During the development of the Tango 51, Tac Ops took a standard 26-inch barrel and cut it down to 18 inches in one-inch increments. Between 10 to 20 rounds were fired at each increment. They found that a 20-inch barrel provides for a complete propellant burn and no velocity loss when using Federal Match 168-grain BTHP, a cartridge that has become something of a law enforcement standard. Going to an 18-inch barrel only resulted in a loss of 32 feet per second (fps).

Was thinking of getting a 24" barrel on my next rifle. Should I just get 20" instead?
The store also has a 20" with a threaded end, so I can use a muzzle brake if I want (not available in the 24" without gunsmithing).

Link to source of info? I got a Savage model 10 FCP-SR 20" and regret nothing.

OP here
I can see this being different with slower/faster burning powders.
I imagine a 24-26" barrel would do well with slower burning powders, where 18-20" would do well with a bit of a faster burn

Cheers, and definitely get the 20", all things being equal shorter barrels are more rigid.
>>33585802
That's a point they make. 20" it is.
Plus now I can have a threaded barrel for muh muzzle brake
>>33585818
What break? I'm looking at a king comp
>>33585828
No idea, I'll have to see what's available. I usually check amazon ratings and youtube reviews if I'm not sure.
>>33585834
Strike industries King-Comp seems to be a really good option, only $45
What rifle are you considering?
So how does barrel length equal to penis lengths?
16in=5 1/2in?
8in=coke can?
20-24in=pringles can?
>>33585856
Howa 1500. Really cheap here, at least half the price of a Reminton 700.
Only thing is, the 20" seems to only be available with a fluted heavy barrel, not a normal one.
Not sure if I should get it that way.
>>33585736
The very test you linked showed almost no velocity loss, so why do you think a longer barrel is still necessary?
Barrel length is a fucking meme.
>>33585859
It goes by caliber.
>>33585864
If you're using it as a target rifle just do it, if it's a pack rifle maybe lift more?
>>33585875
The weight isn't an issue.
It's just that I've heard mixed things on barrel fluting.
I hear that it may actually make the barrel stiffer, but I also hear the machining process adds stress to the barrel.
I'd actually prefer 20" threaded without fluting, but I think that 20" fluted is better than 24" unfluted.
And I squat 275kg don't tell me to lift more lmao
>>33585736
>complete propellant burn
so no flash hider necessarry?
>>33585913
It probably depends on the powder's burn rate.
Plus there would always be a bit of flash
Unless you only shoot gold meme match, you will pick up a lot of velocity with the 26" and hand loads. I'm hitting 2800fps with a 168 AMAX bullet and about 2770 with a 175gr SMK... That makes fuck all difference at 200 yards but helps a lot when we approach 1000...
>>33585942
Is that increase in velocity from milking the slower burning powders with the extra barrel length?
I was hoping to shoot 1000m one day. Doable with 20"?
>>33585958
By the time you're confident enough to move out to 1000 you're probably gonna need a new barrel anyway. If not the 20 will still get you there, it'll just be a little more tricky

But that contradicts all other data I've seen on the subject, e.g. http://rifleshooter.com/2014/12/308-winchester-7-62x51mm-nato-barrel-length-versus-velocity-28-to-16-5/
