For urban combat, m4 for light weight and ammo capacity. Akm is good if you are only engaging within 300m and want to have a bit of barrier penetration. M4 is fine if your troops are well trained and can place shots well. A well placed 5.56 is better than sprayed 7.62.

For mountain or countryside battles, 7.62x51/54r is better since ranges are greater.

In the end, shot placement > everything.

The development of them both came from two completely different directions.
One came as an upscaled SMG (the AKM) and the other a Battle rifle in an intermediate cartridge (the AR pattern)

The AKM tends to be a bit nicer for urban engagements (better penetration, better sights for snap shooting, more positive magazine retention, etc.) but anything not building to building is probably better suited for the AR (better precision sights, flatter shooting rounds with slightly less recoil, better barrel harmonics and overall accuracy, etc.)

In short, neither.
But they're good at what they were descended from.
I personally go for the AKM pattern of rifle as I live in a more urbanized area (and I also simply find them more fun to shoot and practice with)

If you get hit with a .30 cal projectile from an AK from your head to your fucking toes, you are going down, unless grazed (but even then you will likely go down). Only way you are walking(running) away is if it hits you in the arms (probably blowing off a chunk.) You may not DIE, but the second or third shot will do you in.

The AK was never designed as a sniper rifle, just like the M16 wasn't and most infantry weapon. But a .30cal will do much more damage than a fucking .223.

Sure there are variances, but you can not dispute the fucking science. I can never understand this ridiculous argument AR tards make.

First the cartridge.

7.62x39 is heavier, deals with barriers better and subsonic rounds still have decent ballistics.

Both 5.45x39 and 5.56x45 have flatter trajectory which helps with accuracy a lot and will do more damage to the tissue(due to different mechanism though). Forget subsonic, they make no sense like this.

The rifles

AR15 - bigger aftermaket(US), inherently more accurate, keeps shit out of receiver easier.

AK(virtually any) - more durable, when it jams it's super easy to clear(in comparison to AR), does the "fire 1k rounds and forget about cleaning but continue to function regardless" thing better. Smaller aftermarket so it's more expensive in the US. At one side there are problems with mounting rails, on the other if you can get original do not steal Soviet/Russian optic made for its own rail, they will be very high quality(surprisingly enough, I think Zeiss guys laid foundations for post WW2 soviet optical industry, so you know it's good) and if you zero them once, they will hold zero forever.

There are countries where AR's are quite rare and expensive and in those I'd pick AK, but we have 99% chance that you're American so don't really bother with it.

The difference is literally "this one does this thing a little bit better but the other little bit worse" which doesn't change the fact that both do those well. So pick the cheaper option, unless you have a boner for AK's.
