Self Defense Edition

Didn't see one in the catalog and I got a question:

I live in Tejas and I know it is perfectly legal to have a loaded pistol in your vehicle even without an LTC. My question is in what way is it acceptable to use it if I dont have an LTC?

Would getting out of my vehicle to defend myself be legal? Or am I limited to shooting from inside the vehicle? I feel like I am overthinking it but the law is vague and open to interpretation. Technically it should be okay to leave the inside of your vehicle to deal with a life threatening individual(s) but I feel with my luck I'd get charged with unlawful carrying of a loaded weapon or perhaps something more severe.

I've submitted all things required to get my LTC and now its just playing the waiting game but until then I'm limited to just carrying in my vehicle.

Your vehicle is considered an extension of your property

You can use it to stop any felonious crime, within justification

Honestly it all depends on the context of the situation

Off the top of my head, check AR500Armor or eBay.

You can find relatively cheap level III+ steel plates on eBay from seemingly reputable manufacturers. Just try not to get scammed by someone selling 20-year-old soft body armor for $300.

Yes I understand that my vehicle is an extension of my property. I think I didnt phrase my question correctly.

Once you step outside of your vehicle, you are no longer inside your property and are now out in public. If I step outside of my vehicle with my pistol, I am now wielding a firearm in public and without the benefit of an LTC I would be breaking the law, would I not?

The Castle Doctrine states:
[...] a vehicle or home, as a place *IN* which that person has protections and immunities permitting one, in certain circumstances, to use force
Once I step outside, I am no longer IN my vehicle and thus I believe the Castle Doctrine is no longer applicable.

>You can use it to stop any felonious crime, within justification

Perhaps if you have an LTC but I dont see that as an extension of the Castle Doctrine and it sounds more like duty to rescue, under which Texas still follows the traditional common law rule of no duty to rescue.

I think as long as you are truly in danger while inside your vehicle and there is no way to drive off, getting out of your vehicle to defend yourself seems to be ok. Sitting inside like a duck doesnt seem too tactically sound

>>
>>33504886
Depends on the situation and the weapon. For bears with a handgun I'd probably use a heavy FMJ from someone like Buffalo Bore. For defense against humans in normal self defense settings I'd use Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, maybe Hornady and Remington, some like Winchester Ranger Talon. Usually you should go with a mid-weight bullet of whatever caliber you choose although there's strong other opinions on bullet weights.

eBay and lots of time. Welcome to gun collecting, the internet has made finding parts easier but it can take years of weekly checking to run across a specific part for the weapon you're trying to repair, I've usually been successful with diligence. gunbroker and auctionarms are worth a look for you but probably not as likely for stocks, I've been waiting for special snowflake ammo (non-nugget gas seal) to show up for sale about twenty years.

>>
>>33507187
Put your SKS back the way it was meant to be. If you want a rifle that takes detachable magazines go out and find one designed that way, like the paratrooper model or an AK. Replace your obviously faulty OEM magazine parts, which are not normally known to stovepipe or cause FTFs, but in fact were carried through the jungles of Asia and the frozen tundra without issue. Modifying your rifle is pretty ballsy if you plan to use it for defense.

Yes

I live in California and here's my 38 S&W and 32 S&W (32 S&W Long which can also fire 32 S&W) revolvers mailed to me from GunBroker. You can find modern defensive ammunition in at least 32 if that's your interest but since they were designed for back powder cartridges it would be wise to only use modern smokeless rounds in an emergency. An antique will not only exempt you from the handgun age requirements but will prevent a felony charge if you decide to conceal carry without a license, as an antique doesn't need to be registered to you the way a modern weapon does (which is a misdemeanor if arrested but registered with CADOJ).

No you absolutely cannot wear LBE and a ruck at the same time. Its physically impossible. SOP back in the day wheb rucking was to remove the LBE from the waist and wear it around the neck like a big neckless when rucking.

Of course you wear them together but they aren't attached, and shouldn't be.

If you try wearing a ruck and GI LBE the permetherin coating of the LBE straps will catch fire due to friction with the frame of the ruck.

Currently deciding between a Mossberg 500 and a Browning BPS. The Mossberg is about $425 and comes with both a 28 and 18.5 inch barrel, and the Browning is about $550, only comes with a 20 inch barrel, but is a steal compared to what they usually go for. The Browning would also be good for introducing my lefty friends to shooting.
Any advice?

>>
>>33509728
Hammers will more often be double/single action if you like it, and tend to have better triggers in my experience.
Strikers are generally cheaper, there's no hammer to catch on clothing if you plan to CC, and most are effectively DAO so you get a consistent pull every time.

The biggest difference you'll feel is that most hammer guns are DA/SA and most striker guns have a consistent pull. Pick the one you like more.

First off, thank you for that quick response!

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for each of those? I am trying to get a ballpark idea of what I am looking at for picking up something cheap and easy to acquire just for range fun.

Are they good shooters? I don't want to run a 10,000 round endurance test. I just want something novel for the range and to add to my collection, but as a matter of principal only really want a firearm that can function when it needs to.

How is the performance on 38 and 32 S&W?

How cheap/easy is ammo?

Here's similar for $200, that seller is in California but won't ship there for some reason, just find some that do. Type "no ffl" while searching. Ballistically these are probably comparable to a 380 ACP if loaded with modern ammo from Buffalo Bore or similar. Not hard to get or expensive ammo in either case. My 1896 Smith & Weason Hand Ejector is a very accurate shooter and I've shot a couple hundred rounds of weaker Black Hills (?) which loads smokeless cartridges as though they were black powder, more about rattling the frame apart than safety, a difference in the combustion speed supposedly.

Are these guys just retarded when it comes to older gun prices, or is it more likely that the guns are torn to shit? The few times I've been in they always bitch about how nobody will buy used guns, and I am in fucking Alabama, so it's possible these guys are screwing themselves.

I'm sure they'll be there, everything but that S&W was there when I was 19 and had been there for a good while even then - and they probably just moved the S&W. They don't have -any- other used guns (no used long guns whatsoever) and they bitch about them constantly, so I think it's safe to assume they're just out of the loop.

I'm growing more and more interested in the 1911 too since it looked heavily patena'd; I'm not dumb enough to expect it to be GI issued, but it'd be nice to have something from the classic period and not these modern abominations.

Local sporting stores near me have stopped putting their .22 out to keep dumbass fudds from buying everything on the shelf; if your area was retard-prone they may have done the same.

Why can't I stop fondling my guns when I'm in my room? I feel bad because they aren't toys and would probably be better off leaving them either in my holster or in my closet without touching them, but I can't stop fondling them. I never stick my finger in the trigger guard unless I clear the gun first but I feel like I'm increasing my chances of an ND by taking them out and admiring them so much.

Anyone else do this? Hopefully one day I'll have enough guns that I can have some just for fondling and some for CC and Home Defense.

It's been readily available at between 5 and 7 cents per round with a large variety to choose from around here.

At any given point of any given day I can find 325's of Automatch for between $21.99 and $23.99 at any of 7 different stores. At any given point of any given day I can find Remington Bucket o' Bullets 1400ct buckets for $99.99 at 10 different stores, including Walmart. 3 places have had the 1000-packs of Winchester M-22 for $59.99 for months now. Hell I can find CCI Standard bricks routinely for around $40 and FGMM 50ct boxes for $3.99, and that's true match ammo.

Because the ATF never gets the serial numbers of the guns.

They are kept by the FFL for 10 years, and then destroyed. The only way for the government to get a copy of the 4473 is via subpoena or warrant, and it's person-specific. They cannot just go in and copy all of them.

If the store goes out of business the records are destroyed in the presence of local law enforcement or kept by the FFL holder off-site.
>>
>>33513289
>If the store goes out of business the records are destroyed in the presence of local law enforcement or kept by the FFL holder off-site.
I need to clarify this. The FFL holder doesn't get a choice. If he is retaining his FFL he MUST keep the records in his personal possession, if he is surrendering the FFL he MUST have them destroyed in the presence of law enforcement.

The only acceptable means of destroying them is 2mm crosscut shredding or incineration, incineration must be done in an actual licensed incinerator (can't just burn them in a burn barrel).

If you've worked retail you know that one of the main selling points of non-Walmart retail stores is that they aren't Walmart. Having standards may exclude some customers, but they're shitheads and will cost you more business in the long run.

Besides, the stores doing this aren't gun-centric, in my experience.

Same reason while 1911's aren't "drop safe" literally in the history of forever none have gone off from being dropped, despite there being literally a quarter of a billion 1911's made total.

The firing pin does not weigh enough to have enough energy to detonate even the softest primer ever created while dropped/slammed down from any height that wouldn't ALSO break the sear (and probably most if not all of the rest of the gun).

It's a total nonissue that got famous decades ago over a an engineer's hypothesis that didn't take feasibility into account.

>>
>>33509244

SKS autists are pure cancer. Just because they're not cheap as dirt anymore doesn't mean they have to be pristine collection pieces.
>>
>>33516926
The problem isn't ruining a collectors piece in this case, as it could be a commercial Norinco for all know, but rather that this SKS with promags and odd bolt has not been battle tested or really tested at all beyond OPs initial 150 round test. I would not personally trust my life to the gunsmithing skills of 20 year old Jeff from Montana over Sergei Simonov is all I'm saying. If it's just a range rifle who cares but if for defense consider using it the way it was intended.
>>
>>33517140

If you're ever in a situation where you're using 7.62x39 for defensive purposes, you'll want more than a five-round stripper clip because you are facing some serious goddamn shit.

>muh battle testing

Of course he should put more bullets into more targets, that's always the right thing to do, but if a rifle will shoot a target without incident it won't magically stop working in a situation where he has to shoot a person/skinwalker/burr/dire gooselord/dragon/Muslim with it.

I'm glad captcha's acting up, because it gave me the chance to notice the guy never even brought up using it for defense in the first place. It was you, or whoever the fuck was responding to him, to which I say this. The only thing more cancerous than an autist who believes that all SKSes must be in 1940s condition and pisses himself in rage at aftermarket stocks or detachable mags is an autist who does this and believes the default civilian use of an SKS is for being a motherfucking operator. I love the fuck out of my Type 56. I love the fuck out of my dad's Russian. If someone broke into my house I'm still going to shoot them with my 9mm instead of going full Stalingrad on them.

Do you realize how ridiculous it is that you're simultaneously demanding expensive fixes to make a gun less functional and at the same time assuming the SKS-haver is turning to it as their default defensive tool?

Sidenote, I use mine as a deer gun and have never had problems with it.

SKS take 10 round stripper clips that load the standard 10 round fixed magazine. Can't believe you are suggesting that in "serious goddamn shit" situation you'd rather have a 9mm pistol over a properly working 7.62x39mm rifle. That's retarded and so is that SKS whether or not he uses it for self defense, even more so because after 150 rounds of testing it isn't qualified to be used as such.

How far out can you reasonably be expected to have any accuracy with a rifle using just iron sights? I have two milsurps and I notice that for both of them, 100 meters is as far as the sights go. Is that it?
>>
>>33517424
Your sights probably go out to 1000 meters which isn't terribly realistic for great accuracy but is possible with 8mm Mauser and similar. 500 meters for an AR-15 to hit a human sized target is common.
>>
>>33517424

If you honestly didn't create that thread then there has to be some other asshole in here who agrees with me yet didn't speak up during our argument, which I find odd and unlikely.

Considering the cartridge, I would say it would be similar to 7.62x39 and tangentially, 30-30. So a maximum of 4-500 yards (for ad hoc precision, they still lethal far past it), but for optimum results, less than 300 yards.

What load should i use? CFE 223 looks dank but are there any other low volume rifle powders i can use? I want to get to 2000+ fps.

No i don't want VLD as this is a hunting load to cause a HUGE temp cavity and a larger permanent cavity to liquefy game lungs at 50 yards.

I'll do VLD later when I can properly measure rifling

Milsurp? No. Revolvers had fallen out of popular military usage by the time .357 was popularized.

Anything 7.62 Real Fuckin NATO is technically a .308, and while milsurp itself is unobtanium there are civilian production versions of almost any given military rifle since WWII.
Note though that you can't (or at least shouldn't) blindly fire .308 from a 7.62 receiver.
I don't think any milsurp rifles were specifically chambered in .308 though, maybe some late lever actions with tangential military use.

Guys I'm looking for a metal frame pistol that is 100% user serviceable, I'm talking about changing barrels, every single part by just dropping in replacement/better parts, that exists in .22LR or has a conversion kit for it.
And I've been considering a GSG 1911 or a Beretta 92FS with a conversion kit.
Now I've heard that the Beretta also has a frame service life of 35K rounds.
This was literally the first time I've heard about a frame having a service life aside from revolvers.
How is this a thing ? Does it apply to all pistols ?
What pistols would you recommend ?

Shitty engineering. Although, the wiggle doesn't generally affect POI because the peep hole is above the pivot point.
Basically the circle twists but doesn't move in away that will affect your shooting.

Kind of a weird one

So the ASVAB is graded against everyone else who took it in the last 5 years right? At least that's what /meg/ told me. So if it's graded against that wouldn't it indicate 29% of the people who take it are barred from enlistment? 30 is the minimum score and it's a percentile test meaning if you get a 43 you did better than 42% of the population, if you get a 58 you did better than 57% of the population etc? But that can't be true can it? I know the military rejects a ton of people but no way can over a quarter of people who take the ASVAB get rejected just based on that. As it is getting a 30 basically means you need to be given safety scissors your whole life. So what am I missing here?

Hey people

Recently my dad told me I could keep a gun in the house while I'm away at college, so I'm in the market for my first gun. I decided I want a Double barrel shotgun because it's simple and has cool factor.
What kind of shotguns could I get for around $400? Preferably with an ejector or at least extractor, but not required. Should I be looking online or in stores? Are they as easy to buy for cheap as I think they are? Should I give up my fantasy and just get a pump?
Thanks
>>
>>33530046
Double barrel shotguns tend to be silly expensive. You could get a nice semi auto Mossberg for what a lot of double barrels go for.
>>
>>33512014
Unless its an NFA firearm I believe it's automatically added to the C&R list.

For example, a BAR wouldn't make it on the list because its a machine gun, but a Springfield would.
>>
>>33530046
Just go for a stoeger coach gun. They tend to be inexpensive and they have some pretty cool models.
>>
>>33530508
These are exactly what I had in mind!
Do you have any experience with them?
I think I'm going for a 20" coach gun, but I'm not sure about the difference between single and double trigger, or if I'll need screw in chokes. (Of course I'll google this shit but I thought I'd ask because I'm here)
>>
I'm looking into getting something chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and I'm wondering what to look for when purchasing it. Is there any particular barrel length that I should go for? Does the Twist rate matter? How should I figure out the grain of the round I should use? etc.
>>
>>33530850
iirc single triggers fire each barrel in sequence when pulled, double triggers allow you to choose which barrel to fire (or fire both if you like broken wrists).

Chokes are gonna depend on how you want your shot to act
>>
Hypothetically, what style of Cold War military carbine would be the cheapest and easiest to set up garage production of for a completely independent unlicensed operation?

I just got my hands on a Canadian Inglis No 2 Mk I* Hi-Power. I've been doing some reading and watching about the procedure for removing the magazine disconnect from the pistol, and I have one question I haven't been able to find an answer to.

The magazine disconnect plunger should have a spring on its tail end where it interacts with the trigger assembly. Does this spring need to remain inside the gun for the trigger to operate correctly? I would assume not, but I'd want to make sure before I remove the disconnect.
>>
>>33521221
i still could really use some help with this.
>>
Guys I have a ridiculous question.
Is there a semi-automatic pistol where there is either no wear from the slide moving against rails on the frame or where the entire frame doesn't need to be replaced, but just seperate parts instead after excessively high round counts ?
>>
>>33532572
Been a while since I took mine out but nope, once you remove the plunger and spring all youll have to do is move the metal part that presses on the transfer bar (cant remember the name) back into its channel and it'll stay back like it does if theres a mag in it. You can put the trigger pin back in or not (it holds no purpose without the disconnect), I did because aesthetics.
