Congratulations, your devotion to guns, armaments and being kommando has made /k/ube interested in you, it's willing to grant you ONE, and ONLY ONE tank of your choice. It can be from any era or country, be it WW I tank or the newest cutting edge tank that any modern nation ueses. You will even be allowed to have working main gun! /k/ube truly has some nice government connections. Here are some rules:
>you can get only one tank from any era
>this tank MUST have had AT LEST one protoype, it can't be concept, there must've been at lest one built
>you CAN'T do any modifications, all parts are stock
>you get infinite supply of parts, fuel and ammo as well as mechanical support to help you repair your beast if it's mainteance queen
>you have permtion to use your tank on normal roads, so you can even use it to buy groceries
What do you choose and why?

She might not be the fastest or strongest or even the most comfortable, but the Renault FT is my tankfu. Given that I'm allowed any variation that actually made it to prototype stage, I chose the FT NC1 with its improved suspension and engine allowing it to move at around- 11.5 miles per hour, which is still over twice as fast as a standard FT.

Probably something smaller like an M3 Stuart or a Renault FT so its not a nightmare to park and i dont need to extend my garage all that much

I'd like a StuG III G variant with the short barreled howitzer of earlier models.

Fast, light, sexy as fuck.

Stug vs modern tank with long barreled gun would never stand a chance in modern combat, but with a short barreled howitzer it could still be an effective piece if I ever was forced to use it.

Damn, this overall is a really hard choice.

I mean, if i want something I can go pick up my groceries with, I might want an M3 GMC. It's TD half-track the size of a pickup truck with a 75mm gun. Something cool to show around.

Or I could get a Russian T-14 Armada and sell it to the US Government.

Or I could get a T-90A just for the looks and aesthetics.

Though I have no personal experience with it the CV90120-T has always appealed to me for some reason. Light weight, sleek lines, hits above its weight class, capable of being uparmored and if you're fielding a military, parts commonality with a variety of IFV, mortar launchers, APCs and AA vehicles that use the same chasis. Ideal for the state on an efficient budget.

Based on the rules I would have to stick with the M2. Just because it would be the most practical.

However, if you took away that
>you CAN'T do any modifications, all parts are stock
part, I think I would absolutely love to go wild with modernizing old school tanks.

Not that they would be particularly good or anything once you were all done, but it would be a fascinating "what if" of fappery.

For instance, imagine taking something like >>33496194
(Black Prince) and putting a modern FCS on the 17 pounder, uprating the engine (almost guaranteed there is something out there with better power in a smaller package by now), adding some sloped applique to the turret, and sticking ERA on it. It would certainly look beastly, at the very least!

Too bad that doesn't include all of the built in problems like lack of a unity sight, being 9 feet high, rounds lacking explosive filler required for infantry support, having the loader loading a nearly three foot projectile in a turret ring the same size as the Pz.IV's among other design flaws. Even if you had a modern one made with good steel and a good transmission made to specs, it would still be a piece of shit. Though it is pretty aesthetically appealing.

Part of me wants to go for a prototype or something monstrous.

But instead, I'll go for a simple T-72.
Something that would be really fun to drive around, take to some kind of range, and that wouldn't destroy itself over time. Plus you can fix it if something breaks.

While the other anon's argument is shit, I have to mention that the design of the vehicle was influenced by it's intended role (designation).

Designation determines design (form follows function). The layout of a TD was a very important part of it being called a TD, at least in the US Army.

I've always wondered how effective the armor would've been against APDS ammo even at the time it was designed. I mean it is something like 2" thick which isn't a whole lot considering later Soviet designs had a similarly thin plate at extreme angles and that didn't work so well as it turn out.

>>33497058
Usually just depends on how a country uses it and what they call it. Typically MBTs are a vehicle that has heavy enough armor to provide protection against enemy tanks, at least in the frontal arc, a weapon system heavy enough to adequately fight an enemy tank, and mobility good enough to keep up with other motorized elements.

Generally speaking a modern MBT will have a turret, tracks, and weigh 50-70 tons. The only reason for this general layout is because this layout will work universally however, if you design a tank for a specific kind of combat in a specific environment like the S-Tank, an MBT can really take whatever form best fits the required objectives.
>>

Any tank is difficult to work on, aside from maybe the BT series because it's so light. Which also wouldn't be a bad pick.
I meant that at least people know HOW to fix them and can maybe even get parts.
Compared to a one off prototype where knowledge is very limited and some things don't even work.
I guess another acceptable choice would be a T-54/55 because you don't have to worry about the autoloader and the complex system associated with it.

The T-34 got stomped even harder than the Sherman; usually 5 got destroyed for every tiger. What you're thinking of is the IS-3 which had a bigger gun and as good armour as the Tiger II at a lesser weight. Soviets were the only allies that put real effort into heavy tanks.
>>
>>33515773
>IS-3 which had [...] as good armour as the Tiger II at a lesser weight.

I mean, this is up for debate. In theory it was comparable, but in practice the Tiger 2's hull didn't fall apart at random.

As for the last part; none of the other Allies needed heavy tanks. UK had the infantry tank, which had all the armor but was supplemented by the cruiser tanks for what we think of as the quintessential WW2 tank-on-tank combat.

The US had to ship everything across the ocean, so making pointlessly big vehicles was a waste of time when you could just build tons more of the ones you are already building. Besides, after the war we rolled out the T28, T29, T30, T32, T34, and M103, so I'd say we had a pretty good handle on how to build a heavy tank; we just never needed them.

What qualifies as a tank again? I guess it would be a tankette
>>

I wanted to ask, which is faster? The T-72 or T-55?

3-inch gun carrier always bugs me, it looks like somebody stuffed litteral 17th century naval cannon on a WWII tank.

Replace missile tubes with laser cannon and you've got one helluva sci fi tank there.

Tiger. The only driveable ones are Tiger 131 and that sits in a museum, and apparently one in Germany that was in a barn for years. The farmer would take it out for joy rides in the snow until he got arrested. I'd let kids and wheraboos drool over it and maybe drive it at reenactments, since seeing the Army Ordinance Museum before it moved was a joy as a kid
>>
>>33521631
That was Panther, wonder if that guy got it back.
>>
>>33521670
I don't think he did. I believe a lot of the stuff was properly demilitarized and then put into a museum. Stuff like the Panther, V-1, torpedo.
Any live ordnance was probably destroyed.

T-14 Armata
grand access to tank to US and china govs for few millions $ so they can inspect armour etc. Live with that money till the end of life.

>>33521411
Yeah, it looks dumb as fuck I agree, realistically they could've upgunned it if the Churchill chassis wasn't complete shit for what they wanted

That's kind of the charm about it...also what makes it a terrible idea.
Leave it to the Brits to fuck up making a tank destroyer off an existing chassis.
The actual Churchill tanks are awesome though.

>>33521834
Well they had the Black Prince in the works, which is kind of a Churchill. The Churchill Gun Carrier was an earlier idea.
The 6 pounder was improved a little bit with better ammo and the 75mm was pretty much what the M4 Sherman had, which worked perfectly fine for most things that would be encountered. Keep in mind the Churchill was an infantry tank.
>>
asu-57

it's cute

it's sort of a tank destroyer

I'd put a cooler and barbeque on it

you can work on it yourself it's so tiny, that'd be half the fun
>>
>>33522059
Oh yeah sorry, I meant they could've upgunned the Gun carrier with, say, a 17 pounder, but they wanted a faster tank destroyer which wouldn't have been the result

KV-85 had the turret of the IS-85, not just the gun.

Top pic, KV-1S with 76mm, production vehicle.

Middle, KV-1S with 85mm gun. Single prototype, deemed too horribly cramped.

Bottom, KV-85, limited production. Note how the hull bulges out to carry the larger IS-1 turret, not present on the first two vehicles.

The lack of power traverse in J model isn't the best feature though. Increased fuel capacity doesn't do much when you're forces are desperately short of fuel to the point you can't afford to train green crews til right before combat.

i believe it was for spotter rounds to mark targets first, this was an Israeli modified m60.

50 cal rounds cost far less than 105mm tank rounds.

the israelis felt you could not have too many mg's with their armor .

T-14 Armata.

I then sell it to the US government for millions.
>>
>>33522194
If it works like an Orion drive then the explosions of the warheads would propel the tank, not the gun recoil
>>
>>33522130
If I recall correctly the whole reason the Churchill Gun Carrier existed was that the British desperately wanted something to defend against the invasion of Britain that could take out the up armouring of German Tanks.

I'm certain at this point the 6pdr hadn't entered production and they were still trying to rebuild forces lost in the phony war.

So they took Churchills that they had loads of added a case mate and reused some AAA guns to make some tank destroyers.

I genuinely love the CVR(T) series of vehicles simply from a logistics point of view. You have an entire family of vehicles covering multiple different roles all using the same or similar parts.

Dear god think of the simplified logistics.

Its the same with the FV400 with stuff the the FV432 APC and FV433 Abbot as well as the Saladin, Saracen & Stalwart.
>>
>>33531026
Wherever the hell I want, who's gonna argue with a man driving a 1000 ton tank?
>>
>>33530838
>i believe it was for spotter rounds to mark targets first

Kind of. They used it in training for simulating 105mm rounds. Apparently the ballistic trajectory is pretty similar. At some point someone figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to leave it on for shooting people with it. The US did it too with their TUSK upgrade.
