Officer boots were riding boots, Narrow fit for riding pants.

Other rank high boot were jackboot. Like the riding boot they have strap to be pulled up with near the shaft top. Bootstraps. These boot were not flat under, but had iron studs and iron heel and tip edges. They did NOT have rubber soles.

The boots you see pics of are modern boots, or at least postwar.

That's just the fashion of the period. Starting a lot earlier than ww2. Pants had been held up by elastics or similar shoulder straps they were invented, because pants were made to be big enough - not to fit. The available materials didn't allow for stretch or even normal movement unlike they were hoisted up somehow. I don't think 'sizes' was a thing in stores until the industrial revolution. In short, everyone's pants were hanging up there so movement should not rip them straight off your ass. With fabrics like denim pants belts finally started to make sense because the pants could be tight enough that a belt was sufficient. Which is why all the ww2 soldiers I can think of had elastics to hold up their uniform pants.

Academic fencing was popular up into the 1920s m8. A college-aged kid in the 1920s fresh out of a military academy or whatever would be reaching the equivalent of like O-5/O-6 by the 1940s, ie basically everyone in charge of a sizeable command like a prison camp or something.

To add to this, back then the military wasn't something you did as a temporary thing if you were an officer. An officer in a European military was basically in there for life, it was an indefinite career choice.

I am familiar with mensur scars. But Germany right out of WW1 was not exactly offering military career options. While we do know of German officers of WW2 with such adornments I find it difficult to believe they were anywhere near as common as in WW1. Same with the monocle thing, really. They are cliches.

I read an old manual claiming that suspenders are more comfortable, but less practical. Pants would be rather loose, but not extremely so.
(Also, manufacture was never a factor; pants would be produced in a variety of sizes and fitted when necessary. Making different sizes is actually equally possible without industrial production if you think about it...)

The trouble with suspenders was that they were only barely elastic until they were made of rubber. With a shortage in rubber they were made of less good substitutes. Even leather for belts became an issue so they made them too out of fabric eventually.

Career, middle-aged military men - very well. That they were lardasses while at the same time having field duty I find harder to believe. But there is a difference between higher ups and the field officers of course.

I never read of it being common among military and I honestly doubt they would have liked to be thrown in with the civilian and mostly non-noble students.
Of course, some of these students did later become officers what with the war and all, but it being a military thing might be the association of duelling and the military, when the scars especially were the product of a very specific and ritualized "duel" that was not common among the military.
