Who knows anything about this bolt edition?

off of a 1944 byf k98. I was told it was a batch bolt? I cant seem to find anything online about that though or about the numbers on it.

B 7394

I think might be b7394

That is not a German-applied serial number. Their serials always have the letter block AFTER the serial number, not before, and it is marked on the root of the handle, not the shaft.
>>

any idea what it is then?

the firing pin is definitely german

Here's an index of Kar.98k with reference images. Check out all the 1944 Mauser Werke rifles and see how many have "batch numbers" on the upward-facing side of the bolt handle shaft.

germans serializd their bolts on the flat part at the very base of the handle, not the rod part like that picture shown

It is probably Yugoslavian.

Does this serial number otherwise match the one on the receiver ring? Is there another serial number in the correct spot on the bolt handle root?
>>
>>33473206
the "serial" on the bolt is nowhere else to be seen on the gun. Everything else on the gun is matching. Also the firing pin looks to be commied As 7943 was electrostenciled on it

A yugo bolt wouldn't fit in a k98, unless op was wrong about the model of rifle. Yugos use an intermediate action and the bolt would be too short in a k98 variant

Yugoslavian Mod.98/48 AKA Mod.98N are Yugo-rebuilt Kar.98k. Yugoslavian M24/52C are re-built Vz.24s and as such are also standard-length.

Nah its definitely a k98, so maybe it's not a yugo bolt. I just have no idea what the fuck the bolt is then. If it got sent back to a factory at some point could it have gotten a new bolt from there if it was broken/missing?
>>
>>33473717
>Nah its got the original finish and all the numbers match on it aside that dang bolt.
I mean the bolt may have come from a Russian-captured refurb. I think it's more likely a Yugo 98/48 refurb tho.

Someone probably found Grandpa's bring-back in a closet but couldn't find the original bolt so they bought one on the internet.
>>
>Someone probably found Grandpa's bring-back in a closet but couldn't find the original bolt so they bought one on the internet.
Yeah I'm leaning towards this now 2bh. I have a rc as well as this one and the RC has a proper k98 bolt where as this looks yugo. I don't know why it has a German firing pin in it but w/e.

This bolt is almost certainly German-made, just scrubbed. Yugo-made bolts (M24, M48) are all intermediate-length and wouldn't fit in a Kar.98k.

Yugo M48 Scope Mount Question
I have recently obtained a Yugoslavian M48 from one of my local stores at a decent price. It is all matching with a beautiful looking stock but the problem that I have with it is I bought with with a possible scope mount (may not be one?) and was wondering if anyone has ever seen one of these before. All it is is two steel pegs put into the receiver with silver solder around it, almost like a perfect square. After doing research, my brother and I have not found anything like this before. We thought it was proprietary for a while (and it might still be). We did research on Zrak scopes, weaver scopes, German turret mounts and more but none of these look right. We brought it to a gun smith and he also has no idea what it could be. He thought that someone soldered a scope on then took it off when he was selling the rifle. I am really looking to see what scope will fit on it with these steel pegs. I can take more pictures if they are requested.
>>
>>33474685
How much rust? Check and double check the bore. Was it converted to something besides 7.5 French? Unless it has documentation or some other proof, it's to be considered not a bring back.

Brass or bronze #0000 wool is best (go to paint and hobby stores in your area), and gun oil.

For the stock use some warm water and a soft cloth or sponge; just enough water on the sponge to make it damp but not sodden.

Bretty gud; you came out at least $100 ahead. People rag on Turkish rifles too much IMO. How many parts are still matching? The beech stock is correct for a 1918 Gew.98; looks like a Turk cleaning rod and they put a wire loop in the rear sling stud.

I recently picked up a Turk 1893 rebuild, and a Yugo M48 (all milled not the later versions) both in good condition with cleaning rods clean bores and a bunch of 8mm clips for around 700. The M48 even had a correct sling.

It was fair, but not great, I just wasn't willing to gamble on gunbroker shit.

You'll see that in a lot of Turk'ed Gew.88s and 98s; they ordered a ton of replacement parts from CZ-Brno in the mid-1920s (along with buying up a bunch of Czech-used Gew.98s, Vz.98s, and Vz.98/22 rifles).

You have a nice pair there.

Probably on the barrel, if it's going to have one at all. I'd wager 99% of Arisaka T99s came to the US as pre-1968 imports or as bring-backs, mostly the latter.
>>
>>33482237
Thats what i figured.
>>
>>33482213
Most of the 99s were GI bring backs.

Incidentally, this is also why so many of them are bubba'd, rusted, missing components, or all three.

After shooting, how do you guys clean the barrel?

I usually run wet (with Hoppes no 9 or ballistol) patches down the barrel until the wet patches come out somewhat clear, then run dry patches down the barrel until the dry patches are (as close as I can get it to) clean. I always go down the barrel in the direction the bullet travelled.

Is this a good way to clean or am I going to fuck something up? I've only done this 4 times now (once after each range trip) and have fired a total of ~160 rounds out of the enfield I clean with this method.
>>
>>33483934
You could make a collection of 6.5mm military rifles from Europe.
>Norwegian Krags
>Swedish & Luxembourgian Mausers
>Romanian, Dutch &Portuguese Mannlichers
>Italian Carcanos
>Greek Mannlicher-Schoenauers

There was almost a Chinese-contract Mauser in 6.8x58mm with an extra-long barrel. In the end all 12,000 were all made with Gew.98-length barrels, and then they sat in Germany so long waiting for payment they were expropriated by the German Army for WW1 and converted to 8x57mm.
>>
>>33484280
>Could
Oh I intend to. Those Romanians are gonna be a tough nut to crack though.
>>
>>33483997
I usually start with one pass of a brass brush soaked in hoppes. Then, if I've shot a ton that trip, a wet patch. Then dry patches until clean, it usually takes 3 dry patches. Then just clean the bolt face and tip of the firing pin with several hoppes. Dry it then reoil the bolt/action and done.

Smooth, and pleasant to shoot. I was hoping it'd be more accurate but I didn't really shoot for accuracy. Also I found out I do not need a new magazine spring. No, just giving some advice. The best way to get people to see things your way and be on your side is yo be likeable. Logic and reason rarely sway people when you get down to it. People will judge their personal experiences above any evidence to the contrary. So be the best experience you can when you want to convince someone to your side. People are less likely to fuck you when they like you.

Some people suck at driving, some people suck at computers, some people can't ride a bike, some people can't shoot.

If you've practiced your sight picture and practiced your trigger pull and at least once shot a gun that's accurate so you know it's you, maybe you just suck at shooting? The thing is though, if the sights are lined up and you don't flinch it's hard to suck at shooting off a benchrest so maybe you need to practice.

Maybe it is just practice. But the thing is, I honestly don't know what the fuck to do to practice. I go to the range, put up a target and blast away. I don't really know how to measure my progress when my shots are so bad it's not even worth measuring. And now I don't even really like going because I feel like it's pointless.

Plus I can't see shit until a cease fire. The target is so small even at 50yds that there's no way I can keep aiming at the same point between shots. I just don't see how it's possible. I shoot, the rifle moves, and then I reaquire the target but I'm aiming at a tiny blur. I just don't understand what the fuck people are doing differently.

now I'm just rambling because I'm super butthurt about this and I don't have any hasgun friends to show me what the fuck to do and how to shoot properly. I'm worried if I spent the money on a new gun with a nice scope I'd be terrible at that too. The only gun I do """"okay"""" with is my AR with peep sights, that I'm at least consistently on paper with.

Get glasses if you aren't currently corrected to 20/20 or you know, something close to that. If you can't see shit you'll never be a decent shot because you'll never know where you're aiming.
Practice your sight picture. Just point the empty gun at something on a wall on the other side of the room and practice aligning the sights on it. Really concentrate on getting the alignment exactly the same each time. If you aren't aligning the sights exactly the same each time you'll never be a decent shot because you'll never aim the gun at the same point.
Practice your trigger squeeze. Dry fire, get snap caps, whatever you prefer, but practice pulling the trigger while aiming. Do it a lot. If you have a semi-auto and one (1) friend you can have them cycle the action for you after every "shot" to mimic the semiautomatic firing sequence. Make sure you aren't anticipating the hammer or flinching; the best shots are often those that "surprise" you. Just align the sights perfectly, aim at the target as best you can (you're going to wobble, it's a fact), and slowly pull the trigger. You'll be far more accurate with a perfect sight alignment and a perfect slow trigger pull done at any old random time as you wobble around the target than you will if you try to rush your trigger pull right as the sights cross the bullseye.
If you can, find some BLM/NF land with nobody else on it so you can go shoot by yourself at your own pace without a bunch of teenagers and fudds around.
Practice. Unless you are blind, have alzheimers, or no spatial sense, you can get better.

I already wear glasses. I feel like even when I get a new prescription I still have inferior vision.

I'm also cross eye dominant. I tried shooting lefthanded but it just feels weird as fuck and borderline dangerous. My right arm is weak enough as it is, that's why I shoot at bench with a rest 95% of the time (inb4 do pushups). But maybe next time I convince myself to go to the range I'll try bench shooting with my left eye.

Honestly I still have no idea what I should be doing once I'm actually at the range. The fact remains that I just can't see the damn target beyond it being a tiny blur, so there's really no point I can consistently aim at to create a "group" of any kind. So the shots just go all over the damn place if they even go on paper.

I will try your advice though, anon, to at least attempt to eliminate poor trigger control and poor sight picture as sources of problems. Sadly I'm a NYfag so I can't just go on land and shoot (this is also why I have no hasguns buddies).

Enough of my shitting up the thread though. Here's my K31.

i broke down last year and got one. i put a bump fire stock on it and everything.

its a pre-ban 9mm Colt. i use an MP40 mag pouch for all the 30 rnd mags it came with.

--------------------------------------------------

Its great that a new generation is getting into history and milsurp, and with games like BF1 being successful, it reminds 12 yr olds that there were other wars besides WW2. While this will have the drawback of demand and prices going up --- it does mean the value of our investments will rise. More importantly, historical preservation will continue and we get to experience the joys of educating the next generation of collectors on our hobby, just as the OG collectors passed that knowledge on to us.

In fact, the other week I was chilling at the LGS and an old man came in with his grandson. The old guy knew most of his shit, but I'd never seen him around before (which is rare). He goes on to tell me that his grandson had been bugging him for weeks to take him to a milsurp store. I start pulling pistols out of the case for them and point out the 2nd model snail drum mag. The grandpa knew what it was, but thanks to BF1 his grandson knew more about it than he did and noticed the MP18 adapter. That shit made my fuckin' day.

I just hope the next WW1 game is actually well made and fun.

Was this at a gun show in Texas? There was a lady selling French surplus "Balle N" on 5 round berthier clips, and just like yours they all had the tips of the bullets cut off from the German company that bought/sold them.

I regret that after buying all of her 7.5 surplus, I only had enough money for one bag of the 8mm Lebel. A shame because at $8 for 4 clips and 20 rounds I could have made a ton of money on just selling the clips for $10 apiece.

some good gets there. I wish I had an M39. my only finn mosin is an M91 capture/rework.

the son of the local milsurp shopkeep is a FInn collector so he gets 99% of the finnish arms that come through STL.

here's the link to the gun

that butt plate is turbo dead.

Looks pretty good to me. Definitely seen some years but other than the buttplate looks pretty good. For $325 I'd get it.

It does sort of have that Vietnam look to it. It was made in 1950 so it's possible to have been there. It's really not that bad looking for a Vietnam bringback. The stock and the metal bits look perfectly fine.

The guy is also wrong about the reading of the muzzle. The end of the muzzle were all counterbored at the factory so they can be converted to an LG48 grenade launcher.

Any of yous ever have to make your own spring?

100+ year old leaf springs broke and i can't seem to find one at any of the typical parts dealers. Found one on fleabay but the cocky bastard wants $50 for it

never gonna find that matching bolt
>>
>>33510689
Depends on the rifle.

Generally it kills the deal. Something like an Arisaka i would still consider if it had other redeeming qualities i desire.

Missmatched bands or small parts i don't look twice about. The receiver, bolt, barrel, stock are the only things that will truly effect anything and the main parts I'm looking for. In that order.

That being said a killer deal will have me second guessing myself. I have a Savage Enfield with a missmatched bolt that was oddly still made in the same day going by its serial

Now what was that called... M1885 Lee Navy Rifle? Lee-Remington? Might have been 1884 instead of 1885. Might be the first firearm ever designed to have a proper spring-operated box magazine.

It bothers me, but the less I paid for the rifle the less it irks me. A good deal on a model that I want won't stop me from buying even if it's mis-matched.

Oh my fuck. Is that an Ishapore 7.62 Nato SMLE, but altered to be in a strange No.5 configuration? My view of this is a strange combination of fascinated, aroused, and disgusted. Compact, light, and with the widely available .308/7.62 Nato cartridge is awesome, but with that hideously short sight radius? Legitimately, I wonder how the AKs-74u would compared in terms of sight radius... anyways, that funky Ishapore No.5 is probably around 6.5-6.8lb unloaded if I had to wager a guess. VERY reasonable for a 7.62 Nato... the recoil must be pretty stout.

yes it is. Gibbs made them. Its nothing special but very functional.

I gave it to my wife and she uses it with those plastic german training rounds.

Every gun store and pawn shop in my area has a Luger or two they're listing at 1500-2000 USD. I haven't bothered to ask to fingerfuck any of them yet, but aren't decent non-matching Lugers going for about half that? There's no way these things are all matching all original with accessories... do you think I could offer them an actual reasonable price for what they have, or are they counting on selling it to some "muh luger" bubba for those exorbitant fees?

The rifle in the pic? I'm not him, but I'm quite certain it's a Type 99. Japanese, fires 7.7 Arisaka which is similar ballistically to .303 British. Essentially a modified Mauser bolt, cock-on-close instead of cock-on-open so it's remarkably smooth for a Mauser, and also has short-radius aperture sights instead of the more common short-radius tangent sights. Very rugged design, and also I think the first Military standard-issue rifle to be given a chrome-lined bore, however that had to be dropped later on in the war when things were getting desperate. Also they typically have AA sights. Not Alcoholics Anonymous; Anti-Aircraft. Made for propeller planes though so they'd be useless against modern planes.

Yes, in the 20s or 30s. The carbines always had them though.
