great to play with and learn the 6.5 are more 'factory out of the box' long range.
243 is a good in between

TOP reccomendation:
GAP RIFLE (choose your flavor)
Night force scope, S&B, etc
(Vortex scope fo budget)
Atlas bipod
A rear bag, a good spotting scope , a journal
Good ammo (blackhills)

Second best: a trued and blueprinted tikka or rem700. Hopefully in a good stock or chassis
Vortex scope or swfa

Last: a stock rem 700 or tikka

Would not suggest: howa, mossberg riifles, the axis .
>>
>>33593093
Reasoning
Yes, my recomendations are expensive, but their done right and guaranteed.
You can slowly build your own and end up actually just making a worse shooting rifle. Its expensive. If i could do it over again , i would have bought the custom rifle out of the gate
>>
>>33589688
The tikas have the wimpiest feeling bolt in the world though... Probably meant for limp Finnish wrists...
>>
>>33592727
Mossberg is not a name associated with precision shooting.
>>
>>33593202
I had a lot of difficulty finding decent MOA reports from the Mossberg predator. Only review I could fine a year ago was a guy bragging about 1.5" groups at 50 yards. Turned me off from them completely.
>>
>>33585833
im looking for a 308 bolt gun in the mid range the the howa 1500 is on my considerations list. everything ive read about them seems to lend to the idea that theyre great and underappreciated value for the money.
another option im thinking of a tikka. too bad they dont make a varmit in 308, thats the config i want.
>>
>>33593175
>implying easy bolt lift and smooth throw is a bad thing

>>33592727
Man, atleast do some load development instead of a shot in the dark.

>>33593093
Rationale for NF over vortex? NF's don't have great glass. Also, you could do better than a GAP for the $ on a precision rifle.
>>
>>33593253
CTR 24" 308 is probably close enough. They're coming out with the TAC model which is just a threaded Varmint.
>>
>>33586199
anyone?
>>
>>33593344
well, I'm not going to even attempt load dev until I'm bedded and zero'd.
>>
>>33592644
I love them. I shoot every gun i have with them.

I have a thunderbeast ultra 7 6.5 i. Jail for this.

You need a wrap though. Other wise after 5 or 6 shots the mirage is a problem.
>>
>>33593253
The 1500 is great.

Pair it with a bell&carlson medalis stock and you are in the game.

The barreled actions are available direct from brownells .

The triger is adjustable and very clean.

I have the elite iron wrap. It was cheap and works great.

You can maje your own, if you dont mind working with fiberglass. Ive seen some as simple as fiberglass and nomex held on by straps.
