so what i gather is most shops bump price up by about $100 or so. which i guess makes sense as a business.

at the same time i wish local shops could/would lower prices. i really dont want to see the LGS go the way of blockbuster because everyone would rather shop online...

Im a manager at a mechanic shop and im truly blown away by how low the profit margins are for guns, ive seen a few threads like this on /k/ and i honestly wouldnt regret paying full price at this point. Shit its a bad day for me when im getting less than 300% mark up on a part I'm selling.

Btw mechanics will fuck you regardless of how nice you are but we will fuck you even harder if you make fuss and then laugh at you when you finally get to leave.
>>
>>33497302
Yeah, I just look at it like having same hour shipping when buying from an LGS, people get autistic because they don't factor in shipping and transfer.
>>
>>33497373

Anon...sorry but that's fucking terrible. At least make it a percentage of a guns worth up to a point. A customer could get a $2000 gun transfered through your shop and you get $20 for the privilege, come on that's silly as shit.

But why? I make plenty of money off of the pawning aspect of the business. The transfers is just extra cash, people drive 30 minutes just because I am the cheapest around. Plus I get to see neat guns without actually paying for them.

Sometimes the shipping+transfer is less than paying sales tax, so even if the LGS can compete on retail they still lose on out-the-door price...
>>
>>33497280
>LGS go the way of blockbuster because everyone would rather shop online
Blockbuster went out of business because when you order films online you don't have to ship them to a Blockbuster in order to pick them up. LGS as an establishment will never go away without significant legislative changes.
>>
>>33497520
thanks for being decent anon. Lowest in my area is $20, some charging up to 50. I almost wonder if I could make it as an FFL solely doing transfers for $10 a transfer. I think it'd be fun. Would the ATF allow that/would it be worth my time? (wageslave so my time is only about $11 an hour)

No anon you are not running a business correctly until you have customers leaving your shop feeling utterly defeated and furious at the world. You want them to have to spend a few minutes working up theirs nerves before they can even take a step into your shop again. You want them to demand the managers number only to call it and have your cell phone start ringing in your pocket right in front of them. I want those fucks to leave in impotent fucking rage and take it out on their wives when they get home. I want to figuratively and literally cuck every single customer that walks into my shop.

HK only seems to give LEO/MIL discounts, or bulk buys.

When their USP9T (not SD) came out, it went for $999. Thats about as cheap as you'll ever see a USP Tac, unless they have another 'we goin bankrupt, $200 rebate' thing. The shit just seems to sell itself.

The funny part is that USPc costs more than plain old fullsize USP, and at $830 the small shop is making a few percent or losing money, unless the shop is a HK stocking dealer or got a promo offer.

>Springfield saint - $714

>>33499672
Come to Los Angeles and find someone doing transfers for less than $75 and I'll give you a cookie.

You can sometimes find an individual who does transfers just to maintain his FFL for his personal stuff, but most of the gun shops are a lot. Even the guys who used to be in the $60 range have raised their rates recently.

CA is killing its gun industry, so people want to shop out of state, which then kills the gun dealers, so they have to grab what they can.

Minnesota brethren, I just got home from Arnzen Arms. Very gud store and very helpful people there. Decent selection of stuff, with one whole corner of the store devoted to sigs. Their handgun selection is bretty gud, lots of Glocks, various 1911's and S&W revolvers. Long guns are mostly AR's and shotguns, but they also had a Tavor, a couple AK's and one of Kel-Tec's bully rifles.

This came up in the Beretta thread yesterday. Most likely the cause. Even the parts catalog is pretty fucking chaotic right now.

I gotta ask you. I've worked retail myself but in a completely different market. Do you think the M9A3's will ever come down in price? I mean fuck, I landed my 92FS for around $600.

>>
>>33499941
Yeah LGS margins are awful if they want to price competitively, typically 10-15% on popular guns. You can only get 20% or more on rare or low volume stuff.

>>33500000
Checked. I doubt M9A3 will ever be that cheap. Even 92FS railed/M9A1 is $575 cost these days, and non-railed Italy 92FS $525. The A3 has a threaded barrel, cerakote, another set of grips, and ammo box packaging. All of that is going to add another $100-150. Plus, with CZ prices going up every year since everyone is a CZfag these days, the Beretta is going to be the cheapest full metal 9mm soon, knockoff imports not included.

>>33500036
I see $1149 and $1399, honestly don't see any differences.

It all depends. I have my FFL but I run it out of a space that I run my main business out of. If I didn't get "free" rent/utilities it'd be a different story. I mainly do it because I'm in a cuck state and it allows me to do whatever the fuck I want. If I was trying to actually make money I'd do a lot more research about population, demographics, median income, etc.

I have a business plan for expansion (it's a great plan imo)but I'm sitting on it for a bit to see how the next election is shaping up. This year a lot of shops will be closing their doors because business is crazy slow for a lot of guys.

I've got the opposite problem at my shop. Couldn't get owner to order more HKs to break up the 1911s and Glocks. With that said, we carry a lot of high end 1911s so the margins are nicer, but they get so boring after a while. I don't even play with the new nighthawks anymore and we got most of the 2017 catalog.

Gesus ghrist, how long you own sdore before sdore make u jewish?

But seriously what makes you think you deserve more just because I ordered a more expensive gun from someone else? What did you contribute of value besides "jew lawyer says you have to come here first xd"? Attitudes like that are why people would be fine with an NFA repeal wiping out 90 percent of shops.
>>
>>33500385
keep in mind the info you're getting today might not be entirely accurate depending on your shop's volume, distributors, shipping, specials, sales, when they bought etc.
>>
>>33500408
Repealing the NFA wouldn't wipe out any gun stores that weren't already on their way out.
>>
>>33500408
Shitposting aside, I agree that flat fee is more reasonable. The paperwork and storage requirement is roughly the same for every transfer. Plus, for anything cool that comes through the shop for a transfer, you can bet that the entire shop has played with it. The transfer fee also protects local shops by forcing people to pay local prices on cheap guns. No one is going to try to save $20 on a Maverick 88 by buying from buds and lose far more on transfer and shipping.

Agreed, though I feel for the ones on the brink who need a marketing push. I got one near me called specdive tactical, they've got a lot they could be pushing on like classes and such, and a full smith in the back, so they are built for the long haul imo. But being in an industrial park, and the owner being an older sf dude who does not youtube, no one knows about them.

Meanwhile I know exactly who would survive in my area, it'd the shop in a high traffic strip mall with deals cut foresight sauer and 5.11 tac, complete with staff who give you the stink eye for *only* buying a holster.
>>
>>33497825
Going to ask this but for their RPD. My dealer told me he could do $2200 out the door for it. Not bad since DSA retails for $2200, so the shipping and transfer are essentially free.

>>33500641
No idea, I can't see DSA firearms on my account.
>>
>>33499338
Gunshop anon, get it down to $20.00 if you can, and then make a bunch of flyers advertising your low transfer fees and put it wherever your customer demographics (Fudds, CoD kiddies, Malaysian watering can painting forum autists, et al) usually also go to.
Your biggest problem is shitty foot traffic, so you have to in a sense, take your business to them.

Once you get the word out that you have relatively low transfer fees/ whatever deal you're doing at the time, you should be able to build up a customer base, maybe even have a referral system where if a customer brings a friend who ends up purchasing a gun too, 5-10% off their next purchase, effectively turning your now loyal customers into your salesmen.

yeah im in california. they dont care if they are priced out of the market, because they have you by the balls. if a shop like OPs opened up and was only charging $35 for internet transfers, they would literally take all the business and kill it here. keep in mind we have a mandatory $25 state fee, so OPs shop would charge $60 and still be about half of the next gunshop in town. OP you just need to pivot your business model from selling guns on the counter, to providing FFL transfers for people who collect or buy shit from the internet

lots of fudd gunshop owners dont understand the level of demand yet and are getting their ass kicked by kitchen table FFLs who just buy huge safes for their garage and do internet transfers for cheap. unfortunately i dont have anyone like that near me but i know its a common thing in california, and some people do it as a second job to bring in a ton of cash. i have read that some dudes charge $25 + $25 state fee for a total of $50 for internet purchases and they are really popular
>>
>>33500749
I should also say that I moved to this small store after managing the firearms counter at Cabela's for 10 years. At least around here the "purchasing power" of a big-box store only buys you an additional 2-3% off. I know supposedly on the coasts it's higher but the market is so saturated around here even the distributors have to sell low.
>>
>>33500699
Typically same as black Glocks, just a matter of finding them in stock. A lot of them are distributor exclusives so you won't find them everywhere.

>>33500763
>CZ 75B - $485.97. Note that CZ shit is out of stock for most of our distributors because of high demand and in between CZ shipments. We're only getting a few a month and they all fly out the door.
>>
>>33499703
they think that gives them the name brand image, of exclusivity. its a common marketing tactic. charge more so people associate your brand as "high end", regardless of whether there is value there or not
>>
>>33500722

No, I got that just fine it just wasn't interesting to me so I didn't respond. I just care about gun people who love guns and are real good with them, there will always be *some* space for a brick and mortar store like that, even if most of it is a show floor.

Think of it like cars, most stuff might be serviced by insurance companies and contracted shops nowadays, but there will always be "shops" that can do just about anything within a range of models, and it's important to keep the flame alive. Just since that shitty law everyone wants their "shop" to be an excuse to trap shekels, when it should instead be a repository of knowledge and specialized equipment.

What you are describing is a "kitchen table" FFL and they used to be extremely common. Let so now, the gay ATF is cool with FFLs not having an actual place of business. I don't know that it's expressly forbidden, but my understanding is they have cracked down on it to some extent.

To make a transfer business work you would need a relatively secure way of receiving deliveries, a secure building and/or a big safe, and the time to sit around and do the transfers.

Might be a good gig for someone who is retired or already has a retail operation going. My old dealer operated his FFL out of a liquor store he owned. And yes it was fun as fuck to pick guns up at a liquor store.

Does your employer encourage or motivate you to learn technicals, specifics or to participate in shooting activities?
>>
>>33504452
No, but obviously a passion for and knowledge of guns without requiring training is a plus when getting hired at a gun shop. Only the gunsmith is required to know technical stuff, but even then, general gunshop "gunsmithing" isn't technical. It's mostly shit like build an AR or help install new sights. Being able to shoot and knowing small technical details aren't necessary for selling guns. In fact, being too opinionated about guns might even detract from selling them. I had to stop myself from calling half the inventory variations of POS to actually sell the damn things.
