Just finished making a bad decision.

Purchased this Browning Auto-5 on Gunbroker for $300. I am going to refinish it top to bottom, and maybe even add some engraving.

What'd you buy today /k/ommando?

It's a little rough, but I'll probably shoot it for a long time first.

I'm a watchmaker by trade, so I'm thinking I need to do some custom engraving someday. Almost wish I bought the unengraved, or a receiver in white.

Feels kinda bad to cut into a decent shotty.

It's 1950 belgian, but with the old style safety and no speedload.

I got the Auto-5 especially for clays!

It's not light weight, and it's not great with smaller loads, but I can aim like a Motherfuker over that flat receiver.

I recently started using 7/8oz with a relaxed powder load because it keeps my spread a little more uniform. I'm going to have it threaded for screw-in chokes eventually

How do you choke that thing for clays?

Horology (study of timepieces) is a rewarding thing to do. The big downfall is that you cant ever afford to purchase the super high end models you work on.

I have rolex, omega, and a bevy of vintage watches. But I'm never going to have the fuck-you money to get a Automaton from ulysse nardin.

With the loss of oldtimers, and resurgence of mechanical watch sales, I'm safely employed.

Ok well your picture is a PPK and your post text says "S&W PPK/s" so I guess it's the latter. I was confused by your unrelated picture.

No, $400 isn't a great price for a PPK/s. They're very plentiful and not great quality, but do have some improvements over the PPK. The PPK rather than the PPK/s gets some bonus bux points because muh bond gun but the S&W ones tend to be equally poor.

tl;dr I'd pass. American PPK/s isn't interesting enough to pay $400 for.

The idea is buy the real deal when I find it, the resale on a PPK/S is an easy $400 any day because retards, gamers, and fudds alike drive up the price and demand on these things.

90% of those fags can't tell the difference between a PPK and a PPK/S and the PP series has skyrocketed in price because of "muh bond" like you said. Basically, I can get my money back in any given week when its time to get the real deal.

If you want to be your own boss, it's a good trade to work with. You can repair, service, or refurbish for resale.

>>
>>33526019
A bit of both, but it truly is the best bearing surface for the application.
>>
>>33525563
>Auto-5 for $300? That seems cheap as hell

Very cheap. It should have cost nearly 500.

I can get an unengraved model with 80% for 350-400.

I can get a level 1 engraved with 80% for 500-600

A Level 2 engraved 80% for 600-800

These prices are for a post-war belgian 12ga. (without speedload, old style safety)

The one OP purchased has 50% and then some areas of total wear through, but with decent furniture (non refinished), and level 2 engraving. This puts it about $450.

Doesn't matter the number produced tripfag... demand more than makes up for it. Any Auto-5 on gunbroker with the above prices are selling, not just getting relisted.
>>
>>33526076
How do the prices change if I want speedload? I always thought that feature was fantastically delightful on an Auto-5.
>>
>>33526019
>Why always rubies

I've seen blue sapphire and white sapphire also.
Synthetic ruby is dirt cheap material, and its a great friction bearing surface for very small, very fast pivots.

>How do the prices change if I want speedload

quickload/speedload are on newer models that tend to be in better than average condition. Unless the seller is particularly knowledgeable, the speed load ITSELF has little bearing on the price. They just go hand in hand.

You can always orger the part from browning for about 100 bucks and replace it yourself. I'm pretty intent on doing that eventually.

You can even replace the trigger guard/trigger/safety, but thats a step too far imho.

>>
>>33526189
>Always jewels though.

Usually, yes. There used to be brass bushings on exceptionally low quality watches, the wear and accuracy is terrible for the most part.

Some of the bigger pocket watches went with brass for a long time, because the force of friction is so much lower with the large diameter pivots.

I expect that the next big leap in mechanical watches will center on materials. They have made silicon balance wheels for a long time.

The last major advance was the co-axial escapement by Daniels (featured in select Omega wristwatches) in around 1974. Before that, the tourbillon in around 1795.

Any material that fights friction is going to be important. Watch oils cost about $30 for 2ml for the stuff that rolex specs.

In a new Rolex oyster perpetual, I'm using about 5 different oils I think

Be careful, if that's your rifle it's NOT an 1896/11, it appears to be an 1889. Don't go shooting GP11 out of an 1889 if you enjoy having a face.

...or do it. I mean, having a Swiss straight-pull kill you is a damn classy way to go
>>
>>33526491
Not him but friction is very important on how things move in a watch so the oils used are similarly calibrated to the specific part and has to be able to still work exactly the same for x amount of years and probably with wiggle room in case people forget to service thier watches.
>>
>>33526491

The 1889 is a semi-smokeless/early smokeless design with rear locking lugs. The 1896/11, G11, and K11 have a strengthened receiver and redesigned bolt built for proper smokeless powder with mid-bolt (for lack of a better term) lugs.

The 1889's were designed for GP90, which is the earlier cartridge. GP11 has slightly different dimensions but will chamber and fire in an 1889. GP11 is MUCH hotter in terms of bolt thrust than GP90, and is hazardous in such a rifle.

Hello fellow helvetiboo.
>I saw a 96/11 in a dream once
>>
>>33526665
>so the oils used are similarly calibrated to the specific part

absolutely right. There is a mainspring that is just coiled steel that contains the energy of the whole mechanism, gets a light grease usually. The rotor is a weight that spins while you move your wrist to wind the spring, the clutch, so that it winds the right way, down to the pivots attached to the second hand.

All the parts are taking on very very different mechanical forces and friction. When you want accuracy, lubrication is utmost.

There is a major point in the escapement- the pallet stones, that depend on the oil to have immense surface tension and cohesion.
>>

Glad to hear it, would hate to see an 1889 blown up.

I've always preferred the 1896/11's to the G11's. Mine just feels slighty better than my G11 in most respects.

Not exactly an 'acquisition' but I just put in my application for a firearms license (ausfag), first step towards being a hasguns.

I wish it was an easier process to get through, but no amount of government paperwork will keep me from owning an SMLE and a Webley.
