Takes about 2 minutes to remove the mag disconnect. Really improves the trigger.

I have a Hungarian but one of the early true hipower clones. I adore it.
>>
>>33574556
Meh, I'd rather have the hi power, you can get similar capacity mags for the browning, I like the grip better, and I have no use for double action.

Can't go wrong with either.
>>

>>33574742

>>
>>33574743
The hi power had at two note worthy improvements over the 1911 out side of caliber and capacity.

It did away with the separate barrel bushing, making field strip quicker and less risky (more parts means more likely to lose something) and it got rid of the barrel link, reducing the time and labor necessary to build the gun.
>>
>>33574809
Browning really wanted to showup the 1911
>>
>>33574833
As much as I like the 1911, hell I own two 1911s and no hi powers, I think he managed to do that.
The hi power went on to be a widely successful pistol with Western/NATO militaries and pistol, although it has issues with frame durability and service life because of it, they were known as being reliable service pistols.

Awesome pistols, if a bit outdated. If you get one, try to get one with the big ambi safety since it clicks on and off the same as a 1911. The smaller ones tend to be mushy and stiff.

Also, remove the magazine disconnect.
>>
>>33574833
Why would Browning feel the need to "show up" a weapon they originally designed?

Love it. I specifically wanted a blued FN marked example, but the way they are listed on California's asstarded pistol roster makes FFLs reluctant to process them since they can't tell if it's "allowed" or not. The best one in my area will allow it if it has a year explicitly stamped somewhere on the pistol that is over 50 years ago since they're aware of the C&R exemption.

That's how I ended up settling for an Inglis.

>had their heads up their ass

I was one of the most popular combat sidearms in the world. They produced well over a million, with many of them going to military contracts. In tge 70s it was a "wonder nine" and pretty much a luxury pistol in the civilian market. They were consistently bought even at the ridiculous prices they were being sold for. In their eyes it was a winning formula, with no reason for change.
>>
>>33574492
I carried one of these lumps around for quite a few years.
They're ok as a 'Basic Pistol' with decent capacity, kind of not great sights, good reliability and fairly limited with what you can easily do with them.

Essentially, with a bit of fiddling to the frame and slide to accept accessories easily, improved sights it could live on for ages as mechanically there's nothing inordinately wrong with them or any worse than any number of 9mm autos. Course, the big Q there is would anyone want a modernised HP when there's dozens of others doing much the same shit
>>
>>33574492
Hand fedora. Its owners should turn it on themselves and stop wasting resources that would otherwise go towards non-defective people.

It's called making an improvement.

It's like if Glock released a new series that made it have a better slide release and furthered reliability and capacity.

>>33575043
As in marketed it better in this modern age. Going at about the late 70's - Early 80's, they should've seen the competition and attempted to make improvements to keep their contracts as well as get more into the growing civilian market.

If you look now, most Browning HPs are really costly for what you get out of a new MSRP one now when compared to the other Steel "Wonder Nines".
>>
>>33575064
There simply isn't "dozens" of steel single action only 9mms.
Though the reason of course is that the market for SAO autoloaders is very small these days, practically non existent if you don't count the 1911.

>The fact that it's one of the last guns designed by JMB

That's a weird way to spell Dieudonné Saive. ;)

Not to diminish JMB, but he worked on the Grand Rendement for french trials and failed. JMB's design for the High Power was very extensively modified by Dieudonné Saive as soon as some patents timed out, allowing him to use some JMB designs which JMB himself was not allowed to use previously.

So yes, JMB designed components, but the whole combination was Saive's work.

The only major flaw in the original design is that the spur hammer is likely to bite you a bit. This was fixed with later round hammers.
Obviously, the magazine disconnect has no value to us and should be removed to improve triggerpull. Personally, I believe the HP had the mag disconnect to allow the owner to drop the mag when in an altercation (say a cop that's been jumped and they're wrestling for the gun). Once the mag is dropped, the gun won't fire and can't be used against the owner (unless the assailant knows that he can stick his finger down the mag well & depress the mag safety).

I'm actually about to zero mine and make sure this ring hammer works. I switched from a Springfield 1911 GI last summer and it's been an absolute treat. I'm still new to pistol shooting and the last time I used the laser I put ten rounds into one hole at ten yards, a personal best and a nice confidence boost. I didn't have the Allen key to adjust the laser, though, so I'm back for more practice.
>>
Excellent gun. It's a shame there's no secondary/custom market for them like the 1911, which would have kept it relevant. Sad the Canucks are just destroying their old ones.
>>
>>33575310
Are you insane? Theres plenty of aftermarket and custom work on hi powers.

It's a wonderful pistol though the trigger transfer bar and magazine disconnect complicate the action and hinder the trigger pull. One can remove the magazine disconnect to improve the trigger pull, but out of the box they feel rather heavy.

Mine is an early postwar gun but I haven't been able to accurately date it. 1952-53 is my best guess based upon the serial number.

Was the standard Service pistol for the British Army until embarrassingly recently.

Generally accepted that throwing it at the enemy would be more effective (admittedly most likely down to a shagged-out fleet and dire marksmanship...).

Also the cause of countless generations of sheepish officers being disciplined, as the mag disconnect was notorious for contributing to NDs. To the extent that some unloading bays apparently had a dedicated empty mag chained to them to ensure there were no "accidents"...
>>

There's a lot of them, they're paid for and we're unlikely to really use them very much. Lets face it, if you're an officer and down to el pistolero, you're kind of in the shit to the point where it won't make much difference what you're shooting. recently inherited one as my first fun; apparently my grandfather only used it once.
1972, non ring hammer
fucking love it to death, but I have literally never shot another handgun except for a .22 so I have no reference.

Here. There is a little hole in the slide along the cocking grooves.

Does that have to do anything with the mag disconnect he was talking about?

how's it for edc? have you guys ever had any sort of problem with it?

my dad told me this story of a friend of his that almost got killed when his HP with brand new (fiocchi?) ammo stovepiped, he got one guy but in the 3-4th shot the gun had a stovepipe and the other nugga got him some 4 times.

Got it used. Previous owner added new trigger, ambi safety lever, and removed the mag disconnect. I just swapped the wood grip panels with thin plastic ones. Navidrex?

hate to say it, but this could very well be the perfect full size carry/home defense gun for me.

the ambi 1911-like safety is just perfect.

i think that pachmayr grips would compliment the gun very well.

fucking god, i really want one.

The only trouble I've ever had with mine was with some incredibly shit ammo, "MaxxTech" brand. I had about one failure to extract every 1-2 mags.

My kid brother gave me about 250 rounds of this shit because his Glock 17 could not run more than 2-3 shots without fouling up on it. Unbelievably bad ammo.

Let me repeat that just to be clear: my 30+ year old surplus Hi Power ran the shittiest ammo ever better than my brother's G17. I swear am not a Glock hater at all, but I gotta admit I was pretty pleased with my BHP after that.

For carry: It's a full size, steel framed gun, there's no getting around that, but I think among guns in the same class it carries really well. I love it.

That's a pretty damn terrifying story about your dad's friend, but that's just a life's-a-bitch moment. There is NO GUN ON EARTH that you can carry and get a magic free pass and never worry about malfs.

Its ugly fatter and has a shitty to grab onto slide tho

Im guessing youve never built anything and then afterwards thought hey I think I could build it better now with what I know.
>>
It has nice recoil. Good for a beginner's weapon and that's just about it. Wouldn't use it for home defense unless you already have it.
