No exclusively for long marches, but they are emptied first, so the risk of them containing any fuel diminishes quite fast after travelling any meaningful distance. As a matter of fact, they also provided fine enough protection when filled with sand.

The truth is that its diesel, anything that has set it on fire has already killed everyone in the compartment.

No BS. Sand provides excellent protection against small arms. The rear fuel doors are wide enough to render the BMP impervious to 7.62x51 ball ammunition with sand alone if we disregard the steel from the fuel doors.

Now RPG's or 50 cal would shew it up but, fire or no fire in the fuel the crew will still die since that is what happens to legacy IFV when shot in the ass with heavy enough firepower. Even with sand.
