Does anyone here know anything about the Remington Model 10?

I recently picked one up for cheap (perhaps against my better judgement, I'm aware of the bad reputation they have), and I haven't been able to remove the magazine tube/barrel assembly from the receiver like pic related.

The latch at the front of the tube disengages, then I can pull the magazine tube and forearm forwards, but the block that holds the tube and barrel won't rotate and come off.

I'm thinking about whacking it with a rubber hammer until it agrees with me, is that a bad idea?

Alright, I took some actual photos of my gun to make this a little more interesting, maybe someone will bite.

It's a bit of an abortion. Someone nickeled it and cut it down to 24 inches.

I'm pretty sure the previous owner made the stock by hand.

Maybe this is an easier question for someone to answer, how the fuck do I take off this abomination of a stock if there are no screws holding on the buttpad?

Replacement stocks run about half of what I paid for the gun, but I'd like to take this off and recontour it to fit a human. Is the buttpad glued on or something?

Year of production? Old Remington is fine. It's new Remington that has the issues.

As for the stuck part I recommend a penetrating oil and gentle force to start with. If that fails take it to a qualified gunsmith.

This is as far as I can get through the takedown process.

I can hear a dowel rattling around in the magazine tube and it's driving me fuckin' nuts. I bought the gun for the sole purpose of slamfiring through 6 shells at once and it's definitely got a magazine plug that I can't get at right now.
>>33496285
Hey, thanks for the advice.
They made these between 1908 and 1929. Definitely old Remington.
Do you have a particular kind of penetrating oil you recommend?
And I've thought about taking it to a gunsmith, but the whole reason I bought it was to spend little to no money. I'm planning on cutting down the barrel some more, rebeading it, reshaping the stock, maybe sandblasting it and giving it a less flamboyant finish when it's all said and done.

But I need to figure out how to take the damn thing apart first.

You have a Remington made in the 20's. Bad Remington is after 1992. You dun good, kommerade. Get the exact year and month it was made from the 2-letter code on the left rear barrel, and use this chart.

>>33496270
Ye gags, how fucking horrifying.

>>33496282
There are screws behind the TEENY TINY little slits. Here's how you get at them: Take a flathead screwdriver, put some dish soap (yes, dish soap) on the end and force it into the hole (insert rape joke here). You'll know if it's actually a phillips screw in there if you can't get any purchase.

I'm sure you have this pic, but just in case...

As to the non-rotating part: Best would be some kind of penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench, but a good WD-40 soak, and let sit for a few hours, will probably do the trick. Heating the stuck area with a hair dryer is sometimes enough to expand things and loosen up tolerances.

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.
The serial is U651XX, does that mean it was made before 1920?

I'll get it soaking in WD40 right away, hopefully I can get this old girl taken apart and cleaned, god knows she needs it. And that magazine plug definitely has to go.

I think I can see two little slits in the buttpad, now that you mention it. Hopefully I can get this thing off and make it remotely pleasant to hold. Although whoever made this stock did an okay job on some parts. Probably better than I would do if I had to start from scratch.

Here it is with some other weird old guns.

(don't worry, I rescued the old girl)

What worries me is that nickel finish. You can get it off with nickel stripper ( http://www.caswellplating.com/electroplating-anodizing/metal-strippers/metalx-b-9-nickel-stripper-2-5lb.html ) but then what? Would you be willing to cold-blue the entire firearm? Attempt to rust blue it?

It's actually a French MAB model D in .32 ACP.
...another one of my problem guns. It's been giving me light primer strikes and slamfires as of late. I think it needs a new striker and striker spring.

The barrel code on my gun is RR, but I don't think they made these any later than 1929, did they?

Also, I soaked the gun in WD40 for a while and it still wouldn't budge. It's not like it's hanging up, it's just solidly locked into place. I'll leave it be for a while and if it doesn't loosen up I'll give the hairdryer a go.
>>
>>33496652
Cool gun man, I like it. Yeah, sounds like the striker spring to me too.

'RR' would make it Nov, 1924. They reuse the letters every 26 years :D

It might just need more time to soak, but if that doesn't work, and then the hairdryer doesn't work... some *light* raps with a rubber mallet might be in order. I'm horrified you'll bend the magazine lever though...

That's gorgeous! Looks like a brand new gun.

I was thinking about just throwing it in the sandblasting cabinet and using crushed walnut shells on it, but it sounds like that might not do the trick. I'm not totally committed to refinishing it just yet, but if I did I think I would want to try to cold-blue it. I've never blued a gun before, and this seems like a good project to learn on. I saw some dude on youtube finish one in Durablue and it seemed to come out pretty nicely, but I'm not sure if that's authentic enough for me.

On a side note, I noticed it has a little screw jutting out of the receiver here. Do you think this might be part of the problem?

Thanks!

I'll be honest, I have *zero* experience with Model 10 takedowns. But I wouldn't think that screw has anything to do with it. More than likely, it's just years and years of crud and junk, plus the tolerances closed up a few thousanths by the plating.

As to the cold bluing, I've reblued entire firearms with cold blue, and pic related is my go-to. HOWEVER, no cold-blue is going to be as durable or long-lasting as other finishes. It's strictly a "look pretty". Nice thing is, it's easy to re-do or touch up when it wears out or gets rubbed off.

It's nice to know how old the gun is, thanks!

If I was gonna hit it with a mallet, I'd just hit that solid block that connects to the receiver and holds both the tube and the barrel. I don't think I'd deform it, but I'll let the WD40 set in for a while before I use the nuclear option.

At any rate, you seem to know more about this kind of stuff than I do, so your input is very much appreciated.

This gun is really just going to be a range toy and a learning experience, so I'm not too worried about durability. If it looks pretty, that's enough.

If it's not too much to ask, what's the procedure for using that stuff? I've done spray-on enamel finishes after sandblasting (the stock and mag on pic related) but never bluing.

Dat sum WASR? I have one too!

With cold-bluing, it's ALL about the prep. Every molecule of the old finish has to be gone, and then you can sand the bare steel to about 600 grit. The shinier you make your steel, the shinier the finish will be.

Then, you have to degrease like a MOTHERFUCKER, or your finish will be fucked up and streaky looking. I use hot distilled water with dish soap, followed by a hair-dryer to get the water out, followed by non-chlorinated breake cleaner and paper towels. WEAR RUBBER GLOVES THE WHOLE TIME, and try to hang the parts on wire as much as you can. You just can't degrease too much.

When you're ready to apply, warm the part with the hairdryer, then apply the creme blue in long, even strokes. I like to really rub that shit in hard. Let it sit, then hose it off with water. I use an old (degreased!!) toothbrush to scrub the residue off.

Repeat the application step till it's the color you want.

Here's what it can do.

Nope, but I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout at this show, as far as vintage guns go. Also surprised by how nice the Ruger American pistol is and how not huge the MK23 is.

They're not that expensive to get into.
I saw a pretty Winchester model 12 for $325. A while back I found an immaculate Stevens 520 for $290ish at Cabelas.

The combination of no trigger disconnector and takedown capability is fairly common in older shotguns, which pretty cool.
>>
>>33496739
That screw isn't the issue, I can't remember what it does though. The one I had was also pretty stuck and it looked like someone put clear nail polish on the threads and then put it back together to dry.

It was penetrating oil, a little heat (not too much to fuck up the gun though) and some of my limited patience. A big thing to make sure of before you resort to force is that the mag tube is free from the receiver and that the action bar is also free so you don't bend anything.
