17hmr vs 22lr.

Which ones better?
>>
>>33566273
.22 Magnum
>>
>>33566273
Depends, what do you want to do with it?
>>
>>33566273

17 is better for basically every sporting purpose. .22 is better at being dirt cheap while still being completely functional
>>
>>33566273
My firearm instructor told everyone in my course to never get 17hmr. Because they're a pain in the ass to clean. Since the bore is so fucking small.
>>
>>33566566
Somehow I had never thought about that until just now.
I wonder if just some thick string soaked with CLP would do the trick
>>
Ballistics 17hmr is way better

For suppression and price .22lr is far better.
>>
>>33566566
They aren't particularly anymore difficult to clean, you just need to clean them more often.
>>
>>33566597
Pellet rifle cleaning rod. .177 caliber.
>>
>>33566566
Or you could just buy a $10 .17 hmr boresnake and a small ramrod.
>>
>>33566273
.17 HMR is a great round, super flat, awesome in a bolt action.
.22LR is good for cheap plinking.
>>
>>33566273
4.5x26R.
>>
>>33566273
Can I use 17hmr for durr hunting?
>>
>>33567912
Depends, are you a poacher without any moral scruples?
>>
>>33567912
Can I use 2mm Colibri for rhino hunting?
>>
>>33566508

>>
>>33567928
Is 17hmr good for poaching? What are the characteristics that a good poaching round should have?
>>
>>33568154

There are no dumb questions. Except for the one you just asked.
>>
>>33568221
I don't know anything about poaching. Do poachers use different firearms than any other sort of hunter?
>>
>>33568248

I don't know anything about poaching either, but I know the answer to your question via common sense.

Poachers use big bullets that go medium fast, not tiny bullets that go really fast (.17).
>>
>>33567912
I mean, you could pop a small doe in the head at under 50 yards and kill it, but it's not very recommended.
>>
>>33566273
Would 17hmr be a good self defense round in an automatic PDW?
>>
17 hmr explodes upon impact, similiar to .30 carbine.
>>
>>33568701
Like a slightly downsized 5.7

Wouldn't defeat most armor though, which is the point of 5.7
>>
>>33568248
Usually full auto with silencers and laser scopes. Sometimes bazookas.
>>
>>33566508
>22lr
>completely functional
wew
>>
>>33568248
Yes. Serious poachers (the US/Canadian ones that do it to sell trophy antlers) use quiet guns, because it reduces their likelihood of getting caught. Subsonic .22lr is the most common poaching round in the world by several orders of magnitude.
>>
>>33568701
>rimmed
>rimfire unreliable ignition
lolno
>>
>>33569367
What if you make it an automatic volley gun so that if one chamber misfires the others are still shooting out bullets? Like maybe a cluster of four barrels each firing automatically.
>>
>>33566566
Yeah it's a real bitch to fit a .22 cleaning rod in there.

>>33566508
>functional
The .17HMR can work for semi-auto, you just can't use straight blowback, rather a delayed blowback or locked breech gas operation is necessary.

>>33567798
This probably works actually.

>>33568221
What are you poaching, chickens?
>>
>>33569429
he didn't imply .17 HMR isn't functional, just that .22lr is despite it being much cheaper though basically ballistically inferior
>>
>>33569354
The .17 HMR came out in the 2004. The .22LR came out in the late 1887.

Since the first .17HMR was basically some wildcat gun 117 years after the first .22LR was made it seems like there'd be a few more .22LR guns floating around out there.
>>
>>33568701
>modern american 180 in .17

wew make it happen
>>
>>33566273
you mean .223 vs 22lr? because 17hmr is a meme
>>
>>33567885
.223 is cheaper than 17 hmr, there is literally no reason to get 17 hmr
>>
>>33567994
yep! if you take 300 of them and ram them into a punt gun!
>>
>>33569429

Oh, I wasnt implying .17 is less "functional" in any way, just that .22LR works fine for general plinking/pest removal/nigger removal purposes
>>
>>33569876
>giant shotgun

yes please
>>
>>33569817
my brother has taken down 120lb deer with it

its a lot more lethal than people give credit
>>
>>33570026
oh i didnt say it wasnt lethal. its just a meme because of price. if it actually costed what an inexpensive rimfire cartridge is supposed to cost, it would be a great little round. but you can buy .223 for half the price of 17hmr, and have a lot more versatile gun and better selection of ammo
>>
>>33570063
oh fuck never realized that, never honestly priced it out, just knew my younger brother has taken a few deer with it.

>i got a .270
>younger brother got .17 hmr when it was time for him

i dont know if dad thought he was a pussy, or he was tired of sighting in the kids rifles.
>>
>>33569737
Okay, let me rephrase.

More poachers use .22lr than ALL OTHER CALIBERS *COMBINED* by at least 1 order of magnitude (10x more), if not more. On a year-by-year basis ~93% of animals in the US that are confirmed to have been poached were done with a .22lr, out of the approximately 1300 SAAMI-recognized calibers in current widespread production.
>>
I want to know which ones better as a round. not compare the prices
>>
>>33570207
17 is faster, flatter, more powerful, and dumps energy more efficiently.

.22 is better though.
>>
>>33570235
Why is it better tho?
>>
>>33570251
Doesn't get BTFO by wind.

Readily available subsonic loadings.

At the high end, *significantly* more mechanically accurate.
>>
>>33570146
I'm not him, but now you've got me curious about this subject. What kind of animals are most often poached?

Also, how much of this is commercial poaching, and how much of it is dumbass teenagers taking potshots at squirrels and birds in their backyard?

>Kel-Tec perfection
>>
>>33570657
By arrests it's 80% stupid people being stupid, 19% commercial/for-profit, and 1% genuine-food-needs. By animals seized or confirmed killed it's 70% commercial/for-profit, 3% genuine-food-needs, and 27% people being stupid.

At least according to USFWS, which compiles available data from state DNRs and occasionally conducts their own studies.
>>
>>33570773
Interesting. Do they still send you to the slammer if you're doing it for "genuine food needs"?
>>
>>33570773
I thought you were allowed to poach if it was a legit food reason?
Or is that like state level laws, I THINK in Florida you can shoot deer out of season, but only literally if you live innawoods.

Unless that old guy was lying to , man he had a cozy cabin.
>>
>>33570146
That could mean that animals are more likely to be confirmed as poached if they were shot with a .22, not necessarily that poachers are more likely to use .22s.
>>
>>33570786
Depends on the area. Around me if they know you actually need the food you normally don't even get a ticket (and they may slip you food or seized animals on the side). They're good people around here. But I've heard horror stories of other areas (particularly west coast and northeast US) of "no exceptions end of story". Since those stats only track arrests and citations you'll never know how many people got caught but not cited for it.

>>33570811
AFAIK no state has a "but I'm starving" exemption, but a lot of places have wardens that are legit good people and will look the other way as long as you don't get too crazy.

A lot of places DO have a system to allow landowners to dispose of or dispatch nuisance animals outside of season, one of the ranches I take guided hunts on has a KOS permit for grizzly bear because it's a multimillion dollar sheep ranch and they really hurt the sheep populations. They got an exemption from the DNR where they can kill any and all bears any time of the year, with the caveat you cannot keep any trophy or resellable parts (though meat is okay as long as it's not sold commercially).
>>
>>33570848
While you are correct to an extent, the overwhelming majority are actually confirmed (there's an "unidentified/other" category) and the difference is so fucking massive that even if it's off a percent or two it's still very very clear and definite.
>>
>>33570146
do they count shooting pests like raccoons and possums as poaching though?
>>
>>33566273
.22 hornet
>>
>>33566273
They both work. May as well us 22 for the price.
>>
>>33569766
That'd be insane.

Or conversely, a 180 in .22 Magnum.
>>
>>33569826
Super light gun with really flat trajectory and not ruining meat/pelt when shooting a really small critter.
>>
>>33570063
The .22LR has an absolutely giant, worldwide economy of scale, probably the largest economy of scale of any cartridge ever.

It's gonna be a bit of a challenge to match it with any cartridge, even using similar tech and equipment.
>>
>>33574267
again, you can do all of that with a .223 and you have infinitely more choices in bullet loadings, velocity, bullet material, etc.

and i can tell you have zero fucking experience with 17 hmr to think that you wouldnt ruin meat or a pelt on a small animal. 17hmr blows little animals the fuck up and turns their guts inside out. seriously, why do you bother commenting on something you have no knowledge or first hand experience with?

>>33574267
this is what 17 hmr does to a squirrel inside 150 yards

does this look like unruined meat or pelt?

at least with a .223 rifle, you can easily buy a chamber insert to shoot 22lr if you didnt already own a 22lr for some reason and wanted to small game hunt for meat. with the benefit that you could swap back out to using higher weight and velocity 223 for hunting bigger game. what can you do with a 17hmr? blow up small critters. well you can do that with regular 223, for a fraction of the price using steel case russian ammo from walmart

>17hmr vs 22lr.Which ones better?

They are bot good.

There is no such thing as subsonic .17 though

So 22 wins because it is more versatile.

But .17 is very accurate and has greater range for hunting and pests

>My firearm instructor told everyone in my course to never get 17hmr. Because they're a pain in the ass to clean. Since the bore is so fucking small.

So buy a .17 kit for fuck sake.
