Gonna give the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. challenge a shot this summer, but seeing as how I've never played any of the S.TA.L.K.E.R. games, I'm not entirely sure what isn't allowed (aside from the tent). What constitutes as a non-Stalker item?

Going for the easiest, most novice run I can go for, since it's my first attempt and I have no idea what i'm doing.
>>
It's simple
You either get mauled by wild animal
Or you find some trinket in the woods and have a good story to tell
Ones more likely than the other
>>
>>33546073
the challenge is only as fun as you allow it to be. you act like a bitch and take your entire kitchen you won't have fun
>>
>>33546073
go in the woods with 10 bottles of vodka a knife and one can of food
dont leave till your out of vodka
>>
>>33546302
So what do i do once im outa airplane sized vodka bottles

There's no right or wrong way to do it; stalker challenges are more about mindset than practicum. That having been said, it's usually more fun if you pack as lightly as you feel comfortable. Also go ahead and binge on creepy innawoods media: greentexts, movies, books, whatever floats your boat. An objective helps, too. For mine, I decided to hunt local marshlights said to be the restless ghost of a dead steam engineer. As long as you have fun, that's all that matters.

>>33549263
At it's most basic level, a stalker challenge is where you take your rifle and a small pack of supplies, and rough camp for anywhere from overnight to a week or longer in the creepiest place/s you can find. I did it a couple years ago on this stretch of bayou outside town that's supposed to be haunted. It was late fall, kind of wet, and cold. My loadout included a hill people gear poncho and chest harness/lumbar pack, Ishapore Enfield with 30 rounds, hatchet and morakniv, flashlight, shelter half, billy can/cup/nalgene water bottles, cordage, basic hygiene kit, fire kit, dark angel first aid kit, spare socks, and food for three days. It was a blast operating operationally through the hills and marshes, exploring abandoned mills and homesteads, and just generally being innawoods. I highly recommend it. It's become sort of a tradition with my friends by to do a stalker challenge type trip every year now.
>>
I've done every challenge, along with the originals where you had to do the acronym including killing something. Most of us are posted on https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=1253068&add=1

There are also a few discords but you would need someone to give you an updated invite to them. Novice might sound like the easiest choice, but I recommend starting with "Loner."

You should totally play them. They work fine even on modern toasters.

Consult this rookie guide. Play in release order, always on the Master difficulty, and disable cross hair.
Latest patches are all you NEED, but the "Starter Pack" mod compilations are good to have. Don't give up in the beginning, as the rookie gear sucks, and first area may appear a bit meh in general.
>>
>>33553439
Alright, thanks for the heads up.
>>
>>33550466
I have never understood why higher difficulties require LESS ammo. Hauling around full battle rattle gear, plus the camping equipment is more challenging. It's deadweight unless you can do some target shooting where you are going. Higher difficulties should require more ammo.

Its a fucking hard game anon, you can't play it like your regular shooters.

-don't try to shoot standing up, always crouch or better yet low crouch for much better accuracy

-Aim for the head, especially at the beginning of the game where all you get a shitty makarov, you NEED to aim for the head

-If they stagger don't keep shooting, as they have invincibility frames during stagger. Instead, take that time to line up a head shot

-single fire only against humans, anything goes with fuckin mutants I hate snorks goddammit
>>
>>33555510
Didn't know about invincibility frames during stagger, I've been using that time to dump ammo into the enemy. Now I can stop wasting it

>No cooking past S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
What if I make bread?
>>
>>33556420
If you don't 'cook' it, it should be fine- I.e. let it sit and finish proofing/rising, or whatever.

The idea, as I seem to understand it, higher levels seem to encourage eating rations, or dehydrated stuff- shelf stable food, or even hunting your own. When you buy/use specially made camping food, or MREs, it's not that hard. However, the cost of these tend to get high, which contrasts with the small food budget.
>>
>>33556566
I always wondered how the budget worked, not much you can get for $20. You could get some spam and vienna sausgae but that's it.
>>
>>33556615
Again, I think that's part of the challenge. I wonder, if it's from your pantry (say, a can of beans that's been there forever) and you take it as food, does it count towards your food budget if you didn't buy it specifically for the challenge?

And meant to evoke the feeling of 'I'm low on supplies' all the time, i guess.

Yes, and like the anon said earlier, Stalker is more about how you want to do it. The "rules" are more like guidelines.
>>
>>33555510
>>33555554
Not really invincibility. But Stalker, at least SoC, has a bunch of things that reduce the damage to the target. Not really sure, but it seems like you do only about 70% of damage past the first shot in automatic fire, about the same with stagger. But yes, for snorks, I usually magdump. Fuck those guys.

Holy /k/ube those digits. Also, pretty damn cool pic. Not really stalkering, but I've only recently found out that I spend my childhood in hills under which there's LOTS of pitchblende, where I was crawling through abandonded buildings, picking locks, including a watermill where the owner hung himself. Didn't find much interesting besides a rusty-ass axe and a hammer. But for a little kid, that still was a worthy loot. Got spooked bad by wierd noises and wierder dreams that night and went to return the tools back to the building.

Also, when I entered high school, few months in there was some sort of promotional thing for nuclear energy. So being a good little lad grown up on fallouts, I sat in the first line and paid attention. And being a dumb little shit, they handed out two rocks to be passed around. One pale and somewhat lighter, other black, almost glossy and heavy. For some fucking reason I decided to bite onto the black one just as they were telling us it's uranium ore. Kek. Then they brought out a geiger-counter and scanned the kids. It was calibrated for pretty low scale I'm sure, but for the other kids, it went "spark...spa-spark..spark?" and when they came to me it blew off the chart. Kek. Good times.

Not sure, really. The stuff is all over this highland region. I think there used to be two or three uranium mines a half-hour drive away from where I live. Damn gov't sold it to soviets way back when for dirt cheap, though, most likely through political pressure.

nah, Streilock is a namefag/tripfag who got drunk and ate a depleted uranium bullet.

Also in retrospect (after binging through the rare geology of uranium and other radioactive elements) I've apparently chewed on uranite crystals that were part of my granddad's rock collection.....ok that makes two different anons (three if we count streilock) that have tried to eat radioactive rocks.... there's gotta be a common factor among /k/ it seems...Granted that was more me being a little dipshit and fucking around with the rocks in the collection than actively knowing it was radioactive at the time.
>>
>>33576374
Ah, thanks for the enlightement. Kek. But nah, I feel it's instinctive. I don't (and didn't before) chew on rocks on a regular basis. We are drawn to the radioactive, mysterious and stupid things! Hue.

Anyway, what do you guys bring innawoods for the stalker challenges as far as supplies go? Not really for stalker challenges specificaly, but I've recently found out I prefer blankets to sleeping bags for outdoorsy sleeping. Used to bring a sheepskin with me as well. Shit's bulky as fuck, but when my gear got pretty damn drenched during a storm, I tried to get as much water from my sleeping as possible and laid down and it really does wonders - it starts to be warm after a few minutes. Never would've thought I'd have a good night's sleep in a drenched sleeping kit.
