Shitposting aside,my experience in killing caged animals comes mostly out of killing coypus, but if you want a clean solution drown them (check if the cage is good enough, they're going to struggle a ton, keep a pole ready to keep it under water, submerge and wait. Coypus need even 30 mins to drown, opossums must be less resilient). .22 aren't going to kill it fast, the p64 should do the job though.

I know, drowning is inhuman, but it's cleaner than shooting.

Non-messy way without the violence of drowning would be to get something that can enclose the cage properly, like a big garbage bag. Then get an old vacuum cleaner hose and duct-tape it to the exhaust of your car. Shove the hose into the garbage bag with the cage and tape it all up, then idle your car for half an hour. Dump the body on your neighbour's porch as a gift or just chuck it into a ditch somewhere.

Air rifle shots to the head will not penetrate the skull. The lead flattens. Even multiple penetrating 'eye' shots do not kill this beast. Alternatively, a hammer will need 30+ blows to the head.

I would now go for a body 'heart' shot with the .22lr. These things are no joke. When 'playing dead' is your evolutionary strong-point, it makes sense to be made of some pretty tough material.

Opossums are pretty cool. They eat lots of pests, don't carry rabies, or harbor ticks. They mostly clean up trash and other dead things. Also, they're very harmless and you have to be a real fuck up to get hurt by one in any way.

There's not much point to killing them unless you intend on eating it.
