I have a Norinco SKS, looks pretty much exactly like the pic but is missing the bayonet. I'm in the process of building a 5.56 AR-15, but I'd like to have a functioning 7.62 rifle as well.

What kinds of upgrades am I able to do to this rifle? All I can think of is putting on a good scope and modifying it to take larger magazines. Can the wooden SKS models take new stocks, grips, handguards, triggers, etc.?

And does anybody have any information on these Norinco rifles in general? Are they reliable? Do they hold up well even after thousands of rounds are put through them? I want to know if this thing is worth maintaining.

On the off-chance that I'm wrong and pic related doesn't apply...

Buy the correct bayo for it. If you can find one for cheap install a Chinese 20-round fixed magazine. If the malnourished-peasant LoP is too short for you buy a 1" buttpad with a trapdoor port so you can have the increased stock length without sacrificing the cleaning kit. Buy as many surplus (arsenal stamped) strippers as you can and invest in a ChiCom battle bra.
That's literally it. Those are the only upgrades for an SKS that are legitimately upgrades. The aftermarket stocks are universally shit that completely fuck up the ergos, and the rails are made of the same shitty plastic. Duckbills are bulky and unreliable. There's pretty much no solid way to mount a scope without drilling the receiver.
Don't waste a bunch of money turning your SKS into a shittier version of an AK that doesn't do anything as well as an AK does. You'll waste a bunch of money and time. Either love the SKS for what it is or sell it and buy an AK. You won't be happy with the results of Bubba-ing your gun.

>>
>>33446639
there is very little mechanical stress on AR lowers, the only bits that are, are the buffer tube uhh neck(?) and hammer pin hole. and those only need to be worried about with polymer lowers. and there was a run of Anderson mfg or Stag lowers a while back that had the incorrect grip screw angle, but it want that big a deal iirc.
do an image search of finished 80% lowers and you can see how shitty some are and they still function, you can pretty much buy any lower you want with no worries

Pro tips:
1. Replace the bayonet.

2. Leave it the fuck alone.
>>
>>33446730
If the lug is there (assuming Bubba didn't dremel it off) the Bayo should come with everything you need.
It's literally the bayo (which is a couple parts and a spring) and the retention mechanism which is a screw and nut.
Also, you didn't mention whether or not it had a cleaning kit and rod. Sometimes they don't come with them. If not acquire them because it let's you do everything short of armorer-level shit to your gun in the field.
Shit's a marvel of Slav ingenuity, no shit:

>guns can't have functional attachments or upgraded components
Key word being "functional"
And my post outlined how almost none of the """upgrades""" available for SKS rifles legitimately improve function, as well as outlined the stuff you can do to improve function.
>>
>>33446829
That's why I asked the goddamn question. If adding or changing out parts doesn't improve it's function or reliability, then I won't modify it.
>>
>>33446829
Only real functional attachments for some people I can think of are stock extensions and maybe better sights, if there's a solid option. I've also been toying around with the idea of copying the bayo of actual knifemaking steel.

Which is why I'm giving you non-sarcastic advice you ungrateful sperg.
Bubba'd SKSs are absolutely a thing. This has largely gone away over the years as they got rarer and more expensive but back in the $80-$150 days "custom" (read: ruined) SKSs were everywhere because retards had this idea of turning it into "a poor man's AK." They would show up on gunbroker with a 300% markup over a superior unfucked milsurp rifle in factory condition.

So yeah when a thread comes up on /k/ specifically about modifying/customizing an SKS, there's a 75% chance it's someone who's been around a while trolling, and 25% chance it's a legitimate newfag who doesn't know any better.
Quit being fucking defensive and be thankful the thread doesn't consist solely of oldfags and memelords REEEEEEEEing.

Wheres a good place to buy type 56 stocks? Mine came with a heavily scarred one, which I'll keep tucked away safe, but I am looking for a less worn one to shoot with.
>>
>>33446996
Just clean the gun. A spring-loaded firing pin "solves" a non-issue if you are maintaining your gun properly.
You don't even have to disassemble the bolt. Just spray CLP in there and move the pin around to make sure it moves when it has to.
If an SKS is slamfiring it's been subjected to some serious neglect.

the absolute and only permanant modification acceptable that isn't a trigger job, repair, or re-finish, is a re-crowning and threaded* barrel.
here are your options
>get correct bayonet
>get leather clip pouch for stock
>get com-bloc sling
>get one of those zero-modification-required scout scope mounts
>get mini rds
bonus round
>paint mini rds with hammered gray spraypaint.
>get trigger job

That sucks.
Short answer? You can either pay a gunsmith to fix that (by adding material via weld then grinding it to shape and blueing) or get a new lug from a parts sight (which might be hard to find, I dunno, never looked), punch out the pins on the sight block and what's left of the lug, press them off, then press and pin the new lug and FSB back into the barrel or pay a gunsmith to.

In short: fucking expensive/giant pain in the ass even if you have the tools and knowledge to do it yourself
So yeah realistically accept that the bayo is gone and your gun is a eunuch

My condolences.

ChiCom milsurp SKSs (Type 56s) are fucking excellent guns. On par with Russian SKSs.
However Norinco made-for-export commercial guns are a far more mixed bag. Some are totally fine, some aren't worth the wood and steel they're made out of.

The Norincos are the reason Chinese SKSs have a lesser reputation than some other ComBloc countries despite China being one of the only nations who actually produced and equipped their armed forces with SKSs for serious business on a mass scale.

No military ever fielded SKSs nigger-rigged to work with detachable AK mags.

it has nothing to do with whether or not it is a spike or blade. It has to do with whether or not it is the oroginal from the factory configuration.

Breh have you TRIED to adjust that fucking front sight? It's a bitch.
>>
>>33450851

Folded or not will have have some impact, but probably less than whether the bayonet has been removed or not.

Spike vs. blade wouldn't matter because the rifle would have been sighted at the factory with one or the other. Swapping a blade to spike or vice versa might have some effect, but probably on the same order as deployed vs. folded. Less than having a bayonet vs. not having a bayonet.

>I'm sure if the difference is there at all it's minimal and you can fix it in 5 minutes with a sight tool if you know what you're doing at all.

I agree, the debate is rather pointless.

No, it isn't?

7.62x39 AKs and SKSs are possibly the easiest-to-sight-in firearms in the world.
Shit there's literally a sight-post adjustment tool in the buttstock and the round crosses the same point of aim at 25M and 200M.
Windage is a little more tricky but allegedly the bayonet only affects point of aim vertically.
Also if you didn't spend $10 on a C-clamp-style sight tool as one of your first purchases when you bought the rifle you're a dummy.

Does it shoot ok? If yes then fuck yeah do what you can to unfuck it.
A replacement bayonet, cleaning kit, and rod will run you <$50. Unless the stock is really bad there are things you can do to refinish it. Woodworking is fun.
If not you can pick up a replacement stock on ebay. Shit there's a Russian Surplus stock on there now for like $40.
As for the scope mount, is it actually drilled INTO the receiver or is it an aftermarket dust cover scope mount? If the former, not much you can do. If the latter, find a replacement dust cover.
SKSs are stupid expensive in [2012+5] America. New Yugos sell for around $450, beat-to-fuck Chinese guns sell for $350-$400. Russians are literally more expensive than decent AKs.

Again, this is all dependent on whether or not the gun shoots well or not. If it's a piece of shit don't bother.

>Why shouldn't an SKS be my first gun?
Because slamfires
>>
>>33451270
The piece is both a scope mount and a dust cover. It's one solid piece of cast iron and it does appeared to be drilled onto the receiver, yes. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet as I'm in the process of scrubbing all the grease out of the action.

There's also a stock extension screwed onto the back and i can't quite figure out how to get it off.

unless your gun is literally fresh out of the cosmoline, or you store it in a barrel of salt water, slamfires should never be an issue.

I guess I'm confused by that.
Dust cover scope mounts have no reason to be drilled into the receiver. It should just be a matter of replacing the dusty cover, which is the top-left part pictured here.

Solvent: Hoppe's No 9 is popular.
Oil: pretty much whatever. 3in1, BreakFree, Mobil1 synthetic. You need oil for rust prevention and lubrication.
Grease: I actually prefer grease for lube. Lithium grease is fine.
A toothbrush
Boresnakes are nice. Also the Cleaning kit that comes with the gun is awesome but is more of an "in the field" type deal and it's nice to just have a general cleaning kit for all your guns.
>>
>>33451783
Ed's red and some old shirts or other rags. The sks cleaning kit is GOAT tier for a military cleaning kit.

Get a bore snake, I'm lazy so instead of .308 I use a .338 bore snake. It's a little snugger and I figure I'm avoiding an entire pass through with it. The first thing you're going to want to do is boil your entire bolt, disassemble it first. Then apply oil, not grease to the firing pin channel, just a couple of drops and put it back together. Get some pipe cleaners for cleaning aftet that, I've always had good success. The reason the sks slam fires is due to its free floating firing pin. The only way to avoid this is to either ensure that your bolt channel is always clear or to get a return spring kit. I've always just kept mine clean and I haven't had a slam fire since I was 18 and unaware of this issue.
>>
>>33451485

Actually just stripped the mount off, looks like it wasn't drilled on, the screws were just used for extra torque to keep it mounted. But I will need to buy a new dust cover.

How stiff should the gas piston be? I took apart an SKS I'm thinking about buying, and the piston took some work to move back and forth.

Also, general cleaning tips?
>>
>>33447922
I would really not recommend fucking around with the stock magazine at all on the SKS. The 20/30 round mags are notoriously unreliable. The SKS was designed to fire from an internal 10 round magazine only. If you want more than 10 rounds just buy an AK, you'll save yourself a lot of money and grief.
>>
>>33452927
That's more mag related in my experience. 20 round tapcos run just fine in mine, however I have a 30 round promag that still can't go through a mag without a fuck up.

If I can, I'd like to rescue the thread a little. This is my SKS. It was bubba'd like this when I got it, but it's still an excellent gun. The scope is broken and I've never used it, I've never touched the bipod either, and I've confirmed that the scope rail comes off (because I took it off).

Can my SKS be restored? Should it be restored? It's been modified to use those tapco banana mags. It's still my first ever serious rifle, and my favorite of those I've shot (because, of course, it's what I learned on), and I guess I want to do right by it since it's never let me down.

Would an AK really be a noticeable improvement, by the way? I hear American AKs tend to be a mishmash of parts because they've been fixed for semi-auto.
>>
>>33461084

>Can my SKS be restored?

You'd need to replace basically everything, but you could do it. You'd need to:

>buy and mount a new bayonet
>buy a new stock/handguard (and all the hardware/metal)
>buy a new fixed magazine
>remove that scope rail
>buy a new receiver cover (if that one isn't the stock one)

Whether or not you should do it is entirely up to you. If you got that thing for cheap and just want to shoot shit with it, that's fine. Restoring it to the original configuration could be costly since you're missing basically everything, and even then you wouldn't have a gun with all matching #'s.

SKS is a cheap, common gun.You can do with it whatever you'd like, and it shouldn't matter to anyone. I'd just go with what is most practical
>>
>>33461135

>SKS is a cheap, common gun

That's what people said about Mosins, and here we are with $250 being the norm for them now. I can bet my ass shit like the Mosin and SKS will be stupidly expensive within a decade from now.

You can mount your barrel/receiver/etc in the stock mount. Other than that, I don't think that stock will accept a cleaning rod or kit.
