It's currently sitting over at my FFL waiting for him to work through the huge stack of guns he has to record. Says it probably won't be available until tomorrow morning ;-;

I've been holding off getting a Mosin since it seemed likely the Trump would drop the sanctions against Russia, more Mosins would be imported, and thus cheap Nuggets would return. Any thoughts on this situation? Should I just go a head and speend $260+ on a Nugget, or continue to hold out hope for the sanctions to drop?

>>33569276
honestly, even if sanctions drop the nuggets are not likely to come down in price.

most likely the only thing that will drop in price will be SVTs (which have a separate ban that wouldnt end with the sanctions)

Nuggets and Maks are popular enough that flooding the market isnt going to devalue them (unless an LGS has one or two that sit for a couple years, but at the ~$300 price range they wont be desperate to 'free the inventory' they'll just let it sit.

ammo prices may come down though.
>>
>>33569276
Why the fuck will Mosins be $100 again? What do you think the importers were paying per rifle so you can buy one from Big 5 for $60 or $100? Why would Russia sell a Mosin for $3-$5 per rifle, when they could sell the same gun in a Russian gun shop for $400? It's not 1995 anymore.

Most Mosins weren't even imported from Russia, but from the Ukraine.

Found a Rock Island 1903 in a pawn shop for $500 US. The stock is in poor shape and the screw-knob that locks the sight reticule is broken but the rifle itself seems mechanically sound with just a little discoloration on the receiver and the barrel looked surprisingly good.
Just two beaners in there that probably don't know what they fuck they're talking about so I figure I could most likely walk away for $450 or potentially even less when I point out the glaring deficiencies of the piece.
Should I?

How does buying guns online work (in the US)? I find an FFL that will do transfers, get a copy of his paperwork and email/mail/fax it to the person/company I bought from, they send the gun to the FFL, he calls me and says it's in, then I go in and do a 4473 and he hands me the weapon?

Bought one of those rough Spanish 1916s online. Total shipped to me was $135. This is before I cleaned it up, and I don't have an pic of it now.

A crack in the handguard and fore end near the muzzle. Virtually no finish on the rifle, surface rust everywhere, and some pitting on the barrel, but it functions fine and the bore is actually in pretty good shape. No broken parts.

Loaded up 5 rounds the other day using a minimum recommended load, and it shot just fine. I suppose sometime this week I'll take it out to 100 yards and see how accurate it is.
>>
>>33579625
I paid 20% of the total and now have 90 days to pay the remainder, during which they can't sell to someone else. I normally just buy things but I don't have anywhere to store guns rn.

These are not first time rifles boss. The SVT will be $1000 minimum (mine was $1300) and the Russian 1895 will be at least $2000, with $4000 being the more likely price. You want a babies first milsurp that isn't a Mosin? Get a Turkish or South American Mauser.

No markings, just a serial number. But VERY little rust and pitting, the hand guard by the sights is cracked and a chip is taken out of the bottom near the sight.

I just got this little holster from centerfire, it's cute, cost a couple bucks, and fits my CZ-52 as well as anybody could ask. Only problem is that it doesn't come with belt loops, just this peg-based attachment system. I assume it would plug into one of those web belts with the spaced eyelet holes, but I don't have one and don't want one.
I'd rather just have a small piece of material with four of the holes which I could securely attach with the peg-system then thread my belt through, making a belt loop. Does something like that exist, or do I need to go Jo-Ann and buy some canvas and eyelets?

Anon its probably not the trigger. To test. hold the trigger down as you close the bolt. Is it still rough? If yes then the trigger had nothing to do with it.

Most of the masuer safety issues are form the cocking piece not lining up with the safety cam.

Push the back of the cocking piece down, or pull it back slighly as you rotate the safety. See if that magic's the whole issue.

>hold the trigger down as you close the bolt. Is it still rough?

it's actually a lot smoother like way fucking smoother. that's a kick ass trick. but what the hell does it mean?
>>
>>33588891
It means either the trigger/sear surface is somehow goobered, or the spring/firingpin/safety is goobered somehow.

Holding the trigger down just rotates the sear down so it doesn't catch on the cocking piece. Allowing the bolt to go into battery without being cocked.

Next step should be to pull the internals out and see if something is broke inside.

My money would be on the spring being broken or maybe the cocking piece having a burr
>>
>>33588891

I tested a bit more and maybe I am too used to how ridiculously rough moving the bolt was before. I do notice some roughness in closing when pulling the trigger.

but that could also be from me using my weaker hand since I pull the trigger with my right hand and close the bolt with the right as well.
>>
>>33588949

> trigger/sear surface is somehow goobered

the local gunsmith said the back of the sear looked like it had been filed down or some shit. He stated that was the most likely cause of the closing bolt and safety being a bitch.

Note on this one. The ledge on the cocking peace where the top boxes are tends to get a nasty burr and will prevent the safety from engaging, the striker from falling all the way, or make it rather difficult to operate. Take a file and knock the burr off if there is one.

>>
>>33589848
You flipped the cocking piece the wrong way. thats the back.

>>33589826
That notch on the sear shouldn't be there. Somebubba decided to make it a hair trigger. safety won't work because its like .5mm too far forward. bolt being rough would be because the spring isn't fully depressed and you have to fight it a little bit more.

You can replace it no problem, just knock the pin out of the trigger and it falls off.

Only way to save this one is to weld on a chunk of metal, or jb weld it and shape.

You could also cut a small chunk of steel off something and braze it if you know how.
>>

>just knock the pin out of the trigger and it falls off.

I have been hammering at that pin for roughly 4 hours now. I just got it to that point and it still isn't coming out. is this from cosmoline or some shit?

on a more important note what the fuck should a mauser 98 sear look like?

Could someone help me find a m1903a3 springfield stock?

If I'm reading the serial right it was made in 1930, I'm not sure what style I need, I think scant?

I also need all the fittings, buttplate, etc

I've done quite a bit of googling but I've found a big mish mash of stuff, difficult to tell what I need, an original stock would be nice if I could find it but reproduction would be okay too
>>
>>33590433
M1903A3 wasn't manufactured until 1941, you would have an M1903 with the straight-wrist stock. C-stocks or "Scant"-stocks were often installed as post-war refurbishment replacements, so either would also be correct.

Here i redid the cocking piece using the m48.

Get a picture of the receiver markings. that mauser isn't anything Yugoslavia made. They all had full length handguards.

You /might/ have one of those mix master ones they got from germany post war. In which case its up int he air.

Be careful just randomly ordering parts, the 98ks germany made and the yugo made parts don't interchange.

It's a Kar.98k receiver, used to build a Yugo copy of the Weimar-era Gew.98 with the flat tangent-leaf rear sight. That makes it a standard-length M98 action and all Kar.98k parts will interchange with it.

Yugoslavia had lots of long (740mm barrel) Mauser parts in the 1930s; mostly Gew.98s, Austrian M1914s, and Czech Vz.98/22s. They were trying to shorten all of them to M1924-length but because of the German invasion the project was never completed. The German invasion brought a bunch more Weimar-era Gew.98s into Yugoslavia along with many Kar.98k and they were both left behind once the Germans were defeated. The Yugoslavians stripped all these rifles down to their components and began re-assembling Kar.98k-style short rifles from the used parts. At some point though, they must have decided to re-use all the accumulated parts for these longer Mausers, and that's how we get >>33590270 , which has a Gew.98-length barrel, stock, and handguard, a straight bolt handle, but a receiver that clearly >>33590611 began life as a Kar.98k.

>>33590763
Those indentations are part of the M1903 rear sight base, which is a sleeve around the barrel just ahead of the receiver ring. Your rear sight base has been removed and you need to install a new one.

Well I can't help order parts. But your notch looks too deep to me. I don't know if you need a 98k or a yugo sear. I will assume german since the mod98 looks like a German receiver the Yugos refurbed.

If you want to test it find some electrical tape and layer it on the back of that sear notch and see if it pushes the sear back enough to work right.

>will I run the risk of a horrendous fuck up?
Not at all, but I think a quicker solution would be to make the ramp on the safety lever a little deeper so it can rotate in front of the cocking piece and actually retain the cocking piece. I had the same problem with my old Turk M98/37 Mauser rifle; I broke the original safety lever and when I put the replacement part in it wouldn't rotate in front of the cocking piece because the ramp was very shallow; it just turned a little bit and the bottom of the ramp hit the side of the cocking piece rather than ramping across the radius of the cocking piece's forward edge and forcing it backward.

>>
>>33587970
Grab a flashlight, open the bolt, and check in and around the chamber. I had trouble with closing the bolt on my Yugo, and it turned out that I had missed some cosmoline right where the extractor rotates. It was easy to move the bolt in and out, but rotating it was rough, doubly so when I had it loaded.

Basically take it apart and check closely for any cosmoline you may have missed.
>>
>>33593691
Because I'm on my phone. Took a picture with my phone camera and posted it. the holster does look like it could be real, couldnt say for sure without putting hands on it. from the little bits of the stock that are visible in the photo im pretty sure its a repro stock.

the originals usually are more brown than yellow and the metal bit should be more flush with the wood.

once you pay it off you can always post more pictures (best done outside on an overcast day) and it will be a lot easier to judge.

just remember that with those 90% of the ones you see will be repros and they have been making repros since the 1960s so its entirely possible to have some legit age on them at this point.
