Good starter AK? I've got an AR and want to have an opinion on both but don't know which to pick up.

seconded. Just buy a WASR
>>
>>33514993
if you dont have ak autism, the vepr rifles are a fantastic value. it wont be a "correct" clone of anything but its a very solid rifle.
wasr is an ok choice but probably just $100 less than a vepr.

wasr for out of the box goodness, pap is good but furniture sucks ass, saiga if you want a project (assuming you dont buy one already done), or an arsenal if you want best out of box quality for a smidge more than wasrs and such.

I bought a saiga sporter and converted it myself, its absolutely amazing and I'm glad I went that route.

Looks like the WASR meme train has left the station. I'll tell you what to avoid as a contrast. Do not buy under any circumstances:

Buy a WASR. My 10/63 UF still runs like a bitter eastern bloc drunk after 10k-ish rounds.
>>
>>33515109
don't vepr's require their special magazines? Something about different feed ramp?
>>
C39V2s aren't too bad, or at least not as bad as RAS47s because there's no rivets to fuck up. Mine has run pretty goof so far, but get a WASR.

WASRs are more standardized.

>>

the one i handled had a peened bolt carrier
>>
>>33516604
a good wasr is built as tight as a yugo. Most WASRs are good as of 2012 ish. Shitty wasrs are shitty, just inspect and you will have no problems. The fixed stock arsenal 7.62 import is good as well but to be honest both will serve you just about as equally with a good example of each.
>>
>>33514993
my first AK was a shitty home-built Polish AKMS
>>
>>33516709
Peening bolt carrier is a result of hammer contour. I've seen Arsenals with peened bolt carriers and I've seen NPAPs without them.

>>33516677
Newer ones ship with stocks that are identical to WASR stocks.
Mine isn't one of those. I took a belt sander to it and gave it a contour that I liked, then refinished it.

Unless you are planning on being maximum poorfag forever, just save your pennies unt you can get something nice like an slr-107 or vz58.

its more work and youll have to source furniture, fcg, safety, but you can find all of that on akfiles for maybe $70

Don't do this. I love AKs but the current market for them is stupid. WASR and NPAPs are going for almost $700 now.
$700 for a basic bitch AK.M92 PAP pistols have jumped to like $650 as well. I believe the market will come down. Patience

Do people like you do any research before tacking useless shit onto their rifles?
>>
I have a Yugo N-Pap in 7.62X39 and a Yugo O-Pap in .308. Both are great guns but the wood stock on the N-Pap sucks if your shooting with iron sights. It really rides on your cheek. I installed a scope on mine to fix it. The paps don't use standard furniture so changing it gets problematic. The O-Pap is great it came with a synthetic thumb hole stock that works great.
>>
>>33520240
M77 ?
>>
Yes the O-Pap is the Zastava M77. I actually bought it from a guy in these forums. Is that you?
>>
>>33520301
No, just never heard a m77 referred to as a o-pap.
>>
Palmetto state AK
>>
Yep says it right on the side. The N-pap and O-pap both come in both calibers. The main difference is the O is milled receiver and the N is stamped receiver. My understanding is they no longer import the O-Pap rifles in either caliber so the prices have risen. M77 is a beast and weighs about double the N-Pap AK
>>
>>33520364
Opap in 7.62x39 is a 1.5mm stamped receiver. I used to own one. Do you have pictures of your rifle ? Every m77 ive held has been a stamped rifle?
>>
I don't have any pics of it on this computer, but all the pics I have seen of the M77 are identical. I guess I read some bad info then because I thought it had a milled receiver. Do the O-Pap rifles in the 7.62X39 have the gas adjuster like the M77 does?
>>
>>33520542
>>33520364
>>33520301
>>33520240
I guarantee it's stamped "PAP" which is a Serb acronym translating to "Semi-automatic rifle/pistol." All semiauto Zastava guns are PAPs.
But only 7.62x39 semi-auto M70s are N/OPAPs.

Also OPAPs aren't milled. They're reinforced RPK-style but they're definitely, 100% not milled.

I don't disagree with you. I don't think it worth the time/cost to replace the furniture/break though since I paid little for it and don't care enough for wood to replace it on a beater AK.

Kills hogs dead though
