If you are hit with shrapnel enough to tear your skin and belly open it it likely that it tore/ruptured other things inside you. They would have needed to immediately treat this person- give fluids, stop bleeding and surgery. Also, the risk of infection is very great.

I am speaking from personal experience, while I did not have a combat injury and an evisceration.I did have severe chest & abdominal injuries from being ejected from a rolling vehicle which included but not limited to a ruptured intestine. I was flown to a level 1 trauma facility and in surgery within 15 minutes.

I had a torn aorta too, but I was told, after I came out of an induced coma 3 months later, that after removing a damaged portion of my intestine and it being reattached, the biggest test was if I can have a bowel movement on my own. My mother tells me it was a big deal for the docs and nurses in the Trauma Care Unit when they reported it.

I had several infections in the abdomen that required a couple more laporotomies (opening the belly) to remove necrotic tissue. Needles to say, when the shit comes out of your intestines into your abdominal cavity, it;s not a good thing.

I survived, an EVERY doctor is impressed by the details.

Yes, Russian tanks and German tanks used different fuel and thus had different smells. Dogs got confused.

Typically the dogs would charge a tank, the machine gunner would shoot some bullets at it, dog gets scared and runs back to it's master or hides under a friendly tank and blows them up.

It's actually pretty amazing how durable your gut tube is. It's made of pretty strong muscle to squeeze food through you, and although surviving something like that would be a miracle, it's not impossible. The important thing is that you don't nick the abdominal aorta. If that happens, you'll be dead in seconds.

They're only eating the dead flesh. Also, hopefully I can put this simply while still being accurate but your immune cells that go to wounds to kill bacteria and eat dead tissue actually die there after neutralizing as much of the threat as they can. Now usually, these cells get cleared by other immune cells as immune cells reach the area, do work and die in waves. But if you have massive wounds, depending on how many immune cells you actually have this can be very stressful for them because the cell turnover can't keep up with how much dead tissue they have to eat and remodel. This is why certain wounds can become chronic. Now the maggots will eat the dead and infected tissue, which helps keep your cells from having to do that part of the work which can make wound healing go a lot faster. That's the current hypothesis anyway.

If you take any first aid classes, they teach you that this is a fairly regular occurence after a puncture of the abdominal wall. Get a clean cotton t shirt, soak it in clean warm water, and place it over the bowels and GENTLY try to get them contained. It's really not that big of a deal if they pop out but nothing is torn or punctured and you don't get a bunch of dirt inside the abdominal cavity.
As for the soldier in OP, he prolly dead.
