So I've been a gun hobbyist and /k/ browser for some time now and I'm starting to think that I would like to start smithing some simple firearms more or less just for my own amusement.
Ideally I'd like to start on a simple platform like a break action shotgun. Problem is that for as good as I am with basic firearms maintenance and marksmanship I don't really know Jack shit about metals, alloys, woodworking, metalworking, etc. Additionally I don't as of yet have any applicable tools either.
So to put it simply how would I take up learning about simple manufacturing processes required to make a simple but respectable firearm?

Not talking slamfire garage gats. Something I could take pride in.

Additionally how/where do I go about finding gun schematics for me existing designs?
>>
>>33477471
>I want to start metalworking but I have no tools and know nothing about metalworking
apply for a grant, go to school
>>
>>33477674
Where, what kind? Come on dickhead I'm asking for general information/resources. Obviously I'm not just trying to jump right into mass production of next gen assault rifles tomorrow.
>>
>>33477720
CNC trade school is a good start, you can get a good job out of it, you'll learn 3D modelling programs like CAD and know the basics of metalworking.
Learning to work a basic mill and lathe is just a matter of practice.

How fucked would I be due to the fact that I am abhorrently bad with math and numbers in general? It's my only real cognitive hangup despite being pretty intelligent elsewhere.

The internet.

It sounds like you want to make a gun entity from scratch. To which I, as a gunsmith, say good luck. Unless you are just talking primitive guns or black powder, there's a lot of stuff to take into account.

1. Machining. The action and all the parts are machined or cast. As casting is it's own science, and requires even more equipment, your best bet is machining.

2. Barrel making. Modern barrel making requires specialised tools. I suppose you could do it like they used to in the days of yore with button rifling, but by my understanding, that's time intensive.

3. Heat treatment. If you're making something to shoot modern stuff, and probably a good idea for black powder too, you want it heat treated. This is a science unto itself, and for a full understanding and application of it, you need a college degree.

4. Design. Unless you're going off of an already tried and proven design, you need to make your own. A mechanical engineering degree would be very beneficial.

Basically, what I'm saying is do it like everyone else. Instead of machining your own action, just buy one that's already made. Then fit a barrel and make a stock. Boom. You made a gun.

Great to know. I'm fully aware of how monumental a task this could be to undertake I'm just not entirely sure how to go about it.
>>
>>33477977
Lol dude you don't need a fucking degree to make a gun. Just do a little bit of research and take basic safety steps.
>>

The best thing to do (after a break action shotgun, which is a great idea) would be to finish an 80% AR-15 on your own, then build an AK pattern rifle from scratch. The instructions for both of those can be found online and require relatively simple tools and machining. To get into anything more complicated, I would highly recommend going to a gunsmithing school (there are fewer than a dozen in the US, assuming you're from there). I can vouch for Colorado School of Trades, and I know Trinidad State College and Yavapai College are good too. There are also some in the midwest and mid Atlantic. These schools will teach you about firearms components, maintenance, and fabircation, but they'll all be exisiting designs. For the next level of actually creating your own firearms, you should probably get a degree in either mechanical engineering or materials engineering, or some combination of the two. From there it's a lot of trial and error if you're designing your own stuff.
Obviously this all might be out of the question since you said simple firearms for your own amusement, but making decent guns requires a lot of knowledge and skill, so you could go the more sensible route and read a lot of books on materials science, metallurgy, and machining. I just checked the /k/ Mega Folder and there's an entire section devoted to gunsmithing, so you could start there. I don't know if anyone is still hosting it or has the link, but it's a great resource.

I never said you needed a degree to make a gun. But to heat treat the metal, which is a necessary safety step, it would probably help a ton of you knew what you were doing.
>>
>>33478510
C-could you host it plz?
>>
>>33478603
Well the entire Mega Folder is over 75GB, so I won't start seeding unless there's a guarantee that a bunch of /k/ommandos will join in. Also, it contains a lot of questionable material and I may have a background check done soon, so I'm not sure if I want to be the one to start hosting it. The gunsmithing section is only 9mb though, so if you have a recommended secure site or method of transfer, I'd be happy to send you whatever you need.

Fucked up the the tracker, this one should work:

I'll be making a thread soon to hopefully revive the entire Mega collection, but I'll need help from other anons to seed

About as simple and rugged as you can get. A couple of builds some guys did of it came out rather nice.

git gud. Get The Ar/k/

265ish gig of stuff compiled from multiple sources, including the Megafolder and the Do/k/ument.

You can download the torrent on TPB, otherwise I can post the magnet in about six hours if the thread is still up.

Damn, thanks anon. I mentioned the Mega folder, but that was 3 years ago and I didn't even know the ar/k/ existed.

Don't trust all prints. A lot of machinist drawings online have mistakes or missing dimensions.
Always double check and verify!
