Bought a Type 38 not too long ago and now I've been reading more and more about the Imperial Japanese Army.
They certainly had their own way of doing things and even if it wasn't the best of the war, it's still extremely interesting.

Those are called Batteries typically.

Them are some noice AA sights on that gun though.

Mind explaining? I never could understand the philosophy behind weeb weapon design.

>all those weird as fuck calibers

Were Japanese small arms any good?

Like many here I saw that Tales of the Gun episode about Japanese weapons when I was a kid so I've always thought their weapons were trash.

The early war production weapons were bretty gud

Some were good, some weren't. Their rifles were pretty great, except for the late war ones.

The Type 99 is one of the best bolt action rifles ever made. The 38 is also pretty damned good. The 30... eh it's ok.
>>

Japan modernized very late compared to other nations. Up until the late 1800s they were very isolated.
A few western gun designs made their way into Japan and it inspired their designers. Comparing Japan's technology from that time to the start of WW1, they made a huge leap ahead considering they started much later than other nations.
From the Type 13 Murata in 1880, a single shot bolt action, to the Type 30 five round in 1889. Then the Type 38 in 1906. In a little over two decades they had a rifle equivalent to the rest of the world's powers.

The fascination with bayonets was due to their emphasis on offense as well as that their soldiers were typically smaller than Westerners. An army like Japan's relied on foraging for food so that meant constant movement and offense. Keep attacking, get food, continue until you've won and can fortify.
The various calibers were something they addressed a little bit, but the introduction of the 7.7mm threw things off a bit.

That's just the Army, their Navy is an equally impressive story. Tons of inspiration from the Royal Navy and ships built by the UK until Japan learned how to do it themselves.
I've read that during WW1 and WW2 some orders aboard IJN ships were given in English (Not sure if true though).

As someone who owns both a Mauser and an Arisaka (Even though Nambu did most of the work on the 38 and 99) I can really appreciate just how simple the Japanese got the bolt design to be.
Comparing the two bolts, the Mauser's a bitch to take apart/ reassemble, meanwhile the Arisaka is just push end cap and twist.
>>
Was Japanese infantry kit any good?
>>
>>33559113
pretty standard, albeit maybe more resembling WW1 than other armies at the time, but it worked

The best planes the Japanese flew in the war
>>
>>33558287
Bayonets were on everything because bayonet drills were used for morale purposes, alongside the revival of bushido as a propaganda tool.

As for calibers, none of them are out of the ordinary. 6.5mm Jap is a typical early adoption smokeless smallbore cartridge and 7.7mm Jap is almost identical to .303 British.

As for age of designs I don't really see what you're getting at. The Type 92 is a derivative WWI design but the rest of their weapons were no more outdated than most other major combatants.

What are they? Is the Zero one?

>I've read that during WW1 and WW2 some orders aboard IJN ships were given in English
While I can't vouch for that, the IJN (begrudgingly) provided the naval protection for Britains SEA colonies throughout WWI. Because Britain stole the Australian navy.
>>
>>33559430
>the IJN (begrudgingly) provided the naval protection
The way I read it Japan was happy to because at that time they still felt honoured being in an alliance with Britain.

The refused to provide any of the Kongo-class for use in the Atlantic. Japan was happy and honored to take German possessions in the Pacific and bully China, they weren't much interested in anything else.
>>
>>33560181
They provided destroyers and such for Atlantic/Mediterranean service though. I don't believe there was much need for one or two more battlecruisers. Destroyers, on the other hand...

Britain wanted the Japanese to send all four of them. USW was serious shit and Jellicoe was still insisting convoys were a dumb idea.

5'3" here. The Type 99 is perfect for me.

I also like the Type 30 bayonet.
>>
>>33561105
AA sights actually made sense at the time the rifle was introduced. Even interwar planes could be shot down by rifle fire in battery. The Chinese did not have a great air force.

You may think it's silly, but the AA sights are not nearly as dumb as people think now.

This unconvincing transsexual actually has a nice Jap collection and website. She sets up at gun shows in western canada.

Just saying, need trumps want. Maybe they wanted some useless battlecruisers, but the 14 destroyers and 4 cruisers sent instead were more useful.

I don't remember the general that did this but one of the US generals found that 15-20% of American soldiers would actually shoot at the enemy(at their general area not actually shooting to kill). The Japanese would exploit this and could be able to get a lot of kills by running in and stabbing at the soldiers.

I don't think it would be very quick in a situation. Cool as it would be

For wartime use, Japanese paratroops having their rifle with them is a lot better than the Fallschirmjager way of "Okay I landed, now I need to find the canister that has my gun in it. Oh it's stuck in a tree. Well fuck me."
