why did Chigurh use a silenced shotgun instead of a pistol? i know it's a movie, but i ask this to see if there's any justification for such a setup ever as it was fairly badass.

None really. It does make for an interesting 'signature' weapon, they weren't going for realism with much of the gunplay.

Lower pressure means less noise potentially. Higher chance of a one hit stop.

Because it looks unique and intimidating. When you think of suppressed shotguns you think of Chigurh, and that's what matters to hollywood.

assuming NCfOM was real, a shotgun is a solid choice for versatility, lethality, difficulty of ballistics matching a smoothbore, intimidation, and ease of logistics (finding ammunition, two hands on a weapon, it's not depending on external magazines, et c).

In the book at one point he mentions he liked it because he can choose different loads for different things. When he shoots the bloke in front of the window in a highrise building he mentions he chose like no.6 shot so the bullet didn't go through the target and break the window behind him, but would still kill the bloke at such short range.
Was a while ago I read it though. I figured it was just because it looks unique

I assumed for it's lethality. Handgun rounds are weak and people tend to fight back until they are dead. A shotgun puts you down hard and fast and you aren't shooting back, in most cases. But he had other guns if you recall.

Lower pressure? Basic shot shells are like magnum pistol cartridges

Set in 1980 so it wasn't like today where everyone and their mom has an AR so the long gun of choice would be a shotgun.

He isn't wrong, chamber pressure is not the same as kinetic energy.

The low pressure is vastly outran by the gas volume and xbox hueg bore diameter. But technically correct.

Even a .22lr has a higher chamber pressure than a 12 gauge.
