Hey /k/ a coworker recently came to me with this and I can't figure out much on it. He got it for free from his father in law and wants me to clean it up and generally just service it. It doesn't look like it's an original but I wanted to check on the off chance I'm wrong. I wouldn't want to destroy something with some history. Thanks for any help.

All I know so far is its 44 cal black powdered cap and ball. Says it's made in Italy which leads me to believe it's a reproduction. Again thanks for any help

Inb4 OP shoots himself

It literally says Pietta on the side.

This may shock you.

But it's probably a Pietta.

Used?
$80-100
>>
Why does everyone offer such lowball offers on black powder guns? Oh you have a 1860 repro you've never shot still in the box? I'll give you 50 bucks for it.

Like dude...
>>
>>33500209
ops is is shit condition 50-150 is right
>>
>>33500209
Well OP's is $250 new from Cabellas, except his example is used and rather worn....
>>
>>33500209
see this
>>33499989
>I'm not familiar with black powder stuff
typical knowledge level of a seller
>>
>>33500209
If EVERYONE is lowballing, then it's not lowballing. At a certain point it just becomes market value. You know how a car immediately loses a significant percentage of it's value the second you drive it off the dealer's lot? Yeah, it's like that.
>>
>>33500255
its actually 200 new and they go on sale quite frequently for 150

250 is with the bundled accessories
>>
>>33500283
This. But I wonder how much a colt Patterson would go for.
>>
>>33500209

This

>>33499343
Black powder repros don't go for much
OP, they are only $200 or so brand new and you can even catch them for about $100 when they do black friday or have random crazy sales

Especially since it's used and a little worn, it's not worth much. Just keep it OP, do some reading, and get into black powder shooting. It's a fun hobby, and it's not expensive to get into, though it is more time consuming than loading up a bunch of mags and ripping through a few hundred rounds of cartridges

These pistols make decent entry level/beginer black powder pistols, take it to an indoor range and smoke the place out and piss off the mall ninjas

I wasn't referring to OP. I post mine for sale in every buy sell thread and it's always "you wanna trade me for a gecko" or some fucking nonsense.
>>
>>33500553
Geckos are fucking sweet bro. That offer still stands by the way.

Colt 1851 Navy in .44 made by Pietta.

>He got it for free from his father in law and wants me to clean it up and generally just service it
Hot water and soap will do the trick, just make sure you dry it perfectly, including all the little nooks and crannies. If you don't dry it thoroughly it might rust a little.

Some people say it's not good to clean cap&ball revolvers like that but I've done it dozens of times with mine an don't see any damage whatsoever.

After that oil all the parts with a thin layer of lube, ballistol is great for blackpowder guns so use that if you have it.

>It doesn't look like it's an original but I wanted to check on the off chance I'm wrong. I wouldn't want to destroy something with some history
It's not original.

>All I know so far is its 44 cal black powdered cap and ball. Says it's made in Italy which leads me to believe it's a reproduction
It is a repro.
>>
>>33499343
Heres why its worthless:

Its a reproduction.
Its a pietta (famous for low quality).
Its used.

I'd give $100 tops, thats NOT a lowball offer. Brand new in the package they go for like $250-$300.

With black powder guns they start corroding immiediatley. I bet if I used a nipple wrench to pop em off it would be all green and furry on the threads and theres probably pitting beginning to start inside the cylender.

Piettas are terrible and essentially start breaking as soon as you start firing them. If it a Uberti it would be worth $250-$300 used but its not.

Piettas are esentially wallhangers you can shoot a bit before they shit the bed.

Fuck I guess I never got the memo. Where do I find dirt cheap, shit condition black powder cap and ball revolvers? I've checked on Gunbroker every now and then and they're always upwards of $200... If I could find one much under a hundred bucks I'd totally get it for a fun range toy
>>
>>33500927
Try pawn shops?
>>
>>33500927
Pawn shops mostly.

Shit on gunbroker tends to be overbid on, armslist guys usually ask more than shits worth hoping somebody will be dumb enough to buy it.
>>
>>33500927
Also people list stuff for more than they actually want because most people try to haggle a little

What others say is true it is an 1851 remake by Pietta. Here is a modified 1851.
>>
>>33499343
pietta 1853 navy repro. its a pietta and it looks lightly used so its broken. dont bother with it

odds are its not even .44 either
>>
>>33499989
I feel like you may have missed an importat part of that post.

There are caps on the nipples.

How sure are you that it is not loaded?
>>
>>33501196
How "haggling" works on the internet.

>"Hey bro! Nice PTR 91 for sale, I'll give you $300 for it!"
>aww sweet K11, I'll trade you this rusty sears .22 for it! Its "vintage!!!"
>"oh a $1500 plate carrier system with all the ballistic inserts, attachments, pouches, plates, and trauma pads? Will you part with it for $150 and a box of 30 year old chinese .22 ammo?"

Also bait and switch and fake checks are a thing.
>>
>>33501019
>>33501026
shit that figures. Pawn shops in my area are really shitty usually, really shit selection. Just a couple of fudd guns and antiques
