If this thread stays up I'll post a oral history done about my dads time in Vietnam. It's honestly some pretty crazy shit, even for 'nam. It really messed him up, he was a great dad though while he was around, even with his PTSD. plus the dude was 17 when he joined up.
When I was 17 I was just sitting on my ass smoking bud. Hell im 21 now an I couldn't imagine watching my buddies get killed all around me, gettting shot at.

An old family friend has a picture of his dad in USMC dress blues after WWI somewhere.

If I ever take a picture of it, I'll gladly share. All I remember is he looked super serious and had a cross shaped medal.

That sounds simple enough. But. It took them so long to duplicate the industry it required to make it, they weren't functionally operational until 1952 If i recall correctly. The first couple of waves of engineers tasked with it were taken out and shot when they said they couldn't even begin to duplicate it.

Probably not fake. Remember that WWI was the first time metal helmets were used since the middle ages. The designs were actually directly copied in some cases from like 13th century shit.

My guess is the chain mail was for some sort of metal splinters or sparks, but it's strange because it's attached to a full on infantry helmet. Pic related is of the final design for a British tank mask. It was designed to protect the face when metal splinters from the wall would spray out (could happen if a machine gun sprayed it at close-ish range).

Andrei Tupolev wanted to initially make his own design (ANT-64) or build an improved B-29 from the start (Tu-80), and he lived until the 1970s so whoever was sent to shoot him did a pretty bad job.
