Well, /k/? Make your case.
>>
>>33535472
Fun: lever

distance: bolt
>>
Nothing handles quite like Winchester 94 carbine.
>>
>>33535472
Henry did it best
>>
>>33535472
Lever action for speed and aesthetic. Bolt for distance and big bore.
>>
>>33535472
I want to say levers, but there are only 2 manufacturers producing rotating bolt designs for high velocity cartridges and I'm never going to take a follow up shot on a running deer.
>>
>>33535472
They both hold a special place in my heart
>>
Rolling block
>>
>>33538533
my nubian companion
>>
>>33535472
I like both and I own multiple examples of both.

Case closed.
>>
>>33536444
You don't think a 45-70 can drop a deer in one shot?
>>
>>33539063
>And the crowd cheers
Order in the court!
Order in the court!
>>
>>33535614
Yeah, for a whole 6 years until the release of the Winchester 1866.

>>33535472
I will preface it with that I'm not an American, so I don't have emotional attachment to leverguns.

Lever action has dual advantage over bolt gun:
>larping
>speed

First is pretty self explanatory.

As for the speed, if people really cared that much about it in a repeater, in theory it would meant that there should be market for .30-30 and .45-70 pump-action rifles. But in reality this is one of rarest type of long guns.

So my conclusion is that lever action gun is first a LARP gun and second practical.
>>
>>33539080
I have actually hit a deer with a 45-70 and ended up having to follow a blood trail.
I fired in a panic and failed to hit it's breast.
>>
>>33539184

What is larping?

Depends. Are you out west, hunting mule deer and elk in the mountains, or in thick brush on the east coat chasing whitetail.

A lever action is far superior in thick brush, but if you need to take a shot at 100, 200, 500 yards; get a bolt action.

>inb4 no such thing as a brushgun
watch this video if you think lever actions are not objectively better in thick brush.

Levergats. They're faster and you can get them in full sized rifle calibers. Models that don't have tube magazines like >>33539163's custom lever nugget or the savage 99's internal rotary magazine allows them to be loaded with full size spitzer bullets. Bolt action does have the advantage for prone shooting though. And full sized lever rifles tend to be expensive.

But all it really comes down to is personal preference. Which appeals to you more, which action is more comfortable for you, etc etc.

Don't just take my word for it listen to papa hickock

what about a lever with modern catridges? BLR in .308? for instance?
>>
>>33535472
>faggy treestand-feeder long distance hunting
bolt
>fun, based bush hunting
lever.
>>
>>33542431
Id rather push bush then freeze my ass off innatree any day.

Gets hella cold in Alberta come November.
>>
>>33542277
Winchester 1895 is the best example. Even though the round ain't modern it would basically be the same thing
>>
>>33535472
>Medium range to almost long range
Lever
>Long range to VERY long range
Bolt

oyea. forgot about those. I get buck fever bad thanks
>>
>>33538533
Is a Martini-Henry a rolling block or a lever gun?
>>
Fore me personally? I prefer bolts. They're simple, reliable, an you can load them with some pretty hot stuff without even straining them.
>>
>>33539394
>custom lever nugget
Are you autistic?
>>
>>33544777
Lever
>>
>>33539080
Sure it will. My point was that a lever offers quick follow up shots usually at the expense of limited cartridge choice, and I don't need follow up shots in a hunting rifle.
>>
>>33544721
What caliber? Longer range stuff like a BLR or HLR make sense. Just make sure you've got enough clearance for the lever.
>>
is it just me or do lever guns just point more naturally and rest in your palms easier?
>>
>>33545528
It's likely because the center of mass is more rearward on a lever. Bolt action carbines feel similar.
>>
Bolt action because I'm a bench shooter and a sniperboo.
>>
usually I prefer lever but its impossible to beat a really, really good bolt. my No 4 Enfield is my favorite wordly possession and I believe I may love it more than extended members of my own family.
>>
>>33535472
In favor of bolt:
>simple
>cheap
>more rugged overall
>more common
>generally chambered in cheaper/more common cartridges
>can take disgustingly hot loads
>bayonet lugs
>won the contest for long-term global military use for a reason
In favor of lever:
>faster, if correctly maintained
>don't have to change sight picture when chambering new round (some boltguns can do this too, but it's uncommon)
>also don't have to change your hold to chamber new round
>easier to use while mounted
>frequently share ammo with revolvers
>pretty as fuck
>cowboy action shooting
>won the west, also for a reason
There's also a lot of personal preferences involved here.
>>
>>33540883
Or too old.
>>
>>33546482
>Implying I can't unleash AN UNSPEAKABLE LOAD on my repeater.
>>
Lever action is inherently ambidextrous.
Bolt action can be made to take box mags.
>>
>>33539163
>>33539394
That's not a "lever nugget". That's a Winchester 1895.
>>
>>33535472
I prefer bolt guns.

Generally more powerful ammunition, and easier to disassemble and clean.
>>
>>33535614
>henry
>best
not even in the group photo.
>>
>>33535472

Lever action. It's marginally faster, can be operated with one hand if need be, feels smooth as shit, and makes me feel like a cowboy.
>>
>>
>>
Depends

Do you need a CAR or a DMR?

Under 200 yards and lever wins

Over 200 yards is when the bolt action shines

Of course, M1895 bridged the gap, but "muh 1000 yard rifle shootouts" of the early 1900s

bolt is objectively better overall

But levers handle really well, are nice to carry and are fast for follow up shots. So if range and accuracy arent a factor then levers can become a better option than a bolt.
>>
I hate having to take my hand up to the bolt. I prefer lever because of this. But bolt is better in other ways.

What's the best lever gun caliber for durr hunting?
>>
>>33542277
Lever action isn't quite as sturdy as the bolt action and can't feed from a vertical magazine.

It's still powerful as all hell but a bolt action can handle higher pressures than a lever.
>>
>>33545552
The old WW2 bolt actions tended to be hilariously overpowered for their job.

Take the K bullet, for example. The Mauser was so sturdy that you could use it as a discount anti-tank gun.
>>
>>33551043
*WW1, sorry
>>
>>33551002
At what range? Under 200 yards you cant fobwrong with good ol 30-30. Over that im at a loss since I'm not a big lever guy
>>
>>33551144
