I don't remember the exact exchange with the dispatcher but I remember being really frustrated at his questions and overall interaction him. I was on the phone with him up until I busted the bitch and took off. It felt like I was essentially just giving a police report and not asking for help while trying to get hell out of there. All this proves is that the Crown wont bother to pursue a case where they know they will look bad, or it will set a good precedent for gun owners.

You put a woman on trial for shooting a man, or a parent for defending their newborn, and you'll look like an asshole and lose the case.

But if I were to shoot some dindu breaking into my home, you can bet your ass I would be up on as many charges as they could think up. Starting with 'improper storage', illegally discharging a firearm within town limits, pointing a firearm at another person, etc, etc.

Even if I won my case, I'd be out a life-crippling amount in lawyer's fees, to the point where I'd have been arguably better of being robbed/raped in the first place.

The only real lesson to be learned is:

- Shut the Fuck Up. Do not give a statement until you've spoken with a lawyer. If you have roommates/loved ones living with you, make sure well ahead of time they know to do the same.

- Prepare your anus.

Oh and god help you if you use a Restricted Firearm (that's a handgun or an AR/SBR for you Americans). By default our storage laws make it so there's no way you can get it out, unlocked and loaded in time to defend yourself - and if you somehow did, you're automatically charged on suspicion of unsafe storage. Ian Thompson learned that the fucking hard way, and he was defending his home and life from multiple attackers with molotovs - and the Crown still tried to crucify his ass.

How do you avoid getting your prints/dna on a pistol?

Let's say I have some illegal drugs in my house, like a bit of weed in my sock drawer or some pills I shouldn't have. I'm not a dealer, and I only get drugs off trusted friends, so no thieving crackheads know me from the streets and try to break in, etc.

Let's say a completely random home invasion occurs, and some real bad hombre breaks into my house in the dead of night. I wake up, grab a shotgun and blast him. Call the cops, keep the gun on him till the cops get there. Basically don't say shit, prove it's my house with the deed/mortgage papers/whatever, and live in a castle doctrine state.

Will the cops poke around my house at all? While I'm being questioned in the car, will they dig through my stuff while the paramedics take the guy away? Assuming I have no obvious paraphernalia lying around like bongs or used needles, and don't have any drug smells lingering about. Let's say the cops peeked into my sock drawer while looking around and found a little bag of weed or other drugs, would I be arrested then, or would they ignore it and just deal with the bigger issue at hand?
