In my wonderful state i can only hunt with single action guns no semis.

My plan is to get a cheap sks take the gas block off. Weld / drill tap and put a hex screw in the hole.

Boom straight pull sks for hunting.

Thoughts?
>>
>>33574927
A cheap SKS nowadays is like 450 bucks and it's getting hard to find good ones, so don't do that.

You can get a new Savage Axis for like $330 and it'll kill durr better than an SKS can.
>>
Just buy a cheap durr gun, a good one will be less than a sks and you don't have to bastardize an otherwise good rifle

Neat idea.
No.

Just buy a yugo my man there's a single shot option
>>
We're not getting any more rifles in this country. Don't do it
>>
>>33574927
You should avoid plugging the gas block. This way, you'll be reminded how dumb of an idea this is every time you fire your rifle.

Don't, just get a cheap fudd blaster. SKS's aren't cheap anymore and won't be getting any cheaper, and you'll be investing $450+your time to get the functionality of a $350 rifle with absolutely no resale value.
>>
>>33574950
I live in wisconsin and you can still find 300-350 dollar sks's. Please dont niggerrig any sks when you can just buy a yugo sks or a k31.

>>
>>33574927
Try running that by any trained gunsmith and they'll tell you how bad of an idea that is.
>>
>>33575100
You just have to look around(pawn shops, gun stores, gun shows ect.)just make sure the barrel isn't rusted out on the inside.

Honestly you might as well get a CZ527, it'll be more accurate and just nicer than a molested SKS.
>>
>>33575100
>>33575114
Small town gun shows, cheap used guns in shops that no one takes interest in, ect. You could make single shot abominations out of *quality* parts you find at most shows, keeping it inbetween 50-200 bucks.
>>
>>33575100
Even with inflated prices, nuggets run around $250, which is cheaper than an SKS.

The point was a fun idea/project

Something special. Also sks's suck anyways. Why wpuld i want one when i can get an ak?
>>
>>33576007
Because it's fun, nice shooter and has some history behind it, and it's somewhat of a collectible. That's why. Sure, AK's better in almost every respect. So? This doesn't stop 1911 people.

No point butchering a rifle into something it isn't when there's many more suitable solutions. What would be a nice bit of challenge would be making it into para / handy little rifle. Carve your stock, maybe come up with some sidefolder if you are into metalworking. Blue the metal parts, stain and varnish the wood. Make it nice and look like you put some effort into it.
>>
>>33575054
>yugo sks or a k31

Yugo's go for $450, minimum, and K31's are in the $600-$700 range.

And no one cares if you bubba a china SKS, those things are shit tier.
>>
Why would this blow up?
>>
Is there any point in trying to put a rail on an SKS if you aren't drilling into the receiver? Seems like the bolt cover replacements take a shitload of filing and simply don't maintain zero since they are constantly being knocked around.
>>
Ruin a $400 gun rather than buy a $400 gun?

Swell idea.
>>
>>33578130
I've seen some replacements for the rear sight for scope mount, might be usable with tech sights maybe?
>>
>>33574927
FFS just go get a Savage Axis or one of those new Henry single shot rifles that are coming out next month.
>>
>>33576135
The original Chinese type 56 isn't shit tier. Quite a good accurate rifle, built on original Russian tooling.

>>
>>33574927
is there a law against semi-auto hunting?

you can get a Yugo SKS and close the gas port with the grenade launcher switch, its effectively a straight pull.
My friend and I did accuracy tests at 100 yards with his and it was marginally more accurate, but not by much.
>>
>Buy any SKS
>remove gas piston rod from gas tube

Somewhat related to this thread,
I'm an Australian looking for a good single action rifle for hunting, we're not allowed any semis here.
anyone recommend and reliable one? Looking for something nice with a wooden stock, my budget is about 1000 AUD
>>
>>33582118
Don't you aussies have new-production Lee-Enfields?
>>
>>33582217
I haven't heard about new ones but if so that might be good, I've been thinking the Lee Enfield might be a good one, also had my eye on the winchester model 70
>>
>>33582072
yes theres a law agenst it in my state. thats why i said it at the beginning

cant use a switch the rifle must be made so that it can not be turned into semi auto mode easily while out hunting
>>
>>33574927
Just take the piston out, no need to permanently modify the rifle.
>>
>>33579994
Looks pretty slick, actually. Think you could get away with co-witness mount and tech sights or would you have to do mother-of-all-chinwelds to use the reddot?
>>
>>33582078
>>33582535
I wouldn't do this because it'd just spray gas everywhere where you wouldn't want it, instead buy a spare operating rod (not the piston) and cut it down an inch so it can't impinge on the bolt carrier.
>>
>>33582040

>>
>>33580037

>>
>>33574927
I've actually been working on something similar for an ak pistol to skirt the bullshit in Commiefornia. I'll weld a plug in a spare gas tube and put that one on the gun when I bring it home to CA but if I need it, I could theoretically throw the unmodified gas tube on it.
>>
>>33581110
stamped receivers
>>
>>33575015
This. The yugo has a gas system cutoff for the rifle grenade launcher.

Assuming you're from PA based on your predicament (I'm from PA and I think we're the only non-semi state) just buy a 30-30. Literally everywhere has ammo and it's a pretty good gun for the majority of hunting you'll do here.

Do you mean single shot or just anything that isn't semi-auto?
>>
or, buy a Savage Axis or Edge or whatever they're calling it these days, or a Ruger American, or a Mossberg whatever-is-cheap, or a budget Rem 700
hell, buy a Weatherby/Howa

SKS use an inferior cartridge for hunting
yes, there is good ammo available, but the selection is inferior to .270 or .308 or .30-30, and it's inferior ballistically to any common deer cartridge except .30-30
the triggers are crap compared to budget bolt guns
any scope mounting options are inferior and/or require permanent modification
mechanical accuracy varies greatly, and, if you get a non-lined Yugo, you run the risk of getting a corroded bore

so, you could either spend $350 on a Yugo or beat to shit commercial chink SKS, and then spend for a scope and scope mount, and then do you your stupid modifications that will completely destroy any value the SKS had (seriously, you will never sell it) to get an inferior hunting rifle with poor accuracy, and unsteady scope mount, and a shit trigger

or, you could spend $350 and get a contemporary bolt action rifle in a superior caliber, with better accuracy, trigger, scope mount, and included scope

there's two options under $350 and two under $500, all superior to an SKS with your retarded modifications and with a scope included
not to mention warranty service
>>
>>33576007
>fun project
if you want a fun project, restore a gun to shootable condition instead of ruining a perfectly good one

cruise estate sales and you can probably find cheap as shit break action shotgun that's rusted shut but just needs some elbow grease and new springs
chop the barrel down to whatever to remove the choke and drill tap for a scope or add iron sights
>>
>>33585182
get a Yugo and do the same
set the gas cutoff to closed/off
>>
>>33576135

there are tons of those

other times, a family member pays full price to help the seller out

why is that state overflowing with SKSs?
IL has basically none, I never see them in stores
I visit WI and every pawn shop has 1 or 2 Chinese or Yugo SKSs, and bigger dedicated shops will have 3 or 4

>>33574927
>I need a deer rifle
>I could buy a $300 modern rifle built for deer hunting

Btw a fucking Yugo can fire single action without any modification. Yugos have adjustable gas systems for firing rifle grenades, when firing a grenade a blank is chambered and the rifles gas system is put into single action mode.

Off topic but how common of an issue are slam fires? If you clean your gun do you really need a springloaded firing pin? I got a yugo sks here and had slme light primer strikes when i first took it out to shoot i think this issue was caused by gunk not allowing the firing pin to move freely. The issue seemed to resolve after a few reloads. Went home and cleaned up the firing pin. Gun shot very well but slamfires are a but worrying.
