What's the point of a .223 bolt action? It seems to me to fit a very specific niche where you can't really take game bigger than a pig or coyote while anything smaller can probably be dispatched with .22LR.
.308 is better for shooting at longer distances, and semi-auto .223 rifles are better for defense, are pretty accurate, and aren't all that more expensive.
Can someone tell me what the point is?

Cheaper than .308
.223 can kill moderate sized deer too
Good introduction rifles for pre teens.
Cheap ammo, but accurate out past 600 yards.

>you can't really take game bigger than a pig or coyote
Properly constructed hunting ammo can take down whitetail just fine. The mild recoil and extremely cheap ammo is also great for teaching a new shooter the fundamentals of shooting.

Legally. Otherwise, I have to agree. A southern white tail can be harvested by a 22mag.

>Buy your main rifle in x real short action caliber.
>Acquire same rifle with same scope and accessories in 223.
>Enjoy cheap training.

They're really for long-distance varmint hunting where a .22WMR or .22LR won't carry enough energy downrange.
Plus they're fun to shoot all day without breaking your wallet or your shoulder.
The same reason people still buy bolt action .22s when you can buy a Ruger 10/22
-slightly more accurate at the same price point, making them good for training and long range shooting on a budget
-forces you to take your time on your shots
-arguably more fun to shoot (I think so at least) when you manually cycle the action
-more reliable
-smaller profile
-lighter weight
-can put in a gunrack on a truck and get less stares
-ammo sharing with AR platforms
I mean sure, if you want one rifle to serve all your purposes, get an AR, but there's no need for that. I have both semi auto and manual action .22s, so I don't see why I can't have the same for .223

This, this, a thousand times this.
Too many kiddies come to this board and act like "wtf why own a sniper rifle that isn't at least .338 lapua" when you know full well they couldn't get a 1 foot group at 50m.
Plus it's like they all forgot why .223 Remington even came to be.

>Hurr durrr .223 and 5.56 are illgull cuz dey're inhumane!
You know different states have different laws right? Some states let you hunt big game with literally any centerfire cartidge
>>33488951
My argument wasnt about lethality, my comparison point was 22mag. Last I checked a majority of states are in the .223 is too small camp.
>>33488643
Its cheap and you can take it hunting
>>33488643
I put together a budget 223 on a Howa Barreled action last winter. I wanted a predator
calling rifle and a fun accurate paper puncher. Its cheaper and more accurate than most ARs so i guess it has that going for it.
In countries like the uk semi autos are illegal but bolt action .223s are fucking huge. its by far and away the most popular caliber for all the reasons already stated.

7.62x39 Master Race
>low recoil
>even cheaper than .223/5.56
>large enough to take down deer and other medium sized game
>accurate out to around 600 yards (with rifle pictured above) and if hunting you're gonna take a shot within 200 yards anyway
>more fun to shoot

Is a Zastava m85 a decent alternative to the 527?

527 Carbine Slav master race!
>>33489379
I like mine but it comes with an adjustable trigger and when I lightened mine it turned out not to be drop safe so I have to leave it at factory weight.
>>33489463
*also the bolt handle is very small. I like to operate it with my thumb and index finger like I'm eating a fancy pastry.
>>33489009
Eh, here in TX you can take game with any centerfire rifle cartridge. I wouldn't use .223 for a mule deer but for the small white tailed deer we have around here (a BIG buck will only be 140-150 lbs) it's fine. My dad has killed over a dozen white tailed deer using his .222 Rem (slightly less powerful than a .223 even) with 50gr-55gr bullets. Just place your shots in the vitals behind the shoulder and don't take any shots past 200 yards and it works great.

>What's the point of a .223 bolt action?
>pig or coyote
Holy shit anon how can you ask a question and then answer it so blatantly in the same paragraph
>>33489308
>fun
This is correct
>everything else
Wrong.
I wouldn't take a .223 or a 7.62x39 after moose or elk. I'd take both after deer or boar. I'd only take the .223 after coyotes, because it's relatively fur friendly. It's also a better round for target shooting. .223 wins by versatility.
What .223 bolt actions come with irons? Besides cz and rgs
>not using a .223 bolt action to kill child slaves for not refining heroin fast enough
>>33489631
>fun
This is correct
>everything else
Wrong.
>low recoil
7.62x39 is definitely low recoil
>even cheaper than .223/5.56
Most 7.62x39 is steel cased, and most .223/5.56 is brass cased. It's cheaper unless you're running steel cased in both, which makes the price about the same. But most people I know usually only run brass cased ammo for their .223/5.56. So I'll kinda concede on that point.
>large enough to take down deer and other medium sized game
I've taken down plenty of deer and boar with 7.62x39, which I'd call medium sized game. I wouldn't advise going after game like moose or elk either, but I'd call that large sized game.
>accurate out to around 600 yards (with rifle pictured above) and if hunting you're gonna take a shot within 200 yards anyway
I've done it consistently on a man-sized target with iron sights
For target shooting I'll concede .223/5.56 is better
