Act of Valor: I saw a trailer for this before it came out. Didn't hear much about it since. Decide to finally watch it. Expectations low. Holy hell. This movie is intense and maybe the most /k/ movie I've ever seen. Some of the acting during the talky part is cringe tier (the Seals are played by actual active duty Seals), but the fighting parts are top notch. They got chinooks dropping SWCC gunboats in rivers. C130s dropping a couple boats and seal teams in the middle of the ocean where they get picked up by a submarine then deploy a small submarine to infiltrate the African coast undetected. It's awesome. Why doesn't /k/ ever talk about Act of Fucking Valor? Also movie thread I guess.

Because I've already got a ton of movies on the backlog, waiting for the hurt locker to arrive so I can watch it, hacksaw ridge is after that and then Sicario when I can get it.

I was super disappointed in Act of Valor desu. I'd read the book beforehand and loved it, but the movie was just lacking in the emotional depth the book had

I would recommend the following:

homeland (not a movie but a tv show). I think homeland portrays a more realistic version of war and how intelligence is all that matters.
saving private ryan
black hawk down
hurt locker
letters from iwo jima
flags of our fathers
>>
>>33545630
Good actors would have made the dialogue parts better but using actual seals instead made the action much better IMO.
>>
>>33545674
that's interesting. i never knew that they were actual navy seals.

Hacksaw Ridge is another WW2 movie worth recommending. Black Hawk Down's breddy good if you want to watch Delta Force cucking Army Rangers. Hurt Locker's pretty meh. Lone Survivor sucks, American Sniper's not much better. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is the best modern day war movie tbqh desu.

I thought the writing, aside from a few of del toro's bits, was super solid. They're making a sequel that's even more focused on del toro's character, but I get the impression that it's going to be try hard garbage... We'll see.
>>
>>33545987
Good fucking movie. The first Battlefield Bad Company game follows a similar plot, but a little dumber. It's really good. They should've carried more of the openess of the maps over to BC2, but BC2's multiplayer was generally better.

For movies: I really liked Hamburger Hill as a kid, but I haven't seen it in... 15 - 20 years?

The whole Medellin part was very stupid. The cop asks "Medellin?" to Del Toro when he's abducting him, and for some reason Kate thinks that proves he working for Colombian cartels. Then Josh Brolin is like Colombian cartels are more controllable, and Del Toro works for whoever will let him kill the dude who killed his family, but we know and even she knows
He's working for the CIA
. Doesn't make any sense.

Anyway is End of Watch any good?
>>
>>33548703

Act of Valor has a plot line and acting on par with porn, stringing shit along until you get to the good part.

End of Watch is about two steps above that.

This is the minefield one, yeah? People should note this is less of a war movie and more of a psychological piece looking at the stress of combat. Sorta.

Different anon here:
I thought it was a nice change of pace from the usual 'everyone is a superhuman bassass' affair in movies. She was also a nice presentation of the lawful archetype. I do believe the movie takes her side for the most part, but isn't afraid to show that being right or just doesn't mean life will be easy for you and that others will take advantage of you if you let your sense of right or wrong misguide you. It felt grounded until the super quiet knife that kills on a single touch and not a five-ten minute struggle as the guy bleeds out, but it was just a quick ten second scene to be fair. Del Toro's super agent antics were also a bit much, but I liked his character for the most part.
>>
>>33551730
Different anon here, but you both make great points. While I too certainly found Kate as a major fucking annoyance, I also feel like part of my hatred comes from when I had to take part in a cancerous class discussion of it for a bs college class and everyone praised her as a hero.

>they said she was in ROTC in college and did a tour in Iraq, so she's a good pick for the job. She's a badass!!
ROTC is hardly special training wise (t. ROTCfag) and she probably only did a single tour as a 2nd LT in mil intelligence getting coffee for the majors in hq.
>omg she was so brave in the beginning dodging that shotgun blast and killing guy
She fucking tripped and then shot him, get that bs out of here
>she fought for why she believed in after the tunnel fight
She physically attacked fucking Delta Forces personnel in a goddamn combat zone! She's more of a liability than anything!
>>
>>33551678
Seeing her be pathetic was good because she's a Liberal cunt getting owned by real world issues that a vagina and feelings don't protect against. It's pretty based in that regard, since I don't think I'm supposed to like her.

Julio is the protagonist in my eyes.
>>
>>33551867
While I agree with your first two points I think the third is unfair. She is a uniformed police officer that was deceived into permitting an illegal operation of soldiers playing cops on American soil and what amounts to an invasion of a friendly nation. Best case scenario if she and the others ever get caught will be life in prison. Which is an upgrade from the traditional best case which was being able to wear your uniform when you stood before the firing squad. That wasn't her being a liability in a combat zone (there isn't even suppose to be one in the first place), but her lashing out in rage against a criminal that tricked her into being complicit in his crimes.
>>

>Shows conflict between a kid who was supposed to sit behind a typewriter and now a kid who needs to gun people down

>>33551405
I thought the characters were pretty cool. I liked their uniforms and equipment the most though

I thought he wasn't as typecasted as he usually was. I mean there were some pretty distinctive scenes of him showing his other side when they weren't in combat where he obviously tried to comfort the kid who is obviously brighter and softer than the other crew members.

What do you mean unrealistic battle scenes? Like I'm not a huge tread guy so I don't really know how a armoured battle would go down.

I only remember the anti-tank child soldiers though.
>>
>>33551436

>>
>>33544599
this
>>
>>33552057
>What do you mean unrealistic battle scenes?
I think he is talking about the fight between the Shermans and the Tiger. At the range shown every tank involved could penetrate each other. The 75mm Shermans a bit less so, but they still could have gotten a disabling shot fairly easily if not a kill. The 76mm Sherman and (obviously) the Tiger could have killed each other very easily at that range. The tanks charging at each other didn't make sense realism-wise even if it was obviously an attempt at drama.

The battle versus the SS was both grounded in realism and weirdly unrealistic. The SS had some really awful units. Soldiers high on fanaticism with zero training and retard-tier tactics, but the ones in the movie are decently equipped and appear to have proper training. They should have been able to kill a single immobile tank fairly easy even if they took heavy losses in the opening engagement. I guess the director couldn't resist showing Nazis marching in step even if it messes with the idea of them being no better than a random militia.
>>
>>33552124
True. But isn't slightly based on Audie Murphy?

Thanks for the info, I always thought that Shermans were shit no matter where they were in comparison with Tigers
>>
best miniseries-Band of Brothers, Generation kill, the Pacific

Best Movies- 13 hours, Black Hawk Down, Hacksaw Ridge, letters from iwo jima, Saving Private Ryan, Full metal Jacket, A bridge too Far, Where Eagles dare

>>33551867
Movie was good but yeah in reality I feel the chick was more as an annoyance, was more there for the kinda reality check for audiences but just generally pissed me off
>>
>>33552268
The Sherman being shit is a myth. It wasn't prefect by any measure, but no tank in that war was. The 76 mm Sherman wasn't even that much better at tank killing than the 75 mm, but it was still a very important upgrade vs the Panther.
>>
>>33551867
I thought that was the point of the character. She is way out of her depth, stressed out of her mind. She didnt have the training to deal with the situation. Perhaps I overthought it though.

but the tank charge thing is what they were actually taught to do if caught out in the open against a Tiger... although you're right about it not being necessary at that range. The tactic they used was meant for much longer ranges.

Whiplash was a hard watch for me. I had just left a kitchen that was ran in a similar fashion. Perfection or fuck off. It really hit me. Working nights where I can't see or cook for my family, no weekends.

Women can't relate because men are defined by their jobs. It's not unusal for a woman to only work part time so she can raise her kids. Most of the women I know are planning for that. As men, that option is not available. We work untill we break our backs.
