Wouldn't a katana be very useful for attacking around corners?
For example if someone is clearing a building you're in, and you see the barrel of his rifle poke around the corner, you swing around and draw the katana in an upward slice.

Katana swords are used for a slicing method which would damage the sword itself if trying to cut a barrel of a rifle or cause damage. because of the folding method used they are more flimsy against such metal.
A better sword would be a European model. Bastard swords are meant to take a beating but can still slice and stab.

You obviously have never used a sword or know their tolerances. Each weapon has their strength and weaknesses. A Katana blade made with folding methods verses a gun barrel will lose each and every time.
