As much as I think the old Galil is way cooler, it's not a practical choice for a new shooter, magazines are rare and expensive.

The new Galil will probably be cheaper than an original, and in 5.56x45mm it takes common AR mags, and it's also available in 7.62x39mm using typical AK mags.

Also if you're willing to put in a little bit of work, you could have that plastic lower removed and an old fashioned grip and trigger guard fitted, and it'll look a bit more like the sleeker classic rifle.
Don't know if it'll still use AR mags in 5.56 when set up like that though.

Some types of 5.56mm AK mags aren't too hard to find, but original Galil mags can run you over $100 in decent condition, and that's if you find one.
