I'm buying my first AR this weekend.

Narrowed it down to these 3. Each is available for under $600 in my area. Thoughts? Only using it for home defense and varmint shooting.

>Smith and Wesson M&P Sport II

>Bushmaster QRC

>Ruger AR-556
>>
>>33471105
Whichever tickles your fancy. I'd go with Ruger just because I love Ruger, but it's all up to your personal preference. They'll all work just fine.
>>
>>33471105
Aero oem
>>
Either the Smith or the Ruger.
>>
>>33471105
Windham is good imo
>>
>>33471105
Which ever one you think has the neatest rollmark.
Also.
>railed gas block
>>
>>33471105
>>33471468
Ruger.

They're all cool but Ruger's rollmark is the coolest.
>>
>>33471489
Didn't notice that one at first. Yeah, avoid the railed gas block.
>>
>>33471105
All total trash.
>>
>>33471489
>>33471525
None of them have a railed gas block.
>>
>>33471105
Bought M&P sport II as first AR about a year ago.

Fed 500-1000 rounds through it, no problems.
>>
>>33471561
Ahh, I see it now. The front sight post on the top one just got cut off.
>>
>>33471577
>4140 barrel

You don't need thirty boolits to kill a deer

>>
>>33471523
Have to agree, Ruger has one of the best rollmarks. I love Walther but hate their rollmark, looks like it belongs on a candy wrapper.
>>
>>33471623
I like the Walther rollmark.
>>
Buy an AK instead
>>
>>33471633
He can't afford one lol.

AKs are for the rich, now.
>>
>>33471599
The kind of person who can only afford an AR with a 4140 barrel is the kind of person who can't afford enough ammo to shoot out a 4140 barrel.
>>
>>33471663
True.

I'm still going to make fun of that person, though.
>>
>>33471105
fuck bushmaster go with Windham. ruger looks like it has a nice thick grip. that's one less thing to immediately upgrade, unless you're a handlet.
>>
>>33471105
Look around for an Aero Precision AC-15. best gun for the money in your price range.
>>
>>33471105

Aero Precision AC15M is cheaper at brownells, even with a transfer fee, while having better barrel, finish, lower receiver & gas system
>>
>>33471681
okay
>>
>>33471686
Windham sucks just as bad as Bushmaster.

If you're going to be a cheap fuck at least get that Aero Precision thing.
>>

>Windham sucks just as bad as Bushmaster.
Lmao no.
>>
>>33471703
The fuck are you are talking about?
>>
>>33471711
Uh, yes. It's literally Bushmaster employees. Retards like to tout this because they're 15 and don't remember the 1990s enough to know Bushmaster was always shit. They were just the only alternative to Colt.
>>
I'm also thinking about getting an ar. I've seen my room mate build 3 of them with 80% lowers in 5.56 and .308.

Would it be hard to build one myself with complete upper and lowers? Would it be cheaper?
>>
>>33471105
Get a Savage MSR.
>>
>>33471820
It's stupid easy to do.
It depends on what you want, really. If you want nice stuff it gets more expensive, obviously. But you can spend the money where it counts.
>>
>>33471820
It's usually hard to beat the price of a bare-bones AR by building it yourself.
>>
>>33471820
>with complete uppers and lowers
That's the easiest way to do it. If by complete upper you mean with a bcg and charging handle, then you just slap the two together and you're done.

If you just buy a barreled upper assembly, then you need to buy a bcg and charging handle and put those in before slapping the upper and lower together. Then you're done. Not much to it.
>>
>>33471820
The problem is 99% of the instructions on the internet for assembling ARs is total bullshit.
>>
>>33471105

go with ruger to make bill shit his grave again. smith is the better gun imo tho
>>
>>33471951
Ruger is actually the best, but fuck Ruger.
>>
>>33471925

wait, people dont just watch larry Porterfield build one?
>>
>>33471999
And why the fuck would you? He's probably using the same shit 'guides' everyone's been using since the early 2000s.
>>
>>33471105
As someone who was in the exact same situation a week ago:
Ruger has the best barrel of the three
>>
>>33471997
>fuck Ruger
They're actually decent nowadays.
They're off the old AWB train since the father died and it passed to the sons
>>
>>33472190
I know what they are now. It's still fuck them forever. For what they did, and for what a roll pinned up abortion their piston AR was.
>>
>>33471820
Any one of the ARs in >>33471105 is gonna be better than an AR you can build at that price point.

Building is good if you know what you want and buy good parts, but that's gonna cost more than a lot of the really solid entry-level ARs on the market now.
>>
>>33472016
Tell me, how can someone telling you to insert pin A into slot B be so shit?
>>
>>33471105

M&P

T. M&P owner
>>
>>33471105
theyre all fine entry level rifles. i would go with the MP just because it has the most "correct" gasblock, although thats really inconsequential. but then again, it does have that giant ugly ass "M&P" laser etched into it. but really, theyre all fine.
>>
>>33472016
What's a good one then?
>>
>>33472484
i got an m&p and i like it. get what you want OP. which rollmark looks best to you? there's really no pressing difference.
>>
>>33472484
I've seen one, someone linked it here once. Unfortunately I don't have it saved. The standout was that the dude actually knew how to use a torque wrench.
>>
>>33472484
>>33472632
This is the best one that I know, however the torque wrench is where he fucks up a bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8sY5CQmlHI
>>
>>33471820
You're actually in a damn good situation to build one. Get yourself an 80% lower and look at BCM or PSA for a complete upper and a lower build kit. Hell, Polymer80 sells some complete buy-build-shoot kits for decent prices (though I'm skeptical about kit quality).
>>
I love my M&P15 Sport.

Do they still make the new ones with the melonite coated bores?

Anyway if you buy it, be careful about removing the front handguards for replacement. The spot where they join together on mine presents a sharp edge when you separate them, and when you take them off you're going to want to use gloves just in case yours are sharp too. You don't want to slice up your fingertips.

It's hard to describe but you'll know what I mean if your gun has the same slight finish issue.
>>
>>33471105

if you're short for cash i'd pick up 1:9 upper since all you're going to buy ammo-wise is probably going to be M193 / 55 grain .223
>>
>>33472821
No, they're untreated bores. Have been since about December 2012. Only the exterior is nitrocarburized.

I like my M&P sport. I want to get a sport II but happy with what I have.

I suggest you get it, along with a barrel conversion and a oil filter. That way you can impress the ATF when they check out your under $600 AR-15 with silencer.

Get a lower locally or make your own pretty cheap. I can get then for around $39 at local gun store, and not talking cheap polymer either. Decent mags are about $10 for 30rd.
>>
Anyone have any experience with Palmetto State Armory, any good ?
>>
Buy an Aero OEM, it's actually good and of modern AR design, not this carbine gassed 16" bullshit
>>
>>33475103
For Christ's sake do not buy PTAC
>>
>>33475138
Depends on which of their stuff you buy.
PTAC - skip. good if all you want is something that goes bang.
Anything with a nitride barrel - average quality at best
Premium/CHF barrel - good
Stainless steel - depends, can be good or average depending on the exact configuration
>>
>>33475151
>>33475154
Well I wouldnt, but saying that a cheap AR can be made under $400. You get what you pay for.
>>
>>33475170
It's not even an AR though, it's a piece of pot metal shit. The "blue" is painted on enamel that starts flaking off after the first time you shoot it
>>
>>33475180
You got anything to back that up?

Recent reviews say nothing about any of that.

Are there kits to make those puppies full auto?

Ruger, hands down.

Keep in mind the Ruger has a proprietary Delta ring that makes it kinda hard to switch out the handguards. It's okay if you don't mind the standard guard, but if you want to freeball forget about it.

I had the same decision a while back OP, and went with the Ruger. Here was my rationale:

1. Back up BUIS. Not a dealbreaker, but nice to have, and nice to be able to shoot the thing out of the box.

2. Twist-off delta ring. Really, really easy to get handguards off, and you can replace them with any AR handguards (Anon above is incorrect about this).

3. Milled FSB. Not a huge thing, but it does look nice.

4. SAW-type grip. The A2 grip is fine, but this one is just a little better.

All in all, the entry level ARs are about the same. It's just little shit between them that makes people want one over the other. The Ruger doesn't have a chrome-lined bore, which for some people was a dealbreaker, but for me was right out of the book of Who Cares.

You'll fbe happy with whatever you get, really.

It's literally a threaded nut. You rotate it left.
Unlike a Delta Ring it can be done with just your hands.

M&P Sport II
I have it and have to say its the ideal AR
>>

lol The Sport II's barrel is actually kind of shitty

If you're not shooting 500 rounds a week then it's fine. It is ideal for a new shooter.
>>
>>33476480
"Fine as long as you don't shoot it much" != ideal
Don't get me wrong it's a solid AR for the price but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a shitty barrel

>>33476480
By this logic the RAS47 is the "ideal" AK
>>
>>33476396
This, the sport 2 is great rifle.
>>33476402
What's shitty about it? It performs just fine for a budget rifle, and barrel changes are really simple with an AR.
>>33476970
Not even a close comparison.
>>
>>33475138
There was a thread just the other day where PSA shipped a guy a carbine buffer and spring to go along with his rifle extension. Needless to say, it didn't function right.
>>
>>33476979
> what's shitty about it?
Soft steel, untreated bore, 1:9 twist
>>
>>33477176
The 1:9 isn't really an issue if you're shooting lighter weight ammo. The other two you won't even notice with normal range use, and when you shoot it out you can change to something nicer.
>>
>>33474889
You can't buy a decent AK for less than 700-750, today.
>>
>>33477266
1:9 is an issue if you use your AR for home defense because you should be using 70gr+ bullets.
>>
>>33477328
Not really because both will fuck up your day if your shot placement is right.
>>
>>33477266
Again, while the M&P Sport II is a solid entry-level AR, don't act like those aren't issues.

It's literally shit like that that lets companies get away with that kind of bullshit corner-cutting, hence the RAS47 comparison.

The Ruger barrel doesn't have those issues and it retails for cheaper than the Smith.
>>
>>33475138
I've had 4 of my credit cards stolen from there.
Before that, I've read reports from other customers about it. But I thought that they just got it stolen from somewhere else and unjustly blaming PSA, Boy was I wrong.
>>
>>33477388
They really aren't issues though, you're just making it that way.
>much ras corner cutting
The comparison isn't even close, S&W is offering this as a cheaper alternative to their other rifles, which are all pretty good, Century is just trash period. The Ruger also has proprietary components whereas the Sport 2 doesn't.
