Japanese tanks aren't even that bad if you take into account their tonnages.

Soviet tankists used to regard being issued a lend-lease Sherman as a death sentence, so much so that commisars would use it as a punishment.

As the Russians used to say the death penalty was carried out by "Amerikanskaya stal or Russkaya pulya", American steel or Russian bullets.

Have you ever researched "crew killed per knocked out/penetrated tank"? I know this is a bait-tread and all, but its quite interesting to see how the Sherman scores compared to T-34's, Panzer IV's and so on.
Let this tread live long enough and someone will probably post those numbers.

More T-34s were built than Sherman, but I have to wonder how that stacks up when limited to just WW2. Sherman production ended with the war, while T-34 production continued to like 1958.

I wonder if, given their relative loss rates, if past some point in like 1943, were there more working Sherman tanks at any given time than T-34s up until the end of the war?

It depends on what you want from a tank. DO you want something as cheap as humanly possible and with decent gun/armor T-34 is your freiend

You want a cheap, sturdy and not in any way underperforming tank that you have to ship over an ocean? Sherman!

Want something with front armor thicker than the great wall of china and you really have to shoot things from two miles away? Tiger II

The Russians had to crank them out faster and in greater numbers because they were losing tanks at a very high rate thanks to a combination of poor quality control and poor training. Generally a T-34 was not expected to survive anywhere near as long as a Sherman in the field.
