Nigger no. The ASVAB score is where you stand in relation to everyone else who took the test within the last 5 years.

50 is the mean and median, therefore it is the average. The best possible score is a 99, the worst is a 1, and it is totally unrelated to how many answers you got right or wrong.

The AFQT and your line scores are only a part of the ASVAB, and are graded "normally".
>>

building things outside the drafting room you get screwed by that, make revisions, wait for revision to be approved, while doing so deal with the engineer throwing a fit because his design was perfect beyond the fact that there is no way to physically build it, repeat.

the asvab is based of a percentile as you described but i dont think the score pool has been updated in a while.

After seeing the contents of the test you cant seriously think that any one with with a score below 80 can function regularly in society?

>be me at meps
>get 90 on asvab and think i did bad since i got 98 on the practice
>atleast i got enough for any of the pog career fields i wanted
>overhear a guy say that he got a 40 and their recruiter told them that was a good score
theres a reason why the military has a reputation for recruiting the dumbest in america.

Yes, I do think that people who score below an 80 can function in society.
>had 99 asvab, 143 GT, 141 GS line scores
>had buddy enlist 3 years ago: 63 ASVAB, 101 GT/132 GS line scores
I fully expect my ASVAB percentile was inflated because I enlisted mid-surge and got all the trailer trash, fresh immigrants, and inner-city thugs' scores to compete against while he enlisted well after the drawdown when only people legitimately wanting to join took it.

And it automatically updates continuously, every time someone's score is entered into the system it is applied against everyone else's scores.
>>
>>33470134
>>33470252
Oh, also. I don't give half a fuck about the ASVAB percentile because it's not a good reflection on your intelligence. If you're talking sub-80 line scores, yes they need to be in a helmet 24/7.

>>
>My ASVAB means I'm smart!
Armed Services VOCATIONAL Aptitude Battery test.

Meaning that the test is judging your knowledge of subjects related to the military. Now in that case, someone with a AFQT score of 50 means he did better than 50% of the examinee's. Your AFQT has NO affect on your MOS placement, your composite score does. That said, someone who rocks out Arithmetic Reasoning, but can't even into Mechanical Comprehension, is not suited to be a Avionics Tech.

Physics is basically applied math and logic. My brother and I always had trouble with algebra and other abstract math in school, but we've both built all kinds of stuff after conceptualizing it and then figuring out the needed math as we've gone. Don't blame yourself; it's mostly the way math is taught in school. A lot of people are the same way.

Marine recruiter was talking about how the ASVAB was good shit and blah blah drink the kool-aid blah blah. Said that any person who talks to him about joining and scores above a 96 gets a steak dinner. So I play along, do some PT, scores come in and I get a 98. Eat at Outback one night. He shows up, late, hustles me in and shouts cringe worthy shit to the waitresses, and whole restaurant.
>hero, future marine, high score on ASVAB, oo rah, etc
We order the meal or rather he orders mine and doesn't get anything. Shoves the papers all over the table and talks about signing up. Steak comes and he tries to move it to the other end of the table so he can continue talking. Eat my stake and probably half of a piece of 8x11 because he's literally shoving it in my face. Say thanks and I'll swing by the office in the morning to sign it. Block his number and delete him and all the other vultures off of FB. Jokes on me though, I'm going officer in a year.

97 which was the highest any of the recruiters at my station had ever seen. I got offered a fast track to WO, but I was still 17 and needed my parents' permission to enlist and they were ex-hippies who hated the military and wouldn't sign off, and I ended up going to college and getting into other shit instead.

Looking back 13 years later I wish I'd signed the papers when I'd turned 18, I think I would've been happier and more successful in the military environment and would probably be browsing /k/ as a commissioned officer by now.

Nah, my knees (and hips, and ankles, and lower back) started going to shit and I decided that a lazy life in a climate controlled civilian office sounded pretty awesome, so I cashed in the GI bill and went to school currently in year 3 of fucking college sluts and halfassing through a business IT degree and still making Dean's List. Everyone I know who stayed in says peacetime infantry sucks shit.

>>33471631
Well on day 1 of 36th, they pulled a bunch of us aside and were like "WANT TO DO A DOG AND PONY SHOW IN DC?! JOIN OLD GUARD!" All those tomb of the unknown guards are infantry, same with the honor guards and shit at events. It sounded kinda neat, and I imagine there's some neat jobs there, but fuck that noise. I thought I was going to be deploying like normal, but when the initial posting list went around I was the only person in the platoon not going to washington or with the old guard guys.

Ended up some extra training as a VIP escort. Some driving lessons, familiarization on basically every fucking weapon platform imaginable and some more room clearing shit on top of the normal infantry stuff. Riding shotgun for generals and VIPs in blackhawks in theater as they did general things. Sometimes it was borderline gopher shit, but so many fringe benefits, though. Sometimes nobody important needed a battle buddy, so you'd rotate in and give someone a day off of patrol.

In garrison, I got pulled aside because the Brigade Combat Team transition was going on, and there was a bunch of paperwork and organizational shuffling going on, and someone up high said "we need a smart guy on this", and I got volunteered. So for a couple months I was an E-4 running around with a blank check and a piece of paper from a full bird that said I could do whatever it fucking took to get that shit done.

You're the guy they get when they need someone who can think, but is still qualified to kick down doors and be a badass.

Scoring high on AVSAB doesnt mean you're a genius it means you have solid problem solving skills and some knowledge of a few fields key to the military like mechanical engineering and math. It's mostly a "What do you already know, what have you learned without training that is relevent" type aptitude test to see how easy it will be to turn you into some sort of soldier. My dad was a tech/shop teacher and I knew how to rebuild an engine by the time I was 12, fired a gun when I was like 5. Most of the stuff on that test was just stuff I learned by being near my dad and paying vague attention in school.

I >>33474191 scored well, simply because I have lots of practical knowledge, and that's what the test is about.

When I took the ASVAB, I scored an: "OMIGOSH ZED WHAT A FABULOUS SCOURE HAHAHA, I THINK MAYBE YOU SHOULD BE AN OFFICER HAHAHA NO SERIOUSLY LETS GO OVER TO MY DESK AND LOOK AT SOME PAPERWORK HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT OUR PILOT PROGRAM IT'S REALLY GREAT OF COURSE THERES NO GUARANTEES HAHAHA BUT THERE ARE REALLY SOME FABULOUS OPPORTUNITIES..."

Some minutes later, I put both hands up, palms out, backed slowly out of the door, then turned an ran like the demons of Satan were chasing me. Best decision of my entire life.
>>
95, then I dropped out of boot.

Fuck it.
>>
There's no /meg/ up so I figure I'd ask it here with enlisted men and vets posting.
Joining AF, recruiter said that Maintenance & Electronics jobs were in demand. Want to do Electronics and have been looking at Avionics positions. I did well enough on the ASVAB with a score of 89. If I say that's what I want to do, is there the high chance I'll be doing that, or is what I say a suggestion?
>>
95

Had recruiters ringing my phone off the hook for weeks. I went to college instead.

i was out of town when the recruiter came to my parents house, and my dad told him to fuck off i wasn't interested. kinda pissed me off. could have gone to school for something and had a decent career when i got out.

98.

Then my MEPS roommate told the doctor I was snoring that night, and now I'm on month 18 of applying for a medical waiver for fucking sleep apnea.

When asked about my snoring, he said "I dunno, I guess it wasn't that bad". Fucking faggot.

is it hard...?

I got a 95. Gonna head down to meps next thursday to pick my job. Gonna go with infantry because fuck logic. Hopefully i can get airborne and a bonus with a good score.

>look at how tough I am guys
>>
>>33468691
that looks absolutely terrible
>>
>>33467784
Everyone on /k/ got at least a 99 on their ASVAB
>>
>>33479885
They're gonna tell you there are no airborne contracts available, so tell them you won't sign until there is and magically one will appear after a quick phone call
>>
>>33479885
You'll get nothing for scoring high, and no one will care what your ASVAB is outside of MEPS.

The guy who talks about his ASVAB after joining is like that guy who can't stop talking about his high school football days when in his 30's.
>>
>>33467784
I got a 78 too, picked 0861
>>
>>33480009
I know it won't matter outside of meps, the only thing it's good for is to negotiate a contract because it puts you in a better position than coming in with a 40 or something. Especially when you need at least 105 in GT score for airborne. It's like taking the SAT, once you're in college that shit is irrelevant but it's a factor to getting you in.

>>33479989
Thanks. I don't know how hard i should try to push for it. But i might as well since i would want to be in an airborne unit instead of be stuck with the slobs who just want to scrape by.
>>
I got a 69. I'm stupid I know
>>
>>33480103
As long as you qualify for whatever you want to do that's all that matters.

>all these 80 + scores ITT

I'll be the honest one, I scored a 39 the first time I took the test
>>
>>33480103
My serious reply will be to not be discouraged and engage yourself.
My less than serious reply is that you'll feel a whole lot different about your intelligence once you get in around people.

Shit could get smaller though, for use while operating within BlueTooth range

95. Still have my results, somewhere.
>>
>>33467784
It doesn't measure aptitude. Literally the practice tests are the same as the actual test.
>>
I am honestly not surprised by all the high scores here. Not saying this is the smartest group of people on the internet but anyone who's taken the ASVAB can tell you how stupid the shit on it is.

Like you would have to be someone who failed freshman physics, math, english and also needed remedial courses on reading to get anything below an 80 or at least upper 70s.

The people I met who made shit scores on the ASVAB were legitimately the stupidest people I've ever met. Like "fuck i just gouged the floor dragging this shit instead of using the dolly in the next room, if i act like nothing happened no one will notice' stupid. Like "last time i forgot to clean my rifle i got yelled at so i will spend literally two hours cleaning it after firing one magazine" stupid. Like "they said tighten this down so i ran this ratchet strap until i needed to get a cheater bar and pulled it until i damaged the equipment underneath it and also snapped the lever off the strap" stupid.

MOST people you meet in every day life would score at least a 70. If it dosen't make sense that 90% of people are smarter than at least 70% of the people who take the ASVAB then you never served lol
>>
>>33469298
Yeah I can't remember a specific ASVAB score but I know my GT was 116 and that meant I had a good amount of choices.

It's actually damn comfy to use despite looks, it feels quite a bit better than a typical laptop keyboard IMO. I'm really quite picky about keyboards.
Pic related is it and a full size keyboard.
>>33480295
Now THAT looks terrible to use, tiny little keys drive me absolutely nuts.
