Dumb japs put the propeller on the back where it wouldn't even work.

No wonder they lost the war.

Pretty sure just about every tank from that era apart from the Renault FT could be considered ``fucking stupid".

And the flying tank idea isn't that bad, even modern armies recognize there's a need for it, and it's doubly so in a place like Russia where distances can be so great.

Mainly, better forward visibility and (if applicable) gun-mounting options.
Also, pusher props leave fuselage/nacelle airflow laminar and undisturbed, resulting in drag.
Also I suppose there may be aesthetic appeal.

Drawbacks are more extensive.
Balance and stability considerations tend to be trickier with a rear-mounted engine.
Propeller clearance can be an issue, either with the ground in a nose-up landing attitude or with empennage for tailed designs with a mid-mounted pusher engine. Smaller propellers that these factors may demand are less efficient at low speeds. Takeoff performance suffers.
Propeller performance also suffers due to the propeller working in the accelerated, turbulent slipstream of the fuselage or nacelles.
Propeller noise tends to be much higher too, due to interaction with exhaust or the wing's wake.
Depending on arrangement, tail surfaces may not benefit from additional control authority due to propeller blast like they do on conventional tractor aircraft.

None of these are total dealbreakers of course, but in general pushers are only a net-advantage in niche applications.
>>
>>33505195

In an aircraft that small, falling from such a low height, autorotation wouldn't do very much

>Pretty sure that was deliberate to allow the fuel to act as a heatsink.
Nope. Not for the wing skins - they hold up fine without cooling. Fuel IS a valuable heat sink for supersonic flight, but for keeping the interior of the aircraft cool, not the wing skins.

The Concorde and XB-70 had much better thermal management, IMO. Forget wet wings, insulate the damn fuel from the wing skins.

I've seen those things in action. I hate it when people here admire that kind of "handy convenience" and "ingenuity". There are perfectly good cheap and field proven welders all around, but those guys can't have any of those because they would get stolen there the next day. The craftsmen can't have anything new or fancy tools there. It's not the availability, it's the fucking prevailing African culture.
>>
>>33507764

I'm simply intrigued by the ingenuity. I'm sure its super unsafe, but when someone has nothing, its amazing the things they produce.
In Ho Chi Minh city, I saw people that would wire armatures of electric motors by hand. motors from hand tools: electric drills, saws, ect. It appeared they were rebuilding items thrown away & found in a junk pile somewhere.
