Im looking at a Springfield M1903 in the early 50000 range, its got an 1919 dated barrel and its got O.G.E.K. stamps on a C-Stock. But it doesnt have a straight down bolt like other low number guns have. It seems like it might have been a WW2 referb since its got a later Remington marked bolt. Should I get?

Bought a MAS 36 for 400. It's super neat but ammo is expensive and can be hard to find.
You can get a "jungle carbine" or some shit for about that, but the ammo is again expensive.
You can get a yugo M48 or various other mausers for 250-400. I would buy one of those just because I don't have one. Ammo is still expensive.

It is good ammo, you just have to avoid the know bad lots, there is a list out there of bad lots so it is fairly easy to avoid the bad ones. Those boxes currently hold HXP 65 that I got form the CMP on a 1919 belt. I am slowly shooting up the ball ammo, and holding onto the AP for SHTF contingencies. Also a pic of milsurp collection.

Ok. I guess my subsequent question would be, what country or rifle appeals to you?

But for a few suggestions...
1891 Argentine Mauser.
M48 Yugo Mauser
M91/30 Mosin Haven't
Vz24 Mauser
Brazilian 1908 Mauser
Mas 36

My personal favorite is the Mas, but I also reload. Reloading will greatly increase your ammo options.

Red pill me on the Yugo SKS and the M1 carbine. Local store has both, but I know barely anything about the m1 and slightly more about the SKS
>>
>>33527421
The Yugos are nice, it's a brand-new SKS for $450 which you're not going to find anywhere else. The grenade launcher is cute.

M1 carbine is a meme gun that shoots a meme cartridge. Very expensive, not very aesthetic, and easily surpassed by a dozen other carbines/cartridges at everything besides being an M1 carbine for >muh history.

I love my M1 Carbines, handy and real fun to shoot. You might run into issues with ejecting/extraction but should be able to to fix it with some new parts for under $40 like I did. If it's an original USGI Carbine under $800 I'd say go for it. I don't have an SKS yet but that is next on the list. The Yugos seem to be the nicest. What's the store asking for them?

Wants $799 for the carbine, I forgot the manufacturer but it has a bayonet lug and the bolt handle wiggles a bit but it locks up fine. Wants $500 for the SKS, but SOG has them for $419 so I might just get one shipped in to another FFL that doesn't charge as much for transfers.

The bayonet lug just means it was rearsenaled for the Korean War as most were, the manufacturer makes all the difference in terms of price. The bolt handle wiggle is normal.

It's usually available near me for 40-50 cents a round. I have heard that they can be used for hunting or home protection and the round is ballistically similar to .357 Magnum.
>>
>>33527835
Paki surplus is no bueno.

For one thing it's cordite, which is bad enough and poor Enfields have been subjected to that shit for too long. Then there's the fact it's all been poorly stored and the ammo has deteriorated, case head separations aren't uncommon and hangfires and duds are a dime a dozen. Put your money into reloading supplies or PPU instead.
>>
>>33528216
I don't care what people say, based PPU is /ourguy/.

They make life good for milsurp fags, and to tell the truth I've never heard a bad word about any of their ammo until I started going on the internet. Yes, it's not match quality in consistency or components but it's pretty good, and reasonably priced. Also loaded to respectable pressures unlike some other faggot manufacturers, I usually find PPU is about 100fps slower than whatever military load they've roughly based their ammo on (e.g. .303 MkVII or Swedish m/41).

5 years ago I bought a hand-select M24/47 from Classic. I got a rifle with a barrel so crooked the front sight was to the right of the rear sight if you shouldered the rifle. I sent it back and Big Ben personally signed for it, then called me 6 months later to ask me if I still had it.

Never again.

All matching too. But missing the cleaning rod. I live in CA as well (Orange County) but won it for $480 off GunBroker from a guy in PA. Total cost to get it including shipping, paperwork, CA bullshit, and driving back to CA to get it ran me about $600. I also had to wait about a month to get it because the timing of the auction was weird for me.

Still, $480. Some rust in the neck but I cleaned most of it off. Just some dark spots now. Hopefully shooting will loosen anything I missed.

Yes. FFLs like these guys can be looked up online to ensure they're legit.

I'm an utter noob to gunbroker and buying firearms in general. New shooter.

So I basically have to get the seller to send the gun to a store near me to pick it up? and i need to go to them first to see if the seller is legit?
>>
>>33543654
After/if you win you'll get an email from the seller. Then you go to whomever you want to do the transfer and have them fax/email a copy of their FFL to the seller. You then pay the seller. Then the seller sends the item (and usually a tracking number) to your dealer. When it get there the dealer will call you and you go pick it up. Make sure you have a dealer who is willing to do the transfer first though. Gunbroker has a function that will find FFLs in your area to help.

What do you have already? Do you want to start up a collection with a bunch of cheaper pieces (~20 <$500 guns), a handful of expensive desirable stuff (8-10 ~$1000 guns), or just blow it on one-or-two rare and cool pieces?

Personally, I'd go with option two and get myself some nice matching examples of WW1 service rifles to complement those I already have.

Stopped into a second hand store on the way to work today, they have a "FN (French National) 8MM" [yes, exactly like that] for $699 right now. When i asked to see it, get a pic of the tag, or see how the action locks up (it was open on the wall) the owner sniffed and said "depends, gonna buy it?" So, i couldn't accuratwly identify it, but I think it's a MAS. Sorry, know very little about them.

MAS also made Lebel and Berthier rifles in 8x50mmR Lebel.

If it says "Fabrique National de Armes de Guerre" on it though it's Belgian, and probably a Mauser rifle. Do you remember where the rear sight was? Was it on the back of the receiver or on the barrel?

Pic related is a Mas 49 rifle, also semi auto. The 36 is not worth 700. The 49/56 is but you can occasionally find them a bit cheaper. The 49 is a steal at 700.

All are (or should be) chambered in 7.5 French, which isn't the easiest to find and is comparable to other milsurp rounds ($0.75/rnd usually)
>>
>>33535660

Depends on the model and availability. If a gun turns up 1 or 2 times a year max and you go from 1 person actively seeking it to 5 it can really change auction prices.

I recently got my first gun, a Yugo SKS made in the early 80's based on the serial number.

It's in decent shape, but the bolt carrier has some discoloration on its left side (see pic related). Applying some mineral spirits hasn't seemed to have helped, nor has taking some 0000 steel wool to it while it was dry.

Does anyone know what is causing the discoloration and, if possible, how to remove it without damaging the part?
>>
>>33556586
Just buy a Ruger Mini-14. There's many parts available and you can choose whether it's .223 or .308
>>
>>33556583

I'm actually seriously considering getting a second one, just because of the reasonable price and the decent chance that it'll go up in the next few years.

On the other hand I'm part-time work/full-time college ATM so I kinda want to keep my cash for if something else interesting comes down the pike.

Sub-standard.

Milspec is standard

Arguably Fulton is above standard.

(not)Springfield's M1a is a commercialized bastard child. Few parts will outright break from poor QC like the front sight and trigger housing. Sometimes they shit out a really good one though.

for 1500-1700 they shouldn't be that bad. they're closer to a 1200 rifle.

I found two for around 660 each. Maybe I'll pick them up if they go a little cheaper and are in good condition. It'll be a few month until I could afford two throw money on one though.
>>
>>33559027
I assume you went to their main site. In which case yes. Thats MSRP. You can expect a dealer to give you a better price roughly 30% lower.

Yes they're spendy, but they currently make the best M14 clone next to Smith Enterprise and Crane naval base. (They're the ones up keeping the M14 EBR rifles)

Another option is to track down an M14 parts kit and assemble it on a new receiver. Sarco sells Fulton receivers for 550-660

For a leaf you may just have to settle for a Springfield. They're not /terrible/ you just might have to shell out for additional tune ups before its up to standard.

I paid $370 for 270 rounds all in the original packaging. Ranging from 1937 to 1939 production. So I have ammunition with a mix of Waffen stamps after the Germans took over and Austrian eagles. Cool stuff.

Brass wool and oil, then leave it. It's what's left of a little bit of rust and you won't do anything about it without removing metal. And besides that it looks fine.
