It's good. Japan is completely different than it was in the 1940s, they can be trusted to start to fend for themselves now.
Ideally, at least for the Americans, you want these countries to become self-sufficient. It improves their economy and frees up larger powers from having to prop them up. Of course, you can still hold the close friendships.
As threats from N. Korea and China grow (and ultimately become actions), Japan will become stronger.
Hopefully no war will come, but one must be prepared.
