4 minutes into Thief (1981) the guy is using a mag-drill to drill into a safe, now I'm already pretty fucking triggered he was able to hook up to a power outlet without any trouble.
But he just plunges into the fucker with like a 1" HSS drill bit.
Anyone would know you need a harder tool to cut armor/targets stuff. Center-cutting carbide end-mill anyone?

>hurr durr I le saw the thread where someone asked if plumbers and locksmiths get triggered watching movies too
>tiem for board culture ebic win meme thread XD
Kill yourself
>>33510796
someone brought up the movie, i'm sharing my thoughts.
It is pretty damn /k/ so far. At least they are using real tools with proper PPE (minus the long sleeves).
The 1980s was undoubtedly the best decade in film.
>>33510796
locks oftentimes suck btw, you can open them with a pick and a screwdriver. older locks are the worst, yes you really can pick some locks in 3 seconds.

You're telling, boy

Masterlock padlocks are terrible as well. Most of their common models just have 4 standard (non-security) pins and a very sloppy core. They can usually be raked open, zipped open, or SPP'd open in a matter of seconds.
Standard entry locks in the US (Kwikset and Schlage) are a little better but not by much. A beginner's lockpick set and a few hours of practice will have you opening those locks consistently in a few hours.
attacking the safe/vault door is attacking the most hardened part of the enclosure.
Anyone else get a longing for a 1911 long slide after watching Thief?

I've been looking to get myself a good set of picks and tension tools. I'm not sure who to go for, though. I want something with a thick handle, but that's all I know.

locks like these. you can stick a shim in the right side of the right end number wheel and pop it open.

Southord PXS-14 is a good set to start with.
https://www.lockpickshop.com/PXS-14.html
Then you'll want some slim picks.

You'll want a triple peak / Bogota (not sure why the Southord set doesn't come with one).

And might as well get some top of keyway tension wrenches to go with the standard tension wrenches in the set, they're kinda pricey for what they are, you might be able to make your own if you don't wanna pay $11 for a little piece of laser cut metal.

That'll make up a pretty nice set for standard locks.

Also, subscribe to this guy's Youtube channel, he's a great resource for learning how to pick.

I occasionally drill QT500 (basically AR500) wear plates at my work. HSS drill bits are slow, but definitely possible.
>>33510992
the locks on my stuff are complete fucking garbage, you could literally open them just by raking across it one time
>>33511246
But carbide is obviously superior.
WEAPON. RETENTION.
>>33511197
All SouthOrd picks I've ever used bent or broke with light use. Maybe if you're on a budget they're decent, but you should definitely spring for a sparrows at that price point

Shipping is a bit more, but it's definitely worth it
>>33511291
not necessarily. carbide usually cannot handle brute force, interrupted cuts, or less than rigid setups as well as HSS.
>>33511331
fair points but it's better than taking 15 minutes to drill one hole
carbide'll cut a straight hole like butter
>>33511336
very true, just make sure you bring multiples just in case one gets chipped.
>>33511319
Weird, I've had that set for a couple of years now. The picks in that beginner set are pretty stiff, thick, and sturdy, I can't really see them bending or breaking easily. Eventually you'd want a better set with slimmer picks and I agree that Southord probably isn't the best option at that point but the PXS-14 is a great set for a beginner.
>>33511353
As an amateur I'm finding it hard to imagine bending or breaking a pick unless it was accidental.
Is it common to force them into odd positions enough to break them?
>>33511348
I wonder if a carbide annular cutter would work better?
Less material to turn into chips, problem is the slug it leaves that might fall into the safe mechanism.
>>33511409
It's mainly an issue with more restrictive keyways where you might have to twist the pick around to move the pins instead of being able to just push straight up on them. Also, occasionally security pins can get hung up a bit and require some extra force to move them.

you guys do realize that cobalt drill bits can eat through steel like that. the mag drill he has looks like it has some big ass motor on the back that could easily supply all the needed power
>>33510762
Machinist here, I've drilled into AR400 plate steel before. Sure it's a bit softer than 550, but the HSS drill went in fine, even if the RPM had to be slow.
Watching the Thief opening scene now, he's spinning very fast, too fast for hard steel, no coolant, and it's not making the right chip for steel. Looks like aluminum as the chips are bright, and some kinda powder, hard to tell.
>>33510992
yeah the cheapshit is really bad. I taught my friend to pick a cheapo lock in under a minute. Not the lock takes a minute, teaching him took a minute, the lock takes about 10 seconds with a half diamond pick lel
