I've always wondered what tankers do in the meantime. Do they roll with the trucks in a convoy or do they link up later?

I remember reading in a book about the Germans on the eastern front. it said they used the rails and their equipment to do engine out/track service and shit but never really quantified how they got anywhere. you'd think they'd want to stay close to their armor in a serious war so the crews don't get smoked away from the tank.
