for anyone that cares, go to home despot and get yourself a 3m full face respirator. the activated charcoal in a 40+ year old milsurp mask has long since gone inert.

OP, nice collection!

Original C2 (black one on left, green one is newer C2A1). The type that people warn of chromium toxicity. I have two that are unissued, so they should be fine to have around, but not use.

>>33532567
I actually have a 3m 7800s, it's a really nice mask, but a littlle on the uncomfier side. And thanks!
>>
>>33532567
whew didnt expect to see the 3m shill this early in the tread
> the activated charcoal in a 40+ year old milsurp mask
as long as the mask seals you're fine, just get a new filter, or use adapters that let you use the same 3m filters on 40mm military masks.

As for price, a new MSA millennium is cheaper on ebay than a new 3m full face respirator. Also you are not able to drink in 3m respirators as they lack a drinking tube. If you plan on doing any /k/ activities in a mask you are going to want to drink so you dont become a heat casualty.

I've considered getting a millenium myself, but I'm concerned about it's level of comfort, as it's based off the US Navy's MCU-2/P series (which is made of grey silicone rather than the superior black hycar like the millenium), which were notorious for thier super uncomfortable nosecups.

Unless you have a really low profile nose, I'd vouch for an FM-12 or S-10. Both are super comfy and durable, but their main drawback is you need british canteen adapters.

Neat, I've got three. One still sealed in the can.
>>
>>33532638
My MSA has a bit of a deformation on the nose cup, but it is still pretty comfy. It leaves an odd shaped line on my nose, but that is it.

Ive worn it for 3 hours on end with no trouble with the nosecup specifically being uncomfortable. Ive never worn a MCU so I cant make a comparison, overall though I think my fr-m40 is a lot more comfy
>>
I have a plain ol' GP5. It was a gift and I don't know too much about it. I'm thinking about getting more, especially a functional one.

couldn't seal in those things to save my damn life. My large M40A2 seals much better and I'd probably be better with a medium one desu

Optical inserts. I've considered getting a set for some of my masks, but the cost to get them prescription fitted would be totally aids

tanker masks are pretty hot
shame they always made 'em so cheaply like most cvc stuff
it's also interesting that they used the older wwii M10A1 filters with all american tank crew masks until the M42 series was introduced
>>
>>33532823
Worst thing about that one is that it has been in its bag since Nam was over. It is deformed as fuck, and the filter scares the hell out of me. I think it has to do with the degradation of the rubber, but it is the softest and most comfy mask I've stuck my face in.

>>33532848
It seems all tanker masks were like that. They might've been using a softer (possibly cheaper) blend of rubber in the tank masks. In addition to an M25A1, I have an original M14A1 (which replaced the short-lived M14, made of white M9A1 rubber). It's much thicker rubber than the M25 series, but just as soft.

The lack of anything touching your face except the smooth seal makes me feel like I'm motorboating angel titties. Easily my comfiest mask and on the rarer side of my collection, too.
>>
>>33532883
the biggest pain in the ass wearing it is that from sitting for a good 40 years, the hose is jam packed with dust and shit that gets sucked into my eyes. Amazing rubber quality though.
>>
>>33532922
Since the filter's removed, you could probably run some water through the hose carefully, while holding the facepiece upside-down so it simply runs out the top of the mask.
>>
>>33532946
I've thought about it, but if I'm doing some larping around the house, I'll probably be doing it in the MCU anyway. I bought the M14 because it was a damn good deal for what it was at my local milsurp store. Got to love some folks like that, they know what they have in stock, but they know that a willing customer is worth way more than waiting for a guy to fuck over.

As long as you get a 40mm mask in good condition you can just put new NBC or industrial filters on it.
But yeah industrial masks are a good choice.

Industrial masks are good if you need a mask with a high level of durability. Otherwise, getting a military surplus mask is probably a better option. Industrial/Commercial Law Enforcement masks typically lack drinking devices and don't always have the same degree of comfort as their military counterparts, which are designed to sustain the wearer through hours of combat in a contained environment, whereas industrial masks would be used for tasks that require lower levels of exercise for shorter periods of time in heavier contaminated environments.

If you don't mind sacrificing hydration for the ability to easier maintain the mask (as most commercial masks are able to becompletely disassembled), Industrial masks are more than adaquate for entering contaminated environments, but not as much for extended combat.

This is the way I'll arrange importance of features in a protective mask:

Level 1: Mandatory Features:
- Inlet/Outlet Valves
- Tissot Airflow Deflector System
- Adjustable Harness or Differently Sized Faceblanks
- Replacable Filters that can be Readily Bought
- Faceblank Made of durable Rubber
- Glass or Plastic Eyelens(es)

Level 2: Additional Neccessary Comforts:
- Inner Oronasal Cup
- Drinking Device
- In-turned Periphery Face Seal
- Faceblank Made of Butyl, Hycar, EPDM, or Plastic with Rubber Face Seal
- Butyl Hood or 'Second Skin' to cover Faceblanks made of Silicone
- 40mm Filter Threads ('Porkchop', Bayonet, and Fixed filters are dead and/or hard to acquire filters compared to 40mm!)
- Replacable Parts and/or Ability to Disassemble
- Convenient Method of Carrying
- Durable and Comfortable Construction

Level 3: Accessorize!:
- Compatable with Voice Projection Unit/Communications Equipment
- Ballistic/Insulative Eyelens Outserts
- Mesh Skullcap or Quick-Don Harness for Comfort and Rapid Protection
- Rubber Hood Design or Rubber Head Harness for Durability and Easy Decontamination
- Ability to Adapt to Blower Filter/SCBA/Rebreather Setups
- Intimidating Design - this has always been a factor in gas mask designing, even today

How can you determine fit and proper sizing?

Are there masks with good visibility, reversible filter location, and drinking tubes? If so how do they stack up to each other?
>>
>>33533957
Russian masks are easy to derermine size, since online listings give you a measurement chart to base your choice of size off of. American sizes are a bit more of an acquired thing you get to know over time.

Panoramic masks typically have good visibility and most modern masks have the ability to switch out the position of the filter. Drinking tubes are always placed on one side only and cannot be reversed. The only mask I know with reversible drinking tubes were a small handful of Russian MB-1-80 (PMK-2) experimental variants with a drinking tube placed in the port opposite of the filter and could be swiitched out..
>>
>>33533241
Problem with some of the newer military visor type masks is that they're a bit shit for use with sights and scopes, or at least the Scott GSR is.
My older S10 and CT12 are much better for actually getting a sight picture.
