>But as American involvement in Vietnam was winding down, the Army canceled the Cheyenne program on 9 August 1972. By this time, the AH-1 Cobra was widely deployed by the Army during the Vietnam War. Controversy with the United States Air Force over the Cheyenne's role in combat[2] as well as the political climate regarding military acquisition programs had caused the Army to amend the service's attack helicopter requirements in favor of a twin-engine conventional helicopter, viewed as less technical and more survivable.[3] The Army announced a new program for an Advanced Attack Helicopter (AAH) on 17 August 1972,[4] which led to the development of the AH-64 Apache.

It really is amazing how versatile the UH-60 is. It can fly troops, supplies, perform Medevac, carry a jeep or a howitzer (with its crew), and it can carry the same weapons as the Apache and Cobra. It's been in service for 30 years and it's still going strong, I imagine after the Army finally replaces it the USMC will get them.

My dad was with the unit that flew VIPs in DC, he's flown a lot of high ranking officers, and helped fly George H W Bush (when he was Vice President).

But, to be fair, I don't think they count as helicopters.
I was actually talking with my dad about if they were going to start making attack Osprey at first. It seems likely since apparently the things meant to be its escorts (other helicopters) can't keep up, but according to him they're just making speed improvements to the attack helicopters, but he's not sure how they'll fix the range issue.
For maximum cliche: yes, my dad works at Boeing. (he works on the C-17s though.)

>>33470311
it's completely automatic, but can be done manually as well.
There are electric motors on each blade where the cuff meets the spar, and they drive a hinge which angles the blade. in order to get the rotor head a the correct angle for folding (for attaching heavy weather restraints) there's a hydraulic motor attached to the MGB. The electricians can also use a set which allows them to manually actuate the motors in case there's an electrical/wiring issue.
its also a huge pain in the ass. I think the navy would be better off without them to be honest. it's just a fancy way of folding.

I'm not sure if it's this exact Marine One or its predecessor, but I've had my house buzzed by it a few times over the last couple of years. I live on a hill that's right under the flightpath the President's helo flight takes when he's in LA, and I can always tell when they're flying over because of how obscenely loud the Osprey escorts are. (My place is at 850' ASL and they fly at maybe 1200, so they're damn close.)
I get a ton of civilian traffic too, especially police and fire stuff (which in LA includes tons of Hueys and Blackhawks) but military is rare. I spotted a couple of Cobras circling over Burbank for some reason a while back, and I've seen a decent number of Chinooks over the years, but that's about it.
