Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 for a first shotgun purchase, /k/?
>>
>>33559573
Old production 870 or any 500 which ever one looks cooler to you.
>>
>>33559573
Remington only if it's pre 2007 otherwise mossberg 590 or ithaca if you're a hipster
>>
Remington is heavier, better for absorbing recoil of full-brass ammo. Also slightly classier looking but shitty QC and will rust.
Mossberg is lighter, cheaper and slightly more tacticool looking. Though it can also be classed-up.
Either is fine, fondle both and decide which you prefer.

ATF ruling. The "trigger" on old shotguns is the pump action in that case. Perfectly legal to own, as for making one yourself or modifying one idk because idc. Also any new production shotguns would have to have been built with a trigger disconnect per ATF regulations. Tahdah.

Last I checked the 88 only has one action bar.

OP, you might want to look for an older, used 870P or wingmaster. Both should have the metal trigger housing instead of plastic.

A cut down vent rib Wingmaster for that Romancing the Stone aesthetic.

The wingmaster has a longer forend that fucks with some sidesaddles but improves ergonomics. The 870P often has a corncob forend that looks good but is sort of awkward to reach.
>>
>>33559905
>If you go for the mossberg just save $100 and get a maverick 88, exact same gun except it has a crossbolt safety and the forend is slightly harder to replace

This, if you're looking for an 18" to 20" home defender. The 500 kit that includes an 18" and 28" barrel are good if you want to hunt and shoot burglars. Remington 870s have an alphabet letter in the serial number, If you find a good condition 870 with an A through M in the serial at a good price, buy it. N through whatever is a crapshoot for quality; some are OK, most suck.
>>
>>33559573
the 870 police magnum on the top is the hotness.
>>
Here's the tips for the Rem870 vs Mossberg500 debate.

The old Remington is better. The new ones have plastic trigger groups and generally lower quality. It's still cheap as shit to get a metal one and upgrade it anyway.

The 500 is good out of the box, but if you want a combat shotgun get the 590. Don't get the 88, the budget quality is disproportionately apparent compared to the budget price. Only pump action i've seen off face.

Get any 870 and add the heat shield. 590 comes with a heat shield.

Also, remington 870 handles contamination better, down position carrier, etc. Mossberg is lighter overall.

Red dot is fine, decent shotgun red dots are cheap too, especially if you're just starting out. But for three gun a bead or ghost sights will work just as well

You're fucking retarded. Buckshot through nearly any choke is still a fist sized group at twenty yards.

But he does kinda have a point. With a shotgun using a traditional stock an optic kinda makes the gun imbalanced. I'd honestly go for irons

Actual question boys:
if i'm mostly trying to joyshoot/learn shooting, buying my first shotgun (never even shot one before), and don't plan on killing anything bigger than whitetails, is there any problem in wanting a 20 gauge instead of a 12?

>>33561949
No.
>>
>>33561949
20's kind of pointless. It's not as big a savings on recoil as you might think, and with the variety of loads available in 12, anything a 20 can do a 12 can do better.
>>
>>33561967
That's objectively wrong, a 20 is better at being a 20, a 12 is not better at being a 20 than a 20.
>>
>>33561975
and what's a 20 better at?
>>33561967
well, a 7-pound maverick 88 shooting a 20 must have less recoil than a 7-pound 88 shooting a 12, right?
also: bruising. i despise the idea of bruising
>>
>>33561975
>Put in barrel liner
>Shoot 20 from 12
>Have even lower recoil because of mass from liner
>12 20's better than a 20
>>
>>33561987
>and what's a 20 better at?
Being a 20.

>>33561995
Requires an extra piece, 20 still better at being 20
>>
>>33561987
>well, a 7-pound maverick 88 shooting a 20 must have less recoil than a 7-pound 88 shooting a 12, right?
>also: bruising. i despise the idea of bruising

Usually 20's are lighter than their 12 gauge counterparts of the same make and model, which is why the recoil saving isn't as much as you think. You can get very light 12 gauge loads that are just as powerful as a normal load from a 20 (or even lighter than that) but, being fired from the full weight gun, they feel might lighter than the equally powered 20 gauge load.

Also, shotgun recoil is overblown. If you shoot 5 consecutive rounds of trap with a steel buttplate right on your shoulder you might get a bruise, but just put on a rubber pad and/or wear a shooter's jacket and you will never have a problem, especially with low-powered loads.
>>
I had a mossberg 500 as my first shotgun but I would get a light strike every 15 rounds or so, traded it for a new 870

You know what to do.

870 is the way to go. Break down is easy, and they're solidly build. Any model will do. Keep it oiled and it won't rust. The action on new models is not smooth, but rack that shit like a man and it will do what you want.
>>
>>33559573
If you go with the Remington make sure you get it in 12ga because the 20ga's pump-slide is way too fucking finicky to put back together.
>>
Okay OP here. Seems like both are good choices, but if I can find a pre-2007 870 I should go with that. Thank you for the suggestions.

And I guess thank you for keeping the thread up with the slam fire argument.
>>
>>33559573
mossberg 500, as an 870 owner i can tell you now, the quality is trash compared to the past version

the only quality 870s you can get are the police magnums, the others cut too many corners with trashy rivets holding in ejectors, and extractors that are MIM, with barrels not polished to be a ble to extract cheaper rounds cleanly

If you want to be able to own an 970 and bring it up to standards you will end up spending at least another $100-150 in replacement parts, and thats not including work going into doing so.

But if you can find a police magnum or an older wingmaster, then you are golden
also..blame jews for the fall of remington

I had an older Remington from 2001, the thing still rusted if it made contact with air. It was solid, had a very smooth action, and handled recoil extremely well. I would not buy a new one, find an old Wingmaster.

The modern fudd's favorite stock is now polymer with a realtree wrap. Durr won't see you coming that way
