Spend the money on a rifle (or savings for the rifle) instead.

I actually have more fun trying to work within a budget sometimes. Scored a savage model 12fv on sale for $319 about a month ago in .308. Planning to use it for a poor man's sniper build. It's been backordered for over a month, but finally shipped this week. Pretty excited.

budget precision rifles can be achieved:

I was wondering if someone could define the differences in rifle build between a "practical & tactical" sniper rifle, and a precision rifle.
Are sniper rifles intended to be fired from unsupported really at all? Or are they nearly exclusively fired from a supported position.
I understand precision rifles are exclusively fired from supported & benchrest positions, however.

This is awesome. Thank you. I'm planning to tinker around with handloads in the factory barrel first. It will be a cinch to re-barrel the gun to .260 Remington later on.
Any suggestions for optics?

Burris and Sightron have some good glass for the money, I picked up a used Vortex PST for a great price on Gunnutz
search around for reviews of budget optics, you don't need a $3K S&B to do great

It's bretty gud... The throat is a little short though. The super long barrel really picks up the velocity.
A few questions/opinions:
>Scope power rankings (I assume Vortex, Leupold, and Nightforce are in the mix)
>Opinions on adjustable cheek rests vs saddle style cheek rests vs removable nylon cheek pads

Nice. What caliber anon?

308. I debated picking up another one to rebarrel when they had that sale... I think I'm just going to wait for the 6.5 10t-sr to go on sale or rebate again.

Swfa fixed 10 mil/mil is another budget option, plenty of good reviews.
Toss that on a ruger pred 6.5creed with a Harris bipod and you have a 1000 yard capable rifle.
What is the purpose in the larger forend on the top stock?
I like it more aesthetically, but I think the adjustable cheek rest would be better
>>33507395
Wide forends are good for resting on sandbags. It's a carryover from benchrest shooting I think.

Any suggestions for handloads?

44.0gr varget over 175gr SMK, s&b lrp, Winchester brass, 2.750 oal.
Got some 1k yard hits on a 3'x3' steel target the other day.

43-43.5gr 4064, 168 ELD-M,

At this point, I'd just rebarrel with a criterion prefit from NSS. Pickup a $45 go gauge, $30 wrench and the $300 barrel.
