It wasn't operator error, it's the lack of factory locking differentials and 31" tires that don't clear the fenders because Jeeps can't generally hack it.

Fair point. Though, truth be told, there is one off road car that is absolutely worth its money, but because of reasons you listed it's not available in US. I'm talking about J70 Land Cruiser (no, not the one in the picture - though that one is awesome). Whatever is sold in US is crap.

God early XJ and MJ suck but holy fucking shit are they aesthetic as hell.

Where are you keeping it? Did you bother to get a vandal-proof lockbox?

I'd be concerned about a small fuel tank, but apparently there are aftermarket expansion tanks, some of them integrated with the fuel system to the point you don't need to do anything beyond pouring fuel into them to operate.

None yet, just gonna do a slip yoke eliminator, snorkel, front True Trac (rear is already limited slip) winch and some tool storage on the body panels. Warn bumpers with recovery hooks. Might paint it a more subdued color someday, nothing tacky thoigh. Keeping it simple.
>>
>>33543097
Get a D44 for the rear and truss the D30. Then put TTs in both. Don't put a locking diff in the front axle if you can only have one, just put it in the rear. Thanks to the brake force distribution you can pretty effectively balance power on the front axle using the brakes.

Okay so I know it's ghetto as fuck, but I had an old truck I bought from a buddy to work on a home renovation. It was that champagne color every 2000ish Chevrolet was painted.

Plastidipped the whole thing with rattle cans in the driveway. Turned out pretty nice, was totally reversible and you can touch it up if you ding it. And they make it in pretty cool Jeep colors like od green.

God damn I sound like a plastidip shill. Anyway it's neat stuff and I would think it'd work nicely on a Wrangler like that if you want not-cherry red.
>>
>>33543126
I hope it's not a 3rd gen.
>>
>>33543132
I should note I didn't do it just bc it was gold. Clear was letting go, rust all over (which I converted then painted over to buy some time) and I did it just to sell it. Figured some kid would love it. He did.
>>
>>33543119
Mine came with a rear D44 from the factory. I agree about the locker, the True Trac is just a high bias ratio limited slip, and so far I've never found myself needing a locker. Probably should truss the front axle. I've been pretty impressed with this thing so far, it's never left me hanging yet.
>>
>>33543132
That doesn't look too bad. I think it's a great coating for an older rig you just don't want to repaint. The paint on mine is just in such good shape I don't want to go with anything except another nice paint color. The red has kinda grown on me though
>>
>>33543180
Well like I said that's part of the appeal; you can just yank it off if you decide you don't want it anymore/sell/new color or whatever.

But yeah man, the red isnt bad.

Ah ok, I was confusing it with the G80 which I thought they marketed as the TrueTrac.
>Probably should truss the front axle.
You definitely should if you want to run larger than 31" tires and don't baby the car.

How many canes did it take? Where did you get the plastidip? Did it have a rubbery texture? I looked on the website and it lists several different lines do you know their differences? Like if I did it I'd want like FDE or coyote, I'd settle for OD. I need to do my trim at the very least.
>>
>>33543214

But I kept it just for that project then sold it.

Kill your self
>>
>>33543233
I used probably a dozen cans. It was a little rubbery but you could layer it more to get a rubbier finish if you want. I did probably 3 coats.

You can order it from anywhere; amazon, hardware store... Auto parts places stock the fun colors usually if you run low.

It was just the normal bog standard black plastidip. I think it turned out nice.

It was cheaper than all the 1990's jeeps, 2000+ pickups/suvs, etc. that I had seen. The only thing that will suck to buy is the tires. Other than that, preventative maintenance has been easy and cheap. Replaced 5 filters and changed all 5 gallons of oil. Eventually I will be getting a reusable air filter and tires. Maintenance/technical documents are available on every single part, piece, assembly, etc. so nothing is a mystery.
>>
>>33542662
>import
Are you insane? What will one do with J70 where there are no fucking spare parts? Remember, we're talking about SHTF here. Jeeps are like Lego blocks - parts are scavengeable, interchangeable and plenty. Less so with Tacomas and other stuff. Even J200 is way too expensive ($85k new) to consider it viable for SHTF, except, maybe, as a disposable box to just leave where (not if) it breaks.
>>
>>33542789
What do tires and the locker have to do with the fact that he simply miscalculated the approach angle?

Lockers are incredibly important. But it doesn't change the fact that a solid axle will articulate more. Also they are mechanically simpler and far more durable.

I used to wheel a IFS Nissan for years, but got sick of breaking half-axles and CV joints failing. Thanks, but I've already done the IFS thing, and I didn't like it one bit.
>>
>>33544556
>But it doesn't change the fact that a solid axle will articulate more.
From the factory? Barely, if at all.
>Also they are mechanically simpler and far more durable.
Mechanically simpler? They're both a differential, half shafts, CVs, and control arms. They're not any more durable, either.
>I used to wheel a IFS Nissan for years, but got sick of breaking half-axles and CV joints failing. Thanks, but I've already done the IFS thing, and I didn't like it one bit.
I don't know what Nissan you wheeled. A solid axle of the same strength would have failed as well.

>From the factory? Barely, if at all.
They usually do though. And they have MUCH more potential if you lift them than a IFS truck will ever have. The upper and lower control arms will limit how far a IFS truck can go before the swing arm or leaf spring of a solid axle truck will.

>Mechanically simpler?
Yes.
>They're both a differential, half shafts, CVs, and control arms.
So? The angle the of the solid front axle truck halfshalfs will never change. Extreme angles are what fucks a CV joint up, that or sand getting in the boot (also no SFA does not have CVs). A solid axle is one solid contiguous piece of steel where everything is housed inside of, the IFS setup spreads things out more
>They're not any more durable, either.
They are. You just saying this matter of factly will not change reality.

>I don't know what Nissan you wheeled.
And Xterra, it did rather well but the R180 alloy housing for the front diff cracked under stress. You can 'titan swap' them and put the Nissan titatns M205 diff in, but it's $3k and barely nets you any strength gain.
>A solid axle of the same strength would have failed as well.
That' the thing, no solid front axle is made out of aluminum alloy to save weight like the IFS ones will be. IFS is just a compromise when it comes to offroading

With a SFA I can run larger tires at higher stress (more wheel speed, more load, etc.) and be confident that I won't get stranded out on the trail somewhere. Again, thanks for your "input" but I've been there and done that when it comes to IFS.
