Good deals edition:
Whittaker guns has the Tikka CTR 6.5 CM 24" back in stock at an awesome price of $820.

Only telling you heathens because I already ordered mine. Going to put my cookie cutter 6-24 ebr2c pst on it.

Also, MidwayUSA has Lapua 6.5CM brass in stock as of 2 days ago. Small rifle primer.

Who's shooting what these days?

Recently got a savage 93tr in 17hmr for 325 OTD , I've got a millet 4-16x50 sitting on it right now. I'm debating on what ammo to start with gr wise but it's looking like the 17gr.

I hope to push this little guy to 250yrd.

7 pounds with that barrel? The stock must be inanely light, I need to go see how rigid it is to determine whether I have regrets for buying a Bergara B-14 HMR.
>>
Fuckit, I'ma bump once
>>
>>33481366
I think the stock is quite light; my T3 lite has a crazy light stock weight. The 24" are supposed to be 8lbs IIRC. People say they shoot quite nice, and the stocks they come with work quite well.

My ONE iffy thing about the tikkas is the recoil lug is a channel that an aluminum/steel/titanium block sits in. I'm almost tempted to TIG weld it on there but I'd rather not screw with it if it works.

Also, it seems like lots of people are coming out with barrel nut systems for non-savage rifles that are working quite well.
>>
Thoughts on the Tikka T3 in 6.5x55 Swiss?

I'm looking at getting something for medium/long range shooting that doesn't have excessive recoil, without being terribly expensive.
>>
I am about to start a 7mm rem mag build and this is probably a great place to ask this question.

Ive been debating on building my own bolt action or buying a savage model 11 long range hunter. This rifle will be used for long diatance target shooting and elk hunting.

Is the 1:9.5 twist rate on the savage ok, or should i go for the custom barrel with a 1:8.5 twist rate on the build. My budget is about 1200 for completed rifle if built, or too just buy the savage. (Optics obviously not included)

Almost just want to buy the savage and learn to shoot far with that. Right now i shoot a model 11 in .243 that i rebarrelled myself with EABCO SS barrel with a 1:10 twist rate and ive shot that 600yds pretty easily. Hoping to hit 1000yd shot by this spring. With this 7mm rem mag im planning on reaching out to 1500+ yds. Any thoughts? Do i got with the savage as is or build a custom rifle.
>>
Savage Axis 2 in 30-06 or Ruger American in 30-60?

Need a durr rifle for FL hunting next season
>>
>>33484234
If you're in the US, Creedmoor is probably the better 6.5 option. Yes, it's in the 'cliche' transition period between snowflake and standard cartridge, but the entire industry has been getting behind it in the past year or so. If in Europe, I have no idea.

>>33484313
With that budget, savage absolutely. Not sure if you even have an option for custom builds at $1200 as they usually start at $3k bare minimum. Buying a used one for cheap if you can find it may be a good way to go and just rebar real it with a nice savage prefit from a reputable barrel company. Check bolt face diameters though.

I think the 7RM is a really neat cartridge if you are hunting.
>>
I'm thinking .300 win mag will be my next rifle (however many months that is).
I've heard 180gr is a good projectile weight, but I really don't know, and
>what is a good barrel length for this?
>what is a good twist rate?

I think a lot of shooters use 26" barrels with 1:10 twist?

Secondly, is there a certain FPS that people aim for that is "good"? Like 3000fps for example
>>
Is the barrel break in procedure a meme?
>>
>>33484447
The 215 and 230's can start to do some amazing things and approach 338LM. These magnum cartridges REALLY need the barrel length, otherwise they're a 308 with a fuckhuge fireball. 26" minimum. IIRC the 215's at 2850 was appropriate but don't quote me on that.

>>33484334
Either will work. I've heard pretty good reviews on both, considering the price but don't expect to be overwhelmed by a sense of stock, bolt, trigger quality. A used tikka 308 may tickle your pickle a bit better.
>>
>>33479612

I've been eying this one for a while, but can't decide whether I should get this one or the one with the stainless steel barrel. Is it worth the extra ~$150?
>>
>>33484473
Unfortunately, I don't think so. You're trying to get the machining marks out in the throat so you take off the previously laid carbon and copper fouling that is shielding it so you can wear those areas down smooth. I've yet to see compelling evidence of the effects, but that is the theory and the machining marks do exist there.
>>
>>33484489
Appreciate the reply.
I take it there's a near "best" projectile weight for each cartridge, and a most suiting barrel length and twist to go with it?
What would you recommend for .308?
>>
>>33484382
I was honestly going to buy a remington or savage receiver or pick up a cheap ass donor rifle and strip the receiver and start there. I dont have the money for a custom built receiver just yet, hence leaning towards the LRH. 7mmRM is definitely the cartridge im using tho, Thanks for your input anon. I also think the 7mm family is intriguing and want to get into it. Not into the .30 cartridges. I do own an m1a squad scout and ive been shooting 500yds with that consistently on steel targets, which is awesome. This weekend I'm gonna try to stretch that out to 700 yds.
>>
>>33484552
Thats 500yds on steel targets with iron sights BTW. Not scoped.
>>
>>33484526
308, I think a 1:10 or 1:11 with 168 ELD-Ms are the best. I've played with 175 SMK's and TMK's for a while but the bullet length and COAL limits your powder amount (compression loads), increases pressure, and forces you to run it slower unless you've got longer than AICS mag length. 168ELD-M's are short enough that you can hit pressure signs (and an accuracy 'node') before being limited on velocity. I hit some fucking hot rounds while doing load development on those. Popped a primer out on once fired and neck sized brass at the top end and stopped it at that.

>>33484508
If save the $ and put it towards a new quality barrel when you do rebarrel, you'll probably see a difference there.

>>33484508
Really depends if you prefer the blued or not.

I have the 308 CTR in Stainless.
>>
>>33481185
Good fun for paper. I stop using mine on bunnies after a 150yds, it doesn't really fragment that well past that.
>>
>>33484617
Right. I like the idea of the ELD-X and ELD-M; basically explodes internally. What would you use for barrel length if it was 1:10?
>>
>>33484679
20-24", but 308 does surprisingly well with the shorter barrels, which in turn are stiffer and likely more accurate. My reason for getting out of 308 and into 6.5 was primarily to reduce the recoil so I could get back on target and spot my shots. Windage and less drop were definitely pluses.

I'm realizing I'm not too much of a fan of the chassis and I kind of prefer a McMillan style stock.
>>
>>33484382
Straya, actually. There's Tikka and Voere as my two in-budget options, and 6.5 swiss is a cartridge I find quite appealing.
>>
>>33484473
>>33484523
You're not going to remove steel by blasting 50 rounds of copper jacketed bullets through it in a special sequence.

Break in is a myth, but the barrel WILL change over the course of several hundreds or thousands of rounds.
>>
>>33484745
I do like the look of McMillan and Manners stocks, even Bell & Carlson. Chassis just looks less ergonomic.
Does barrel density (e.g. heavy barrel vs normal barrel), or fluting make much difference?

>>33484904

Looking for my first non milsurp bolt gun. CZ's 550fs and 557varmint caught my eye, but I'm open to suggestions. Probably in .308 or 300 win mag.

Howa 1500 is cheap and pretty good for the money.
Remington 700 has a good rep, but is more expensive.

You are aware that there is no such thing as 6.5 Swiss, right?

It's 6.5x55 S W E D I S H

Like c'mon man, how can you be interested in a caliber and not even know what the fuck it's called?
>>
>>33485510
Ah, fuck, you're right. For some reason swiss just got stuck in my brain.

>>33485499
usedguns.com.au is what I'm browsing, admittedly I haven't looked at other websites yet but none of the local stores have anything but swedish mausers when it comes to 6.5mm
>>
About to buy T3x CTR 24" in .308 since shooting "under 7 mm caliber" would put me on the same category as 6mmbr fags.
I figured if I decide I like it I can always go with a 6,5 barrel way down the road. Any reason to go with the shorter barrel for prone target shooting?
>>
>>33485583
Depends. Shorter barrel means less velocity, but more rigidity. If you're prone shooting matches I'd consider a longer barrel more important, especially for .308 since it flies like a pig.
>>
Debating buying a Billet AR-10 combo and building myself semi-auto Precision build.

I already built an SPR AR-15 and it was hella expensive.

How are they like maintainece wise?

I have a 557 sporter. Its really a carbine (20inch barrel) but pretty good for the money.

I regularly plink at 350yds
